Congratulations and thank you to all of the families that participated in our annual Fall Halloween Fun Fest! It was wonderful! We all owe a huge thank you to Krystal Fitzgerald, (our Parent Group Chairwoman), and all of the volunteers for a ‘spooktacular’ great time! Please join us on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. as we continue to celebrate our 35 years of Montessori education at Crystal Lake Montessori School! Geoff Akins Hannah, an International Bubbleologist and parent of students at CLMS will host an amazing bubble show about “Anything is Possible!”. We plan to feature the past and look into the future as we celebrate! All ages are invited and will enjoy this special event! Bring photos and small items for our display. We will be closed on Friday, November 11, in respect of Veterans’ Day, and our faculty will be having a half day In-Service that day. November is a wonderful month, a month for thanksgiving, gratefulness and gratitude. Tuesday, November 22, will be the day each level celebrates Thanksgiving at CLMS. You will receive information soon about what will be needed for this special day. The following day will be the start of our Thanksgiving vacation, November 23-25. In November we will be gathering 35 thoughts, quotes and examples of thankfulness and gratefulness. This will include ways that we can share these special thoughts and ideas with our friends, families and even people that we do not know. In celebration of our 35 years of CLMS. Please join us with your traditions and celebrations during “Thanksgiving”. On Friday, November 11 and Wednesday, November 23 when CLMS is closed, we are offering “Enrichment Days” for students. You should have received information about enrollment, times, themes and fees in your blue/red folder last week. If you need more information please contact Ms. Nadine or Ms. Nancy. Thanksgiving “Whenever we are appreciative, we are filled with a sense of well-being and swept up by the feeling of joy.” — M.J. Ryan Have a Joyous Thanksgiving Day and every day

Parent/Infant/ Child Class Thank you to everyone who participated in our fall events last month, they were a great success! As we move into November we will continue to explore the changing season and focus on the following topics throughout the month; “The Importance of Routine”, “Praise vs. Punishment”, “Grace and Courtesy” “Learning Through Senses” and “Gratitude”. If you are interested in joining one of our Parent/Infant/Child classes, please see Ms. Nadine for a free class visit!

Infant/Toddler Program (6 weeks to 3 years Full Day) Autumn leaves are falling, friendships are developing, and the children are growing in so many ways! There has been a focused interest throughout the month of October in activities dedicated to your child’s fine motor development. Spooning, pinching, transferring, and opening have been a joyful focus for each of our friends. Whether working together or individually, they each concentrate so intently on their work. As vocabulary develops, they are using each other’s name, sharing stories, conversing about their work, and communicating needs and desires to each other. We have been enjoying excursions around the beautiful outdoor environment of our school as weather and time permits. As the beautiful fall weather turns to winter snow, please send a heavy coat, mittens, hat or hood, snow boots, and snow pants. As items tend to look similar, please label everything you send. We will try to go outside any day the weather is above 18 degrees after accounting for wind chill. Items that are easy for the child to put on and remove help encourage independence. Having a coat with a large plastic zipper and one size larger than the child’s clothing size can help make the process easier. We are also working on the “coat flip” described in the Toddler article, so your child may be able to show it to you soon!

Toddler Program (2-3 Year Old) Fall is quickly passing by and as of last week we are seeing signs that winter will soon be arriving. The cold weather reminds us that it will soon be time to start wearing winter clothing. We would like to remind you to please have your child bring warm outer clothing for outside play. We do however adjust the amount of time outside dependent on wind, wetness, and temperature. You may have noticed your child is doing the jacket flip? To encourage independence, we place the jacket on the floor with the collar/tag by their toes. They place both arms into the sleeves and then flip it over their head. Ask them to show you! To try to avoid spreading colds, we have been showing our toddlers how to “catch’ their coughs and sneezes in their elbow. This personal care work prevents germs from being shared with their friends. The Lois Ehlert is our author of the month, we are reading books “Fish Eyes: A Book You Can Count On”, “Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf” and Nuts to You”. The toddler teachers would like to thank the parents for taking the time to meet with us during conference week. It was a pleasure to sit with you and talk about the progress of your child. The school will be closed for Thanksgiving break on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, November 23, 24, and 25th. Thanksgiving is a time of thanks. We are so thankful to the parents for sharing your sweet children with us. Best wishes to all our families for a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Children become like the things they love. – Maria Montessori

