PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Welcome back – Term 3! Where has the school year gone? I want to encourage our Year 12 students to “keep at it”! Know that we are all here to help, you just need to ask. The Year 9 Ski Trip students leave Monday morning and with the recent weather events, I am sure they will arrive to great snow and skiing conditions. I wish them, and the dedicated staff and parents who will accompany them, a safe and enjoyable week! There are also a number of Year 9 students doing Work Experience during this week. Thank you to the many local businesses who have given them this opportunity. I am very pleased to advise that Clare High School has been allocated funding of $3.5 million under the State Government’s STEM Works (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program announced in the 2016-17 State Budget. Under the program, we will invest in building and upgrading STEM facilities. Clare High School has been recognised as having Primary enrolments (our Year 7s) and has qualified as one of only 18 State R-12 Sites to receive this funding. Our collaboration with Clare Primary School and our Partnership Sites gives us an avenue to share this amazing opportunity and to lead STEM learning from birth to Year 12 within our community. What does this mean? In consultation with our school community, Clare High School can upgrade our learning spaces to meet the needs of our students and to promote innovative and collaborative learning across all year levels. It is not just about science lab or tech space upgrades but there is flexibility in regards to what this might look like at our site. The learning spaces have a design that allows for whole class activities and explicit learning with attached smaller rooms and outside learning spaces to encourage small group work, creative thinking and problem solving tasks. It is an understatement to say that this news came as a surprise and a huge motivator for us all as we consider the future possibilities. Clare High School is an amazing school with great students and families and hard-working, committed staff. It is so exciting to think that some of our longer-term Continued next page

plans can be implemented and fulfilled within the next two years. Have a great week! Sharryn Daly Principal Staffing Belinda Stringer is finishing up at the end of this week. Belinda is expecting her third child and we all wish her and her family all the best for the future. She will be missed by her students and all the staff who work with her. We welcome Kirsten Mooney who is teaching English across Years 8 to 11. Karen Slattery has taken on the role of English Coordinator for the rest of this year, and is also managing the Open Access program.

CANTEEN NEWS Thank you to the following people for their support for the canteen: Suzi Earle and the Jamieson family for a donation of produce. •

If you have some time or produce you can donate to the canteen. We would love to have it. Thank you. The canteen staff

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability We have commenced the annual nationally consistent collection of data on school students with disability (‘the Collection’). This will involve the collection of: the number of students receiving adjustments to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students; the level of adjustment provided to students; and where known, the student’s type of disability. Under the Collection model the definition of disability is broad and includes learning difficulties, physical health and mental health conditions. If your child is identified for inclusion in the Collection, the required information about your child will be included in this year’s data collection. If you have any questions about the data collection or you do not wish for your child to be included in the process, please contact Rebekah Holland on 08 88422788 Further information about the Collection can be found at: http:// www.education.gov.au/nationally-consistent -collection-data-school-students-disability.

Hi everyone. Welcome back to Term Three. As we progress into Semester Two, we have many extra-curricular activities underway and the teaching and learning is progressing in positive measures.

snowboard for the annual Ski Trip. Some Year 9s will be completing a week of Work Experience. We hope all students enjoy their experience in Week 3.

STUDENT REPORTS SEMESTER 1:

We have SAPSASA Basketball this week (Wednesday) and this year we have three teams (two boys and one girls) heading to Balaklava to participate in this day. Mr Daniel Hutchings, Mrs Diedre Earle and Ms Kristy Lewis will coach on the day, and we have eight Year 9/10 helpers assisting on the day. Good luck to you all!

At the end of last term your child would have come home with their Semester One report. I know many parents take the time to have a good read through their child’s school reports. We encourage conversations with your child to occur, and we also ask you to monitor your child’s progress throughout the whole year by logging onto the Parent Portal of Daymap. If you are not aware how to do this, please contact the IT department for support. NAPLAN RESULTS AND NAPLAN ON-LINE TRIAL: We are yet to receive information and results about the 2016 NAPLAN tests. We usually receive these reports midTerm 3. When we receive this information, results will be posted home to all parents. Also in the middle of this term we will be running a NAPLAN online trial with some of our middle school students. This is a state -wide initiative to prepare all schools for the NAPLAN testing that will be online from 2017 onwards. More information will be distributed to parents. YEAR 9 WEEK 3 ACTIVITIES: Next week we have some students heading to Mount Hotham to experience some time learning to ski /

Biggest Morning Tea Stand

CANCER COUNCIL YOUTH AMBASSADORS 2016 Every year, a group of teenagers from Years 10-12 in SA are selected to be a part of the Cancer Council Youth Ambassador Project. This year four students from Clare High applied and were selected: Adam Burford, Caitlin Pink, Holly Wood and Isabelle Graham. These four students have to undertake three challenges in which they will raise awareness, fundraise and present a speech to a group of people of their choice, all the while improving their leadership skills. As well as completing the challenges, the ambassadors attend regular leadership workshops in Adelaide with Cancer Council and Proteus Australia, and get to meet some amazing world leaders. So far Adam, Caitlin, Holly and Isabelle have completed their fundraising challenge, having held a Biggest Morning Tea here at school. They raised $405 for the Cancer Council which was a huge amount and much more than expected. Thank you to everyone who donated food and supported the event. With one challenge completed, the Ambassadors are now part way through completing their second challenge, raising awareness. To do this, they are holding a Breast Cancer High Tea in August. It would great to see as many people there as possible showing their support for this great cause. Details are to the rightQ “A very big thank you to everyone from Clare High who has helped make it possible for us to be a part of this program, particularly Mrs Sharyn Daly for all her support and Mrs Rachelle Maynard, who has helped us organise everything as well as driving us to and from Adelaide regularly. We really do appreciate everything you do for us.” Adam Burford, Caitlin Pink, Holly Wood and Isabelle Graham
