Principal’s Report

Dear Coburg SDS Community

Coburg SDS

We have had a tremendously busy couple of weeks. My apologies for the lateness of the newsletter there were a few unforeseen circumstances which prevented it going out last week.

25 April - 6 May 2016

I attended a briefing for special school principals a couple of weeks ago where some information was disseminated with regards to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS.) We were advised that students who attend a special developmental school are automatically eligible for the scheme, this does not automatically apply to students who go to a special school or those who attend a main stream school under the Program for Students with a Disability funding. In short this means that all of the students attending Coburg SDS are eligible for the program when it arrives at their local city council. The NDIS will become available:  in the North East Melbourne area from 1 July 2016 i.e. Banyule, Darebin, Nillumbik.  in the Hume Moreland area from 1 March 2018 i.e Hume, Moreland.  in the Western Melbourne area from 1 October 2018 i.e Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melbourne. It is important that families seeking advice with regards to NDIS seek that advice directly from NDIS as there is a lot of misinformation about the scheme being provided by a range of agencies. The students have been very busy with ANZAC day and Mother’s day activities. We had a great turn out for our Mother’s Day morning tea with around 20 parents and family members in attendance. Angelina needs to be congratulated for her effort in organising and promoting the day. The staff had their own special afternoon tea and this was to raise some money and promote the challenges for people affected by cancer. Janine was the engine room behind this event and it was great to have a lovely afternoon tea, all for a worthy cause. Thanks to Janine and her team for organising the event.

Our Leading Teacher Oliver Cloke was invited to the launch of the Croxton School’s Positive Behaviour Support Program. Coburg SDS has a strong history in developing a positive behaviour approach to support our students and it was great we were invited to this event in recognition of this. Oliver is currently at the forefront of developing a network amongst special schools to support students with disabilities with their behaviour in a positive and engaging way.

Developmental School held an “Afternoon Tea”. It was a successful event raising $145 for the Cancer Council. Thank you,

ANZAC Day at CSDS On Friday 22nd April, Coburg SDS all joined in with some activities to commemorate ANZC Day. The activities were making a poppy, making a medal, creating a wreath, cooking ANZAC biscuits and reading stories about ANZAC Day. The event was held in our new Library/Resource Room, and every class had an allotted time to spend doing the activities. Justin ran the wreath making activity and some beautiful wreaths made. The students were very proud of their work. Oli ran the medal making activity and there were many students proudly wearing their medal as they went back to class. The students were also excited to see Janine’s Grandfathers’ medals. Chloe ran the baking activity. The beautiful smells coming from the kitchen made us all feel hungry. The students were delighted with their ANZAC biscuits. Yvette made communication aids for all the activities so everyone could make choices and communicate to others during the activity. Sally ran the poppy making activity and we ended the day with our own field of poppies. Annie came and assisted with the activities as did all the classroom teachers and support staff. Some students enjoyed some quiet time listening to stories. Thank you all for making this a wonderful day. It was exciting to see our students engaged in these activities. Regards Sally Smith
