Dear Parents/Carers The imminent removal of the African Mahoganies has sparked concern among students, parents and the community about the impact on the Brahminy Kites who regularly nest in them. One of our parents, Ally Bryce works for Darwin Wildlife Sanctuary. Currently she is working with students in 2/3 Baldock and 3/4 Delamotte, conducting a study of wildlife in our school grounds. Ally is trying to secure the expertise of someone who has the skills to replace and manage nesting sites. Hopefully we can relocate the nest and encourage the Brahminy Kites to stay. Thanks Ally for pursuing this important issue. Before and after school in particular can be busy times in the school yard with lots of parents, toddlers and children moving around the school. For safety reasons we ask that all members of the school community walk their bikes, scooters, skateboards and ripsticks through the school grounds. Please remember too that children should always wear a bike helmet. I know that children have been learning a lot about road safety with Mrs Turner and Mrs Magoulias recently so I hope they are thinking of the important messages they receive in these lessons when out and about in the community. Student led conferences were held last week and it was good to see so many people take the time to come along and let their children tell them about their learning, discuss their progress and set new learning goals. Please remember, if you wish to speak with your child’s teachers at other times you can contact them via email or make an appointment through the office. Next Friday evening our school choir will perform at the Darwin Performing Arts Centre in the BEAT. Ms Stephen and the choir students have worked hard throughout the year to be ready for this exciting performance. Our Jingili band also worked hard and has been asked to perform two songs in the forecourt at 6:30p.m. before the BEAT. If you want to come along and be impressed by the talent of our young people you can buy tickets from the Performing Arts Centre. The performances in the forecourt before the show is free. I hope to see many of you at the Fathers Day Breakfast tomorrow morning from 7 a.m. Thanks to Kari Taylor for her great organisation and to everyone else who has been supporting her. Your help is greatly appreciated. We hope that the money raised from this event will go towards buying some more outdoor furniture for our middle area. Kind Regards Carin Symonds

OPEN DAY Thank you to everyone who attended our Open Day on Saturday. We hope those of you who attended, enjoyed sharing some time at Preschool with your child. Our ‘Instant Café’ was a big success, and we would like to thank everyone who contributed their time and baking skills. The cakes and slices were delicious. Our local Fireman even supported our cake stall after they visited the Kindy for a false alarm. Particular thanks to our Parent Advisory Group for their endless help, and to Jane Fryar for allowing us to borrow the café furniture, her urn and coffee makers. Thank you to the Kitchen Garden members who also attended and shared their products and information with our families. A last “Thank You” to the amazing Preschool staff for giving up their Saturday morning! We raised approximately $261.40.

There will be a garden working bee during the school holidays and we will be looking for lots of volunteers to help out. Watch this space for more details. Have fun in the garden.

Literacy Numeracy Week Celebration 25-29 August On Monday 25 we were very lucky to have Sandra Kendell author of:

http://www.windyhollowbooks.com.au/collections/titles/sandra-kendell Who came to visit our older students and talk to them about being an author and the process of making a book. Sandra has donated a set of her beautiful books to our library and to the preschool. On Friday 29 August at 2pm teachers, students and parents at schools across Australia participated in the Read for Australia activity. Jingili Primary School joined in and read this year’s book Sunday Chutney by Aaron Blabey to celebrate National Literacy and Numeracy Week. Sunday Chutney Sunday Chutney by Aaron Blabey explores many themes such as friendship, self-reliance and the importance of family. We also started a Rolling Poem on Monday in 2/3 Baldock and it moved through the school during the week, each class added two lines to the poem called Explore. The poem is on display in the office area. Many classes did fun Maths activities; Mrs Morgan’s class had fun with fractions, making pictures from halves, quarters etc.

EXPLORE By Jingili Primary School

Riding a camel to Uluru I saw a scurrying potaroo, Splashing in the wonderful waterfalls of Kakadu I saw a fancy dancing kangaroo, Along came a stinky dingo Looking for a game of bingo, Flying past was a red-winged parrot Munching on a juicy carrot, Up a tree clambered a possum Sucking on a grevillea blossom, Swimming in the river blue Out jumped a crocodile coming for You!!! In flew a swift bald eagle Swooping at a cute fluffy beagle, Here comes a black kite Her wings stretched out in soaring flight, Whilst watching giant termite mounds Near Litchfield National Park, Out crawled a blue tongue lizard From the dark, A slippery slimy green tree frog Is waiting for a crunchy lunch on a hollow log, The fierce and stumpy wombat Engaged in territorial combat, While I was driving oh what a sight I saw a koala flying a kite, I swerved to miss a sneaky snake Who was basking in the sun with a belly ache.
