Wednesday 4 November 2015

Dear Parents and Guardians I hope that you enjoyed the half term break. The first half of the term ended as busily as ever. I waved off the First Form bonding trip, the St Ives trip and the Greek trip. The Cabaret evening was a real treat, showcasing a range of talents in a most entertaining way. I was fortunate to travel to Greece in the first week of the holidays and was delighted to meet up with the Greek trip in Tolo. The staff and girls were certainly enthusiastic and inspired by the places they saw. On my return to the UK, it has been a pleasure to start to explore Prior’s Wood with Sascha’s eager support. The woods are obviously home to a wide range of flora and fauna, and are looking beautiful now that Autumn has set in. I am confident that they will be a huge asset to our curriculum as well as providing opportunity for adventure, sport and play. This week, I have already been frightened by the Boarders’ spooky supper and enthralled by the fireworks. From today until Friday, we are looking forward to talking to applicants for a Sixth Form scholarship. I am also excitedly anticipating the Duke of Edinburgh annual presentation and the Shakespeare Festival performance at the Leatherhead Theatre. At the end of the week, we are welcoming girls to our boarding taster prior to Preview Day on Saturday. Next week, of course, David Starkey will be presenting the Huxley Lecture on the Magna Carta on Tuesday 10 November (there is still time to buy your tickets) and preparations are well under way for our Careers Fair on Thursday 12 November – all welcome. Best wishes Tracy Kirnig

pf:achievement Congratulations go to: Lilyella Harland Fairweather who won silver at the European Biathle Championships (Hungary came 1st and Turkey 3rd). After the first leg of running, Lilyella entered the sea water in about 3rd place, emerged from the swim in 5th and managed to finish in 2nd! Over half term, Lilyella also competed in 3 cross country events. In the South of England cross country relays in London, her team of 3 girls won silver. In the Surrey cross country relays, again her team of 3 girls won silver! Finally in a border League race, Lilyella came 3rd. What a fantastic fortnight – well done, Lilyella! Jess Adams who won the Surrey Girls Championship during the holidays! Jess won the Rigg Quaich for all girls in Surrey with a handicap of 10 or below. She won in the final at Farnham Golf Club – it was a very close match: 2&1. She holed a 10 foot putt to win. This is a brilliant achievement. Well done.

pf:drama CABARET CONGRATULATIONS Well done to all the talented ladies who contributed to such a successful and entertaining evening on the Wednesday before half term. The variety and professionalism of the evening was a credit to the company and was acknowledged by a standing ovation by the appreciative audience. This was a fantastic launch for the Student Theatre Company and we look forward to similar events in the future! TREADING THE WEST END BOARDS Ambassador Theatre Group; West End Performance Course Lotti Norman and Lucy Gebbie spent a week of half term working with West End directors and musical directors. They devised and performed a 20 minute production based on “The Children’s Crusade” by Brecht to an invited audience on a West End stage. What an amazing opportunity for the girls to work in Trafalgar Studios with industry professionals and in a company with other actors. SHAKESPEARE SCHOOLS FESTIVAL Henry V Good luck to the lower school cast who will also be performing on a professional stage this Thursday as part of the Shakespeare Schools’ Festival. Tickets are available at the box office of Leatherhead Theatre and we look forward to seeing many of you there supporting the girls. (Mrs Horton)

pf:sixth form The Friday before half term gave the Fifth Form the opportunity to sample life as a sixth former during our Sixth Form Taster Day. Both our current Fifth Form girls and several prospective new girls were able to try out a bespoke programme of A level lessons in the subjects of their choice. The lessons gave an insight into the style of A level teaching, illustrating how different lessons will be when the girls join the Sixth Form next year. The girls also had the opportunity to relax in the Sixth Form house, making tea, coffee, hot chocolate and toast. Lunch was served in the Sixth Form café area and the girls were able to make full use of the fantastic facilities in the Sixth Form loft. During the afternoon there was a Sixth Form games lesson teaching self-defence techniques. The day concluded with a taster session of our extra-curricular Sixth Form lecture programme. The girls were enthralled by an inspirational and motivational presentation by Mollie Hughes, a young woman who, amongst other things, has recently climbed Mount Everest. Several excited young ladies stayed behind to chat to Mollie about her experiences; a seed may have been sown! We hope that our current Fifth Form departed for half term feeling excited about their future here at Prior’s Field Sixth Form and motivated to set their goals high for their future. (Mrs Jan)

pf:young engineers The Third Form entered into the Young Engineers challenge to build a scale model of a shelter with great enthusiasm, imagination and enterprise. The shelter, made of k’nex, had to have a secure door, be watertight, house five people and have light powered by a solar panel. Congratulations to Minoushka Helliker, Isabel Plumbe, Alice Syson, Grace Whitlam and Pippi Williams on their winning design.

