June Newsletter Dear Parents, The last week of May was fantastic for outdoor learning with our hugely successful Wonderful World Week. The five days were packed with outdoor walks and visitors coming into school to share their expert knowledge. The children really enjoyed the week. Thank you to all the teachers who organised such a great week of learning and thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time to support the children through accompanying then on their local visits. May was also highly successful in the world of chess with 11 of our children, from Chess Club, competing at the regional competition. A huge thank you to the time and support from Mr Sheppard who started the Chess club and continues to run the club on Tuesday mornings, and also Mr Watts, Mr Howells, Mr Ryman and Mr Brooks. Year 5 Swimming Year 5 begin their Curriculum Swimming on the 13th June. Please ensure that your child has the appropriate swimming equipment on a Monday morning (swimsuit – no bikinis please and a towel. A swimming hat and goggles are optional). Thank you. Maths Information Evening On Wednesday 25th May we held a Maths Information Evening for parents. All the parents who attended said the evening was very helpful in aiding their understanding of how maths was taught at Whitewater and how much maths had changed since their time at primary school. These evenings really give parents an opportunity to delve deeper into the teaching and learning of the curriculum and we would strongly encourage parents to attend other evenings in the future. Reports Class teachers have just started the long and important process of writing your child’s report. These will be given to parents at the end of the academic year. Your child’s report will contain information based on the new measures for assessment against Age Related Expectations. There will be some slight adaptations from the previous year’s format so a letter will accompany the report to explain these variations. Class lists for September 2016 The class lists for September will be given out later this term. The class teachers begin meeting and thinking about the new classes towards the end of June. The lists then need to go through several checks and drafts before we pass this information onto parents. It is a very carefully considered process and we ask for your patience during this half term whilst we work on assembling the lists and arrangements for next year.

Sports day arrangements Sports day will take place on the morning of Wednesday 6th July. The events are expected to finish at about 12.30 p.m. and so we would like to invite you to stay on and have a picnic lunch on the school field with your child. The children will return to class for the remainder of the afternoon and you can go home for a well-earned rest from all the cheering and supporting in the morning! Please see the newsletter in July for any further details. Our reserve date for Sports Day is Wednesday 13th July, if the weather is exceptionally poor on the 6th July. Staffing We have a number of staff leaving and joining our school at the end of this academic year. As previously reported before half term, Mrs Fairley’s last day is this Friday. We wish all the very best in her new role. Also leaving us from our LSA team will be Mrs Butler who has taken the difficult decision to finally retire. We will miss these adults but we wish them well on their next journey. However, as some adults leave us, others are joining our team. We warmly welcome Miss Vinton and Miss Benton who are joining our SNA team. We are also welcoming two new members of our teaching staff in September – Mr Peter Grinham and Miss Holly Tillcock. We are looking forward to all our new adults starting with us over the next few months. KS2 SATs, KS1 SATs and Phonics Testing The Year 6 children completed their intense week of exams for their KS2 SATs at the end of May. They managed the week maturely and confidently - we are all very proud of them. Year 2 children have also completed their end of KS1 SATs. The results of these tasks, in reading and maths, are used to help inform teacher assessment and are not formally reported. Year 1 will be completing a Phonics screening check during June. This is carried out with Mrs Proctor on a one-to-one basis. You will be informed of whether your child passed this check at the end of year by the class teacher.
