St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School Open House: Today, January 29th at 1:30-4:00p.m. “What I love the most about St. Francis School is the community; that I have been able to group myself and my children with likeminded families and teachers who truly love God and aspire to be devoted followers of Jesus. Having the parish and the school as one facility is a blessing! Mrs. Julie Pritzel and Father James Conlon are amazing leaders who set high standards for the school and the church community. They both lead by example and are a true inspiration to families and the children. The pairing up of activities with the school and the parish is an art that my children benefit from. All three of my children feel loved, respected and eager to grow their faith every day at St. Francis School. They feel comfortable to be able to say “God Bless You”, or “I will pray for you” to their peers without judgment. As Catholics, it is very important to us to be able to show our faith throughout our day, and at St. Francis, that is embraced. In fact, my oldest daughter says that her favorite part of the week is Adoration. She said that since she began school at SFA this past fall, she feels a closer personal relationship to God. Academically, it is by far the best education for Pre-K to 8 that we have experienced. Although we have been active parishioners since 2006, this is the first year the children have attended SFA School. Being in Ann Arbor, I was sure that the academics at SFA would be about the same as the public schools. I was wrong! All 3 of my children feel that the academics are more challenging and exciting. They look forward to going to school every day and can’t wait to share “what happened” at school with us when we pick them up. The teachers are so welcoming and truly have a desire to advance our children spiritually and academically. But, it does not stop there…when walking the halls or going to the front office, you still feel the care and love for all children. The faculty team as St. Francis is amazing and full of passion to grow the children into wonderful little people of God and to prepare them for higher education. The Kaji Family is truly blessed to call SFA Catholic School and Parish our home!”

ite of Christian Initiation of Adults

The initiation of adults is the responsibility of ALL the baptized! This weekend, we celebrate another step in the RCIA process with our Catechumens (those who hope to be baptized at the Easter Vigil): anointing

with the Oil of Catechumens. Oil is used in modern times for heating, light, cooking, health, healing, just to name a few. In biblical times it was regarded as a sign of abundance and God’s favor to have oil. The anointing catechumens receive, symbolizes their need for God’s help and strength, so that undeterred by the bonds of the past and overcoming the opposition of the devil, they will forthrightly take the step of professing their faith and will hold fast to it unfalteringly throughout their entire lives!

CONSISTENT LIFE ETHIC Week 3 of 6: For Teens (and pretens)

January 29, 2017

OUR PARISH COMMUNITY SUPPORTS FAMILIES WITH ADOLESCENTS

In addition to the basic needs of children we discussed last week, adolescents face special We offer Pre-Teens and Teens challenges requiring a pro-life approach: Opportunities for Education, • Peer pressure Socialization, and a Chance • Bullying, including cyber bullying to Grow in their Faith: • Dating, including relationship violence • Experimenting with alcohol, tobacco, or drugs • St. Francis School offers a high• Poverty (18% of American adolescents live in poverty, rural adolescents most likely to be quality middle school poor) • Our Middle School Youth Group • Gang involvement offers fun events and a chance to • The school-to-prison pipeline and sentencing teens as adults in the criminal justice make new friends system • Our High School Youth Group • Running away from a terrible home situation and being exploited by adults or even helps teens make sense of their trafficked lives and offers fun social events

• There's a reason we may sometimes find teen behavior inexplicable. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, research has changed longTeens were the most held assumptions about how the brain matures. We now know stressed out age group that, in key ways, the teen brain doesn't look like an adult brain • in the U.S. in APA’s until the early 20s. Changes taking place beneath the surface help 2013 Stress in America explain why, for many young people, this can be a hazardous age: survey • • • • •

Our Youth Band & Choir allows adolescents to share their musical talents The parish offers a wide variety of opportunities throughout the year for teens to engage in service projects.

Death by injury for those age 15-19 are about 6 times higher than for those age 10-14 Crime rates are highest among young males Rates of alcohol abuse are high relative to other ages, and alcohol (and other drugs) affect the teen brain differently Adolescents are growing both physically and mentally, moving away from depending on adults and turning to their peers for support and guidance. They use technology to meet and interact with friends; 92% of teens report going on-line daily.

Peers are really important at this age, helping teens develop social skills and try new activities. But friends aren't always good influences-they may isolate, tease, or bully; they may promote attitudes and behaviors that parents don't like; they may apply peer pressure to engage in risky behaviors (sexually activity, using alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, etc.). We know that a pro-life approach works! Adolescents do best when they have supportive adults in their lives (parents, mentors), with good listening skills to help them navigate this challenging time. They also benefit from supportive programs like those offered locally by the Neutral Zone, YMCA, and Ozone House, among others. Encouraging changes recently are:

• • •

Teens are finishing high school at a higher rate, almost 90%! Teen pregnancy rates have fallen in every state and across ethnic and racial groups States are changing their juvenile justice approach back to rehabilitating young people, rather than treating them as adults (which has been shown to increase recidivism and violence) and using restorative justice more often in schools and courts

Parental involvement helps teens avoid risks like smoking, drinking, drug use, sexual activity, violence, and suicide attempts. For many families, simply eating dinner together can be an important way to maintain a connection. Helpfulinformation is available on websites like the Office of Adolescent Health (www.hhs.gov/ash/oah) and Stop Bullying (www.stopbullying.gov). CLE- For Reflection —> continued p. 11