Early Childhood Program

Kindergarten Extension Class

(3-6 Year Old) Thank you to all the families who attended the Fall Outing at Von Bergen’s Country Market. It was a beautiful autumn morning for pumpkin, gourd and corn picking, as well as a fun tractor ride. We would also like to thank all of the parents for coming to the Parent-Teacher Conferences. We enjoy this time with you and, as always, welcome your support and input. For the month of November, the classrooms will continue our seasonal exploration of leaves, pumpkins, and apples. We will introduce reptiles and dinosaurs in our zoology studies. We will also “travel” and explore the continent of Europe. The author of the month is Jan Brett. She is the author and illustrator of many popular children’s books such as: The Mitten, The Hat, Gingerbread Baby, and Hedgie’s Surprise. Visit her website, www.janbrett.com to find many interesting ideas and activities. We look forward to our Thanksgiving Feast occurring on Tuesday, November 22. Look for information regarding the feast in your child’s blue folder. As the weather turns colder, please be sure to send your child to school with appropriate outdoor clothing, labeled with their name. We go outside daily when weather permits. This is an excellent time to reinforce your child’s independence and selfesteem by allowing him/her to dress him/herself. Lost items are easily found when your child recognizes and remembers putting them on that morning. As a matter of safety, please leave umbrellas at home or in the car. We wish a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving!

In November, we will be attending the Elementary Students’ Thanksgiving Celebration. We will be making the applesauce! We will study the first “Thanksgiving,” table manners, and how to introduce ourselves and others. While we are doing all of these special projects, we continue to work on our skills: reading, writing, math and research.

Lower Elementary Program October was full of excitement in Lower Elementary. Friendships continue to grow along with self-control and respect for one another. We began October with Parent/Student/Teacher conferences, a few well deserved days away and then we began full swing into preparation for our United Nations celebration. The week leading up to our celebration each Lower Elementary classroom welcomed student interns from our CLMS Middle School. They were a welcome addition to each class for the week. This year, for United Nations Day, each child researched and presented one of their ‘countries of origin’. The children love seeing how many different countries come together to make our community. October seems to have flown by, now we are looking forward to a great November and all of the enjoyment it holds for Lower Elementary. We will get to know friends in Upper Elementary as we begin to meet with our Reading Buddies, and bring out our theatrical side for the upcoming Readers Theater for our Thanksgiving celebration. Fall brings cooler weather, however it will not keep us inside! Lower Elementary children love to be outside and Lower Elementary Montessori children love it even more, so be sure they come to school with appropriate outdoor clothing!

Upper Elementary Program

Middle School News

We have really been getting down to business in our Upper Elementary! The students are working on the individual goals they set for themselves at conference time as well as receiving new presentations in all subject areas and working on practicing old concepts at the same time. We have gotten into the discussion of elections. While we respect all opinions, we keep our own to ourselves as we learn about how the election process works and gain a little insight on government. We also continue on with our monthly character education topics, focusing thus far on taking care of ourselves, others, and our possessions as well as making good lifelong habits for ourselves. We are also looking forward to getting started soon on our continent studies this year of Europe and then Africa.

Service learning is a key component of the middle school curriculum. Maria Montessori asserts that adolescents pass “from one stage of independence to a higher one by means of their own activity.” Adolescents are empowered with the knowledge that it is their responsibility to care not only for themselves but for others as well.

In October we enjoyed our field trip to the historical Woodstock Opera House to see and hear the duo, Switchback, play their authentically Irish and modernly Celtic music. We also enjoyed sharing our United Nations reports with the upper and lower elementary students. What a great mix of countries we had represented this year with each and every elementary student researching a different country. We learned a lot! Our feast is coming up soon! This is one of our most looked forward to days of the school year! We enjoy preparing a meal as a school and sitting down and sharing the fruits of our labors with the entire school. It is a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season within our school family as we head off to spend time with our own families and friends. Dates to remember: Friday, November 11th is a day off from school to observe Veterans Day. The Enrichment Program is available for students that day. Also, we are off Wednesday, November 23rd through Friday, November 25th for Thanksgiving. We hope you all have a wonderful holiday with family and friends and that you each find much to be thankful for. We, here at school, are thankful every day for our students who make us laugh, think, smile, learn, push ourselves, and love each day at school. Thank you for choosing to send them to CLMS. We are thankful for all of you.

To support this vital aspect of the curriculum, the students have been busy volunteering to teach numbers and sounds in the early childhood classrooms, assisting during every morning arrival, and partnering with the Algonquin /Lake in the Hills Interfaith Food Pantry; weeding, harvesting food and completing general maintenance. Derek Emmert hopes that “someone eats the long beans that were picked.” That will be the case. The food harvested for the pantry goes directly to local families in need. Frank Lavin really “liked feeding the horses and picking carrots” at the garden and Jacob Freundl thought it was fun to “drive the wheel barrel around.” All in all, the students are making direct connections with their local community and having fun doing it. Also, the students recently assisted Mr. Tom in making dramatic improvements to the back playground area of early childhood. The differences these students are making are tangible and in Phillip Paulson’s words he, “hopefully (is) helping someone.” In regards to service learning, Miranda Guidry states, “I learn more about the community.” The service learning efforts culminate for many students during the GCAP (Global Citizen Action Project) conference trip to New York City. All eighth grade students had the opportunity to travel this past October to New York to take part in the decision making process for GCAP. There they listen to a myriad of speakers who represent various charitable organizations. The speakers were young like-minded people who want to make a positive impact on the world. Our students, joined with other Montessori students from around the United States, then voted on which organization they would take back to school for continuing fundraising efforts. Additionally, our students toured the United Nations and met with a diplomat from the permanent German Mission in New York. The students learned about their role as human ambassadors and that they represent not only their local community but the world at large. Reflecting on her service experiences Audrey Turner commented, “I feel like I am making a difference.” Service learning in the Montessori environment is meaningful and impactful.

