Father ’ s Focus

I encountered an important phrase in my studies this summer, “The parish is the ecclesial movement.” What this means is that there are many movements within the Church today seeking spiritual renewal; but the parish itself is the primary way men and women encounter Jesus Christ and enter into his Church. The way in which St. Francis has fostered itself as an “ecclesial movement” is through stewardship. Stewardship is the response of a Christian disciple to the overwhelming love shown to us in Christ Jesus and expressed in communion of sacrament and life within a parish. Discipleship is the foundation of Christian life; stewardship is its response. As I mentioned last year, stewardship is to family life what discipleship is to marriage. Discipleship is one’s commitment to the Father, through Jesus in the Holy Spirit. Stewardship is one’s commitment to the body of Christ which is the household of disciples. But stagnation is lethal and malformation is caustic. A healthy parish is one in a constant state of growth. In other words, St. Francis must be a parish in a constant state of conversion to Jesus Christ through the generous practice of stewardship. Conversion is a form of organic growth which includes conservation, purification and development. It is for this purpose that we are inaugurating the visioning process. Vision is necessary and motivating. Visioning discerns the goals of a community and then defines the actions to reach its goal. Such a process sees the “lay of the land” that determines the “foot falls” of a community. It is essentially a dialogue among the members of the parish: a two-way conversation inviting parishioners to reflect on what is truly essential to the life of our parish, to listen to the Spirit, and to then share their inspirations. This dialogue will seek to gain people’s input about the hopes, dreams, needs and desires of each parishioner concerning our parish. The ultimate result of this will be a strategic plan of action. Two key components of a visioning process are essential: prayer and leadership. First, any Catholic visioning process is useless without prayer in the Holy Spirit. A visioning process is essentially an act of discernment as to what God wants for a parish. Thus adoration, intercession, and prayer gatherings, are essential, not ancillary, to this process. By fostering an encounter with Jesus who inspires us with the Holy Spirit this entire process will be motivated by God’s providence. Second, a parish visioning process must have leadership docile to the Holy Spirit’s movement. Thus we are currently discerning a leadership team for this visioning process who will serve as the motivating body behind the process. Please pray for us, through the intercession of St. Francis, as we select and form the leadership for this visioning process. Please ask the Holy Spirit to guide this whole process from beginning to end. In an effort to “keep our eyes on the ball,” so to speak, I will be reflecting on the “Vision of an Ideal Parish” in future Father’s Focus.

ADORATION CHAPEL

“By means of the angels, Jesus calls the poor and simple shepherds, in order to manifest Himself to them. He calls the learned men by means of their science. And all of them, moved by His inner grace, hasten to adore Him. He calls all of us by divine inspiration, and communicates with us by means of His grace. How many times has he invited us, too? And how readily have we responded? My God, I blush and become embarrassed when I have to answer such a question.” ~St. Padre Pio

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Adult and teen volunteers are needed to babysit for various parish activities. This is a great Stewardship opportunity to share your love with the children and young parents at St. Francis. Babysitters support parents by allowing them to take faith formation classes and participate in parish stewardship opportunities. Babysitters with their own young children are encouraged to bring them along and help out! Even if you are only available 2-4 times per year, we would appreciate your gift of time! Please call or text Sarah Steinert at 316-613-9507 or email [email protected] to sign up.

Our senses reveal the natural world to us, but often we have difficulty in seeing and understanding it. Our best hope at observing the glory of heaven is through the revelation of God. Jesus gives us clues in today’s Gospel of how we can work on accomplishing our salvation. We must take up our own cross and follow after Him. We must contemplate the final goal and carefully determine the steps that will help us reach that goal. May our gifts of courage and fortitude enable us to carry our cross against the enemies of the kingdom.

SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

Thanks to our parishioners who continue to use the Dillons Community Reward Program in our parish. Our parish is making a difference in the lives of those in need right here in our neighborhood! ST.
