Newsletter 30 November 2016, Term 4 Week 8

Dear Parents and Guardians, The $2.5million project for four new classrooms at Larrakeyah Primary School has commenced and construction is progressing. One classroom will be a purpose built computer lab and the other rooms will be upper primary classrooms. The elevated building also allows for a large undercover area and a line of sight through to the oval. This year we successfully trialed a Year 6 class with a modern learning furniture layout that supports innovative pedagogy and student learning – observed in NZ schools. We will be continuing with this in the new building. Although the new building will not be completed until Term 2 next year, we are excited about having additional classrooms which are greatly needed with our increasing enrolments. We also look forward to new playground equipment in the middle/upper primary area. Larrakeyah Primary is an accredited Cambridge International School. Our teachers have access to world class resources to support the Australian Curriculum. This semester we have been looking at the curriculum frameworks, schemes of work and resources in preparation for next year. Teachers have worked in year level teams to create year level plans to integrate Cambridge into our existing whole school writing scope and sequence and other ongoing programs. Cambridge Primary Curriculum (English) will be implemented to support the Australian Curriculum across year levels in 2017. We look forward to the Disco this Thursday at 5.30pm to 8.30pm.

Regards, Fathma Mauger Principal

News from the Larrakeyah Primary School Board Your School Board met on Monday 28 November 2016 with the agenda focused on closing items and ratifying the draft budget for 2017. In addition, we received an outstanding presentation on the 2016 achievements of our Student Leadership Tea. Well done and thankyou to Elodie Wagnon and Nicholas Tziolis for an informative and professional presentation. Hails. We welcomed local Member for Port Darwin, Paul Kirby, onto the Board as a coopt member. Paul brings an array of skills including the opportunity for us to connect directly with the NT Government. We look forward to working closely and thank him for his support. Farewells. On behalf of the School Board, I would like to thank Rick Collister and Alison Walsh for their service and support on the Board. Over several years, Rick has been a steady hand on the team, providing timely advice and appropriate alternative opinions to ensure the Board's decisions are well-considered and support all stakeholders. His noteworthy achievements include his role as OSHC Supervising Officer; being instrumental in the successful implementation of ECA; and, a key driver behind the Year Six Singapore trip. Thankyou Rick and we wish you all the very best on Long Service Leave. See you in 2018. New to Board in 2016, Alison has supported fundraising events, in particularly the School Family Fun Day, and provided input from teaching staff on matters which affect them. Thankyou Alison and we wish you a speedy recovery. Budget and Money. The draft budget for 2017 has been adeptly compiled by Fathma and Katina (Business Manager). The Board-approved budget depicts the funds to be expended on the operational (eg power, water, furniture, cleaning) and educational (eg stationary, materials, IT) items required to deliver the educational program at Larrakeyah. It is in draft as our funding for 2017 does not get confirmed until February. The Board are delighted to inform you that not only is this a comprehensive and responsible budget, but one which ensure the School will remain financially secure throughout the year. I cannot over state the efforts of Fathma and Katina and their ability to successfully plan to run the School within extremely tight means. Well done and thankyou. Approved expenditure. Due to the sound financial management, and accumulated funds from Board entities, the Board has approved funding to support the purchase of

IT to implement an on-line canteen system (for 2017), top-up funding for the Assembly area projector (which now will include an integrated PA sound system), and funds for Upper Primary playground. School Book Pack. In 2017, you will receive your Back2School Voucher ($150). The Board requests you consider using this voucher to purchase the School Book Pack. It will include: Your child’s year’s worth of stationary ($120), a school shirt ($25) and either a hat or library bag ($5). The pack has been improved and is better value than 2016. If you choose not to purchase the pack from the school, you will be given the stationary list and will have to purchase it from your local newsagent/stationary supplier (eg Officeworks). Parental Volunteer Contribution. Each year we ask families to pay a volunteer contribution towards their child’s education. We appreciate that not all families are able to contribute but for those are, please consider paying this small fee. Our budget is tight and every bit goes directly towards improving student outcomes. School Board 2017. The Board AGM will be Monday 13 March. With a few faces departing, including myself, I ask you consider over the holidays if you would be willing to commit to serving the School by nominating for the Board. Please email me if you would like further information as holiday homework. A huge thankyou to the School families and community for your enthusiastic and highly valued support towards all events throughout the year. I think you would agree that the participation of parents and friends at fundraising events, in the classroom and around the School has continued to grow throughout the year. Larrakeyah’s School community and your participation is what makes us great. Thankyou. I look forward to working with you all again (and flipping snags, selling raffle tickets, battling fairy floss machines etc) in 2017. And finally, the Board wish all students, teachers, staff, parents, guardians and friends a safe and Merry Christmas and look forward to seeing you all relaxed and refreshed to start 2017. Merry Christmas Phillipa Tziolis Chair Larrakeyah Primary School Board m. 0438 102 651 e. [email protected]

Wow! Today we had over 50 Defence Students hanging out together for a Farewell Pizza Lunch. 20 Pizzas & 52 icey poppers were eaten. A big THANK YOU shout out to Colleen Roberts for her wonderful help to get the kids fed while the pizza was still hot. It was loud & chaotic but yummy & fun. It was also great to see the kids together as an ADF family that supports each other.

Thanks to the ladies that were able to come along to the Morning tea. Hope you enjoyed the famous Apple Tea Cake and TimTams. We will have a Welcome afternoon tea early next term 2017 so ADF parents can meet & catch up & chat over a cupppa & cake while welcoming new families to the LPS Community.

Thank you to those that have emailed me with your posting out dates & if you know your child’s school next year, please let me know. If you would like your child’s school little blue Passport updated or need a new one prior to departure please send it in. I would hate for anyone to miss out on their farewell mementos.

This time of year can be frantic & stressful as well as fabulous & festive. Depending on postings, deployments, etc, it can all become a little overwhelming. VISIBLE LEARNING

Last Friday, Mrs Harvey, Ms Beynon and Mrs Tamaotai presented at the Darwin Region Showcase to regional staff, leadership teams and teachers from other schools to showcase Larrakeyah Primary’s work in Visible Learning and Assessment Capable Writers. This was a fantastic opportunity for schools in the Darwin Region to share their school’s successes, ideas and journeys with Visible Learning.

Larrakeyah Primary showcased a video focusing on peer feedback and what makes a good writer at Larrakeyah. We also showed examples of the writing that is happening around our school. This included Transition Mattiazzo’s awesome story books and poetry from 3 Matthews and 6 Harvey. Everyone commented on the great writing our students are doing. We also showed some of the new strategies teachers have learnt through their participation in the Assessment Capable Writers Project and how they are implementing these in their classrooms.
