Club Annual Car for 2015: for Minitrix operators, there is the era III silo car type Kds 56, for Trix H0 and Trix Express its smaller brother the type Kds 54.

Dear Club members, Welcome to the Club year 2015 – an anniversary year, as the Trix Club reaches its 15th birthday. And that calls for celebration. The Club has certainly developed into a lively platform for the exchange of information, with the help of its exclusive models. For all those who have been in the Club from the start, there is also a smart tank car which we introduce for the first time in this issue.

Please inform us in good time of your new address so we will know where we can reach you. A simple application to the post office to forward mail is unfortunately not enough. Thanks for your cooperation!

Another feature is naturally the new Club models. The Minitrix class 78.10 steam loco with its short tender and wide digital sound spectrum signals its special nature, and we look exclusively with the Märklin designers at the H0 loco 18 537 inside and out. The poster page “Technology in Detail” is this time reserved for the exclusive Annual Car for 2015, always awaited with such eager anticipation: the magnificent era III silo cars for Minitrix, Trix H0 and Trix Express have certainly earned this attention through their unique features.

Concept and art direction, pre-press production

It is a special pleasure for us to introduce another cooperation partner under the ‘Scene’ heading. The Bajuwarium World of Experience in Straubing celebrates Bavarian life with buildings they themselves laser-cut, armies of Preiser figures, fascinating lighting technology and 80 trains. There is reduced price admission for Club card holders – another example of how you can benefit from Club membership. That brings us to the subject of a new series on Club benefits: We also give a complete summary of the long series of Annual Cars from 2000 to 2015. Enjoy reading your Club News!

CLUB ANNIVERSARY 2015

The platform for Trix fans Fifteen years of the Trix Club: We take a look back over the exclusive Club models and Club-events – and forward too: The anniversary car for 15 years’ Club membership is here.

T

he Minitrix, Trix H0 and Trix Express brands stand for tradition-conscious model railroad pleasure, and we are correspondingly proud of the 15-year-old Trix Club and the Club members who are loyal to us”, says Uwe Müller, in overall charge of product management for the entire Märklin concern. Fifteen years of the Trix Club also means that Trix Product Manager Claus Ballsieper has produced an exclusive model for Club members with 15 years’ membership

behind them. “It is a delicately-designed tank car for the Deiglmayer Oil Mills in Munich Ost, which was registered with the Royal Bavarian State Railways – with spoked wheels, brakeman’s cab and ladder up to the small platform protected by railings by the tank lid”, is how the product manager describes the anniversary model. “The car dates from the provincial railroads era, so it doesn’t compete with the Annual Car for 2015, which is from era III”. To be fair to all, the same prototype for the anniversary model has been used for Club members with

Trix is producing three special cars for those with 15 years uninterrupted Club membership of the Trix Club. For Minitrix (item 15555), Trix H0 (item 24221) and Trix Express (item 33967) a privately-owned tank car of the Deiglmayer Oil Mills Munich Ost, registered with the Royal Bavarian State Railways, is being produced. The era I car is outstanding for its fine lettering, spoked wheels, brakeman’s cab and separately-applied parts like the steps and handrails. The anniversary car will be introduced in the next issue 02/2015. The order form will be included with that issue.

