What's new? Plans for new community centres move forward East end Community Centre to be designed this year
What's New?
A community centre is coming to the east end. Located on Highway 15 at Gore Road, the facility will be approximately 20,000 sq. ft. and include a full-sized gymnasium and numerous meeting and programmable spaces. The design for the new community centre will commence in 2016. Rideau Heights Community Centre and Shannon Park renewal take shape Work is underway to create a Rideau Heights community hub with improved recreational and community gathering spaces, a new library and community centre. The project includes a new skate park and multi-sports courts, new playground equipment, community gardens, seniors/youth space and a full-sized gymnasium. This new social and recreational hub for the community is being planned, designed and constructed through a partnership between the City, Kingston Frontenac Public Library and the Limestone District School Board. The development of the community centre and the renewal of Shannon Park began in May 2015 with the removal of the housing complex at 80 Daly St. and the Wally Elmer Youth Centre.

Y2K – Youth Friendly Kingston
Youth Programs
Youth, young adults and adults are working together to make Kingston a more youth-friendly city. This movement is recognized as Y2K: Youth 2 Kingston. In April 2016, the City of Kingston was recognized as a Youth-Friendly Community.
Youth Programs
“Young people contribute greatly to the vibrancy of life in Kingston. This (Youth-Friendly Community) designation recognizes that our community offers our young people great facilities, services and opportunities and honours their contribution to our community,” said Mayor Bryan Paterson. Join Y2K, a group of youth and adults that plan activities, make presentations, do recruitment and give advice to decision-makers on youth issues. Y2K activities are fun, rewarding and offer great leadership opportunities. Make friends and allies who are equally dedicated to making Kingston a more youth-friendly place. I Love Water Polo
Swim Sports
'I Love Water Polo' (ILWP) is an introductory water polo program for young people ages 6-14. In a learn-to-play environment, similar to swimming lessons, participants discover the game of water polo and the basic skills involved in aquatic sports. The ILWP program helps to enhance the participants’ swimming, balance and coordination skills. No prior water polo experience is required.
Red Cross Swim Sports’ modules offer an opportunity to try and learn the fundamental skills of a variety of sports. The focus is on having fun with friends and peers and trying new activities. Some of the sports played include: diving, lifesaving sport, triathlon swim, underwater hockey and water polo.
Pre-requisite: Participants must be comfortable in deep water.

What to know about swimming lessons What to Expect from Lessons
Swim Lessons
The Red Cross Swim Program allows students to progress comfortably in programs tailored to their age group. For this reason, the recreation and leisure department does not allow age overrides for any swim program. Talk about lessons with your child. Have realistic expectations, so your child does not feel pressured to ‘pass’ a level or get a badge; and focus on completing the skills at a progressive pace.
What Level Should I Be In? There are a few options to assist you in finding the right level: • Onsite registration – show staff your child’s previous report card with the swim instructor’s recommendation. • Let us assess your child’s swimming level during any Family Swim or Leisure Swim. • Review the swim-level descriptions on page 49, 54 & 58. • Call us at 613-546-4291 ext. 1719/1722.

Low-Ratio Red Cross Swim Lessons These are programs with a maximum of three participants. Each participant receives more individual attention and more of an opportunity to practice their skills.
Progress Cards Participants will receive a progress card on the last day of lessons.
48
We do not issue mid-term report cards. Please do not submit previous report cards to the instructors. They are required to complete all items on the progress card to move to the next level. If your child is away on the last day of classes, you can pick up your progress card at the front desk.
Cancellations & Changes to Programs All programs and services are subject to change without notice. While every effort is made to ensure information is accurate at time of print, we reserve the right to alter, change and/or cancel programs and services as required.
Watching Swimming Classes Parents and guardians are encouraged to stay and watch their child’s swimming lessons from the lobby area or pool deck. Please note that outdoor footwear, beverages, food and cell phones are not allowed on the pool deck.
Cell Phone & Electronics Policy The use of electronic recording devices capable of rendering a photograph are prohibited on the pool deck.
Artillery Park Aquatic Centre Access Card Get your access card from the front desk to gain entry the change rooms.
Help Prevent Pool Foulings Please refrain from feeding children or eating large meals before swimming. All swimmers are encouraged to visit the washroom before entering the pool. Water diapers are required for children who are not toilet trained. Refrain from entering the
Recreation and Leisure Services
pool if your child feels ill. Pool foulings result in pool shutdowns of 2-13 hours.
Private Lessons Private lessons are a great way to develop specific swimming skills through personalized coaching. If your child has accomplished all but a few skills in a level, a private lesson might be right for you. Private lessons are available for the following programs: Private; Semi-private (two students); Pro-Abilities and Adult Lessons. For Semi-private Lessons participants should be at the same skill level or within one lesson level. Please call 613-546-4291 ext. 1719/1722 to arrange for semiprivate lessons.
Pro-Abilities – Adapted Swim Lessons One-on-one instruction tailored to meet the needs of individuals with special needs in a fun learning environment. For available times see private lesson time slots on page 59. See page 5 for registration information.
Wait Lists Work Have you ever tried to register for a program that had no spaces available? Adding your name to a wait list allows us to create new programs when possible and to notify you when spaces become available.
Questions or Concerns Your feedback is important to us. A head instructor is available during lessons to answer any questions you may have. If you have a concern, speak with a head instructor right away so we can address it and ensure your child has a successful and positive experience.