pf:sport On Monday 12 October the 1st XI Hockey played in the Surrey U18 Hockey Finals. The young Prior’s Field side unfortunately lost both their matches against St George’s and Epsom College but finished in 4th place overall in Surrey – a superb achievement, and Prior’s Field’s best performance in hockey ever! The team get a second chance to qualify for the South Regional Championships today in a pre-qualifying match against Peter Symonds College from Southampton. Good luck to everyone. Monday 12 October: Netball 1st v St Catherine’s School. Lost 12-35. Player of the match: Erin Saunders. 2nd v St Catherine’s School. Lost 5-19. Player of Match: Verity McPhail. Tuesday 13 October: Hockey U13A v St Teresa’s Effingham. Won 3-0 2nd XI v Charterhouse. Won 2-1 On Tuesday 13 October, the swimming squad competed in a gala at St Teresa’s, Effingham. Well done to all those who swam! Thursday 15 October: Hockey v Farnborough Hill U13B Won 11-0 U13C Won 4-3

pf:tennis academy On 12 October, Jasmine Williams after a long period recovering from injury had a great win in a match play tournament, adding more points to improve her UK national rating. Well done Jasmine. Jasmine was also runner up in 16&U category, G-5, at Ash Tennis tournament on 30 October. Following her victory of the weekend of 12 October, Isabella Tarrant won another tennis tournament on 19 October, this time at Woking and Crocket tennis club in 14&U category, G-4. She performed really well, adding more points to her national ranking. Well done Isabella and keep going. Isabella also won the 14&U category, G-4, at Bradfield Tennis tournament on 30 October. Congratulations also to Emma Stewart who, with a great performance, achieved a good win at Heston, 16&U, G-5, on 18 October. Well done Emma and keep it up. Great results for the Prior’s Field Performance Academy girls.

(Mr Martin)

pf:sports tour to Holland The Second and Third Form had a wonderful time on a hockey and netball tour respectively in Valkenburg. The netball girls were treated to some brilliant training sessions lead by a coach from Loughborough Lightning culminating in a 4 team tournament at the end of the week. The training had obviously worked for the Prior’s Field girls, as they left Holland victorious. The hockey girls had a slightly different experience, sampling the Dutch style of play. After a couple of light training sessions, the girls faced HC Nuth and HC Tegelse. The standard of hockey from the Dutch teams was naturally high but the Prior’s Field girls matched them well in phases and produced some strong individual performances. The lessons learnt from these matches will stand the girls in good stead for the remainder of the season. Highlights of the trip include the laser tag and tobogganing on the last morning, the bowling night at the local bowling club and the biggest pancakes and waffles we have ever seen! Well done to all the girls who represented Prior’s Field wonderfully! (Miss Cram)

pf:first form bonding trip Welsh Bicknor On Wednesday 14 October, the First Form packed their bags and travelled to Welsh Bicknor for 3 days of outdoor adventure and team building activities. Activities included canoeing/ kayaking, climbing and team challenges where they were able to demonstrate good cooperation and resilience. The final evening was spent baking bread, playing competitive board games or relaxing watching a movie. Overall, a very successful bonding trip. (Mrs Baines)

pf:a level textiles trip Knitting and Stitching Show On 10 October the Sixth Form textile students had an inspirational trip to the Knitting and Stitching show in Alexandra Palace, London. Here they had the opportunity to collect ideas for their A level work or talk to professionals about possible careers. At the show the girls looked at the work of many leading textile artists, such as Michala Gyetvai, Sue Dove and Kate Jenkins. They were also able to see innovative knitwear in a fashion show created by Kingston University students to celebrate the very best of contemporary design. (Mrs Barnes)

pf:old girls We were delighted in October to welcome back the Class of 1992 for the now annual sleepover reunion - 6 OG’s staying in the boarding house on the Friday night, watching DVD’s and chatting late into the night. They were joined by the rest of their year group and former teachers in the morning for coffee. Nostalgic tours around Prior’s Field followed by a lunch and wine in the new library left the ladies chatting into the afternoon. All agreed they were so glad they had come along to the reunion although many of the OG’s admitted how nervous they have been on their journey that morning back to school! Thank you as always to the catering staff for the amazing food, the maintenance staff for helping out and of course the Sixth Form staff and girls for being so hospitable. The OG’s really love these reunions and they are very much a team effort. (Mrs Bushell)