For Reflection (continued from p.10) After three days they found him in the temple...and his mother said to him, "... Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety." And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?• But they did not understand what he said to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man. -Luke 2:46,48-52” Imagine the panic of Mary and Joseph when they discovered Jesus "missing, their apprehension as they searched, their joy upon finding him, their disquiet at his answer. Panic, apprehension, joy, disquiet- among the many feelings in raising a teen; in living a life. Ponder your own experiences. ''Talk over- in prayer with Mary and Joseph challenges during your own teen years, or with teens in your life. Open your heart to the Spirit who guides each of us, including our teens, to continue to grow in "wisdom and age and favor before God and man". We need only to listen, ponder, and respond -to the Spirit and to the needs of our teens! “Thinking of your teen as struggling to handle something difficult encourages you to help them through their distress. Thinking of your teen as behaving badly disposes you to think of punishment." -M. Rosenberg

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1

Drop everything, it’s the Lord! Would you ever consider stopping all you are doing and going in an entirely different direction? With obligations to family and jobs it’s unlikely you would suddenly turn your back on your responsibilities to pursue something else, but in a way that’s what the first apostles did. Their recognition of Jesus as the savior was immediate and their decision to literally drop everything was just as abrupt. They saw something so compelling and necessary for their lives that they had no hesitation in following him on the spot. You might not imitate their footloose example to the letter, but their actions do show how quick disciples of Jesus should be, whatever their situation, to respond without hesitation!

SUNDAY, JANUARY 29, 2017 FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Dollars and sense

Twenty billion dollars a year. That’s how much it’s estimated Catholic schools save the United States annually. As we observe Catholic Schools Week, celebrate the accomplishments behind these statistics: 6,600 parochial schools are staffed by more than 150,000 dedicated teachers K-12. The graduation rate from our schools is 99 percent. The percentage of our students who go on to college is 84 percent. Just as our teachers make sacrifices to create these “communities of faith, knowledge, and service,” so too do parents surrender comforts to ensure their kids learn faith and character along with the facts. Support our schools! TODAY’S READINGS: Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13; 1 Corinthians 1:2631; Matthew 5:1-12a (70). “Blessed are the clean of heart, for they shall see God.”

TODAY’S READINGS: Hebrews 12:4-7, 11-15; Mark 6:1-6 (325). “They left everything and followed him.”

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2

FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD

Let Christ light up your life

In addition to being the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Jerusalem Temple, the church also calls today Candlemas. From early times the church has blessed candles for the year on this day. Your parish may be blessing candles sometime this week. If so, take some candles to church to be blessed. Their light will warm your home, especially in the darkness of winter, and remind you of Christ, the Light of the World. Even the lowly groundhog gets into the act today, emerging from his hole to look for the sun. TODAY’S READINGS: Malachi 3:1-4; Hebrews 2:14-18; Luke 2:22-40 (524). “My eyes have seen your salvation . . . a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for the glory to your people Israel.”

MONDAY, JANUARY 30

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3

The expression “inner demons” captures something of the helplessness that those in the grip of negative behaviors feel. The ancients took that phrase literally, believing that illness was due to divine punishment for sin or demons taking up temporary residence in a person. The remedy was to seek forgiveness or a healer who could rid you of the bad spirits. While most people nowadays don’t believe that sicknesses and personality problems come from evil spirits or God’s wrath, there is still the need for reaching out to others for help when you cannot help yourself. Medical and other professionals, counselors, family, friends, and especially Jesus the Healer in prayer provide that assistance.

A full-throated blessing

Lord, come to our assistance

TODAY’S READINGS: Hebrews 11:32-40; Mark 5:1-20 (323). “Go home . . . and announce to them all that the Lord in his pity has done for you.”

MEMORIAL OF BLAISE, BISHOP, MARTYR; ANSGAR, BISHOP People instinctively turn to friends for help in difficult times. Because Catholics believe that in the communion of saints all believers, living and dead, are connected in Christ, we turn for help to saints who may intercede for us. Today is the feast of Saint Blaise, fourth-century bishop of Sebastean, Armenia. Legend has it that before his martyrdom he healed many, including a boy choking on a fish bone. In churches around the world today, Catholics will be getting their throats blessed and hearing, “Through the prayers of Saint Blaise, may God free you from ailments of the throat and from every other evil.” Amen. TODAY’S READINGS: Hebrews 13:1-8; Mark 6:14-29 (327). “I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”

TUESDAY, JANUARY 31

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4

Give your all

Take it to heart

MEMORIAL OF JOHN BOSCO, PRIEST, RELIGIOUS FOUNDER Saint John Bosco was born in Italy in 1815 into a family of farm workers. He became a priest and a teacher, devoting his life to the care and education of abandoned and neglected children. His approach was considered novel at the time: He used love instead of the threat of punishment to shape the behavior of his students. How can you support teachers and those who care for children? What are some ways you, in the spirit of John Bosco, can extend love, compassion, and respect to children, especially those most in need? TODAY’S READINGS: Hebrews 12:1-4; Mark 5:21-43 (324). “Jesus took the child by the hand and said to her, ‘Talitha koum,’ which means, ‘Little girl, I say to you, arise!’ ”

MEMORIAL OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

The monk and author Thomas Merton wrote: “There is no true solitude except interior solitude.” Solitude does not have to be a physical place, though it can be, nor does it have to involve silence, though it might. Rather, as Merton said, solitude is an inner space where you can rest quietly and alone in God’s presence—with no expectations and perhaps no words either—and experience the grace of God for what it is: a freely given gift you do not have to earn. Today, a Saturday and the traditional day for remembering Mary, join her in solitude to keep “all these things in your heart.” TODAY’S READINGS: Hebrews 13:15-17, 20-21; Mark 6:30-34 (328). “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.”