➞  a preference for Minitrix, Trix H0 and Trix Express. “We wanted to achieve a recognition effect covering all sections and which would promote the feeling of all belonging to the same Club”, explains Claus Ballsieper, who for the same reason is so pleased with all the Trix round tables established, where those with similar interests meet to chat and exchange the latest on models, layouts and railroads in general. Members help select Club models From many conversations at trade fairs and exhibitions and meets with Club members at the annual round tables with the Märklin management team, the product manager knows what the model railroad scene would like. “That’s where our quality requirements and imaginativeness in putting our product range together come from”, explains Claus Ballsieper, who has trodden new ground on many occasions, such as with Minitrix and the firebox flickering in the Club model 18 612 just released, the class 200.1 with two loudspeakers, the successful N-scale buses or the laser-cut building kits like the Dammtor station kits or the ‘Warehouse City’ houses. The desire to offer the Club members something extra special is very obvious in particular with the Club models. It all started in 2000 with a streamlined class 03.10 in N-gauge (see box left) and the express steam loco 10 001 for Trix H0 (see page 7). Shortly after the merger of Trix and Märklin in 1997, the idea was mooted to make a Club offer to H0 enthusiasts operating the Trix two-rail DC system and Trix Express as well as Minitrix enthusiasts. The Club was also supported by renowned experts in the field of model railroads such as the gifted layout designer Rolf Knipper or the “Eisenbahn-Romantiker” Hagen von Ortloff.

Exclusive for Trix H0: Only Club members can obtain an example of all versions of the famous world-record class 05.

The Club was a winner right from the start with exclusive offers which today include the Club ‘Annual Cars’, Märklin Magazin, the Trix Club News, two DVD Chronicles, exclusive Club models and richly-illustrated catalogs. Then there are also the concessions enjoyed by Club card holders from the many Club cooperation partners and musicals. On top of this, the Club is always on the move, such as to the inauguration of the historic pier with Train City in Blankenberge, Belgium; or 2005 in the USA on the track of the ‘Big Boys’ or now to Hungary to the Györ factory or this year on a pilgrimage to the Gotthard ‘Crocodiles’. Minitrix: Digital decoder is standard With the Club models, care is always taken that they are locos appearing in the respective range for the first time, such as in Trix H0, the class E 93 electric loco (2014), the streamlined loco 05 003 of the record-breaking 05 class (2014) and now the class 18.5. New designs also characterize the Minitrix range, with 18 612 or 78 1001 of 2015. “To cover all the angles and preferences, we have alternated in Minitrix in recent years between steam, diesel and electric locos”, explains Product Manager Claus Ballsieper. The digital decoder has now become standard, since this is essential for controlling a number of the functions. “Digital locos can be run in analogue mode – and Club members should be able to enjoy many controllable functions as well as the digital sounds of railroad operations”. Minitrix Annual Car 2015: The privately-owned car ‘Frankenzucker’ is a powdered freight silo car of type Kds 56. In the prototype, each container has a capacity of 17 cubic meters (600 ft³).

CLUB BENEFITS PART 1: THE ANNUAL CAR

Club special train In a series, we acknowledge the advantages which make Club membership so worth while. We begin with the exclusive Annual Car, which members of the Trix Club receive free of charge.

T

he Club offers its members a wide range of information – whether about the latest trends in model railroads, new products or tips in the Märklin Magazin for designing your own layout, background knowledge in the Club News or film reports on DVD in the Annual Chronicles. We introduce all these in a small series together with other benefits, such as the Club and special models for anniversarists, reduced fares on Club trips or the reduced entrance fees offered by cooperation partners when you present your Club card. The first part will be devoted to the Annual Cars,

only available to Club members and free of charge as a benefit of Club membership. The Annual Car is an unmistakable recognition sign amongst Club members, often displayed with the pride of a collector in a cabinet, or for a change, included in a special train consist. “We know how popular the Annual Cars are, so we always try to seek out special prototypes”, explains Trix Product Manager Claus Ballsieper. “This is why there are such unusual types in the Minitrix ‘Annual Cars’ freight train as gas container or crane cars, cars with extravagant lettering or with the logos of