Middle School Students Attends Global Conference Last month, Ms. Lori, Mr. Brad and Ms. Nancy accompanied the 8th grade Middle School students to New York City to attend the Global Citizenship Action Project annual conference. GCAP is a professional conference for Montessori Middle School students from all over the United States, Canada, and elsewhere who gather annually to hear from speakers on a variety of global issues, tour the United Nations, and visit a permanent mission to the U.N. The aim of the program is to inspire young people to learn what they can do to become better-educated and more productive global citizens.

While the eighth students were away in New York City, the seventh grade students were building community and creating relationships with the younger students during classroom internships in classes at CLMS. Each

Annual Auction & Benefit Event*

March 2017

Box Tops/Labels for Education

All school year

*These events need a chairperson or co-chairpersons to organize and lead the efforts required for the events. The Annual Auction & Benefit Event is our biggest fundraiser of the year and is the event that requires early preparation and plenty of decision making! This event requires a chairperson or co-chairpersons as well as a committee to assist with various activities for the event. The planning for the event typically starts in late October/early November as the auction format, venue, date, and theme get finalized, and then continues with procuring donations, making final preparations for the event, and leading the event on the event date. This isn’t as scary as it sounds! There are plenty of folks willing to assist with the event – we just need someone to lead the event and form a committee to get it done! Valentine’s Dance-Chairperson Tracey Connor This event is a very popular evening of dancing, socializing, and having some great DJ’s provide music and fun activities throughout the evening. This is definitely an event that you won’t want to miss! Happy Thanksgiving! November is the month we like to slow down a bit and regroup from all of the Fall activities. It is also the month we reflect on all of the things for which we are thankful. We are thankful for the opportunity to send our children to CLMS and for them to experience all of the wonderful ways of learning, exploring and growing that the teachers and staff offer and allow them to experience on a daily basis. We are also thankful for all of our parents who have supported us and will continue to do so because they want to be a part of their child’s education and help form their experiences at CLMS. We really appreciate

all of our leaders, coordinators, volunteers, staff, and parents who have helped support the Parent Group – Thank You! The Parent Group is a wonderful way to meet other parents and stay connected with the various programs and events we sponsor. From social, to service, to fundraising there is an activity that hopefully speaks to you in some way. Please come and see what we are all about. We would love to have your ideas and suggestions! Please join us for our next PG meeting on Tuesday, November 15 at 8:45am in the Parent/Community Room. We look forward to seeing you there! Jump Rope for Heart As part of our 35 year anniversary, the Crystal Lake Montessori School will be participating in “Jump Rope for Heart”, sponsored by the American Heart Association. This will be an educational and community service activity. The Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, and Middle School classes will all participate. The actual “jump” event will be on Thursday, November 17, during Physical Education classes---we will incorporate “35” into the activities-- 35 ways to jump, 35 ways to be healthy, 35 healthy foods, and 35 different exercises. For the next few weeks, during PE, the students will be learning about heart healthy lifestyle choices with an emphasis on exercise and nutrition. They will also learn some fun facts about how the heart functions. Did you know that the heart beats about 70 times per minute and pumps 5 gallons of blood each minute and 2000 gallons a day? Wow!! It is the strongest muscle in our whole body—and it never stops pumping!!! We all need strong and healthy hearts!! This will also be an optional fundraising event. If you and your friends and family would like to make a donation, please refer to the information that went home with your student in their red folders on Oct. 19. The funds will go to the American Heart Association and will be used for education and research to help save lives. Heart disease affects babies, children, and adults of all ages. Our school goal is to save 20 lives by collectively raising $1000. Again, we are promoting this as a community service for our children to participate in for the greater good. Each child will receive a thank you gift whether they contribute donations or not. Thank you!

The Crystal Lake Montessori School closure due to poor weather conditions policy is to follow Woodstock and/or Crystal Lake Public School’s decision to close. We will send a message to your telephone using SchoolMessenger, an automated telephone service and we also use “The Emergency Closing Center” to report school closings. See the information below, or go to our school’s website, clms.org, and click on the Snow Days link. Because the families at CLMS come from a wide area, even if CLMS does not close and your area is unsafe, please stay home. You can always come later in the day when the roads become clear and safer to travel.