almost-forgotten or once well-known brands like ‘Tonwaren fabrik Schwandorf ’ or ‘Weinhandel Meuschel’.” There are still more than enough examples for unusual models. One of these for instance was the Annual Car 2004 (item 15335) – the service wagon of the Royal Bavarian State Railways, loaded with three driving wheelsets of the Bavarian class S 3/6. Also worth seeing are the privately-owned tank car “Presshefen- und Spiritus Fabrik A. G. Nürnberg” of 2010, with spoked wheels and separately-applied parts (15363) or the 2014 “Eberl Bräu” refrigerated car with brakeman’s cab and ice hatches (15954). By tradition, the prototypes for the Trix H0 and Minitrix Annual Cars date back to era I. Club members voted on line in 2013, and 40 percent voted for the provincial railroad era, and a quarter voted for era III. “To be fair, the era III enthusiasts will have their turn this year; we have selected a prototype full of details”, states Product Manager Claus Ballsieper. The Minitrix Annual Car for 2015 (15955) boasts boarding ladders, walkways and pipework. The era III type Kds 56 powdered freight silo car is privately owned by “Frankenzucker”, and on the prototype its two high silos have a total capacity of 34 cubic meters (1200 ft³). The Kds 54 version, with a capacity of 25 cubic meters (883 ft³) is to be produced as H0 Annual Car 2015 for Trix H0 (24815) and Trix Express operators (33915). “It is important to us that the Annual Cars have a historical connection”, explains Claus Ballsieper. “The 2013 Club car ‘J. A. Maffei’ for example appeared on the 175th anniversary of the founding of the little Maffei ironworks in Hirschau, which grew to become one of the most famous loco constructors in Europe, and the Franconia sugar factory played a major part in the sugar beet campaigns of the 1950s”.

Club trip to the Gotthard and the Furka Steam Railway The Swiss Club trip in 2015 “Myth of the Gotthard with Crocodile and Furka Steam Railway” from June 27 to July 2 2015 promises to be an intensive railroad experience. Breathtaking views of the mountain ranges, the gigantic Rhône glacier and the blue Lake Maggiore will be part of the backdrop of the Club event, run in cooperation with Bahnreisen Sutter. As the Gotthard Base Tunnel will shortly be opened, peace will soon be descending on the mountain section, but on the Club trip, members will still be able to enjoy the kaleidoscope of railroad activity with heavy freight trains, Intercity trains and passenger multiple units. Two special trains (see panel) will certainly be the highlights of this Club trip: with the “Crocodile” Ce 6/8 14253 we head from Erstfeld over the Gotthard to Locarno and from Realp a Club special train starts out with full steam over the Furka Pass and past the Rhône Glacier to Oberwald. No less varied is the remainder of the program: there is the stroll through the beautiful town of Locarno, the visit to the Verkehrshaus of Switzerland – a transport museum – or the Museum Sasso San Gottardo with multivisual exhibition and the fortress on the Gotthard Pass at an elevation of 2,108 meters (6,916 feet). There’s always plenty to enjoy. Club members amongst themselves love discussing the model railroad hobby.

S

he is standing at eye level in the illuminated Minitrix showcase at the Modellsüd 2014 exhibition: For the first time, Club members and many N-gaugers admire the Minitrix Club model for 2015. Still a hand-finished prototype, 78 1001 has fierce competition in the showcase from the attractively-liveried tourist train class 218 and the S-Bahn Dresden train set with its colorful promotional loco E 182 016-6 (see P. 24) – and still the class 78.10 with its good proportions and characteristics of a rarity draws all eyes. The class only ever had two steam locos, which were rebuilds of machines of two machines in the 38.1040 class. They were modified with an enclosed engineer’s cab and a two-axle tender. A loco from the huge Prussian P 8 family with a short tender? That stands out. All the more so when 78 1001 is produced for the first time in N-gauge as a series model: a completely new tooling exclusively for the Club members and fully equipped, as usual for Minitrix, with digital decoder and extensive sound functions. Built in the early 1950s, the 78.10 was the result of a good idea: Short of tank locos for inter-urban rapid transit, the German Federal Railroad had many machines of the proven class 38.10-40, but when running in reverse, these could only reach half of their maximum forward speed of 100 km/h (62 mph). So without ado, 38 2919 and 38 2990 were rebuilt to tank locomotives and approved for service in March 1951. Instead of the large tender with a coal capacity of seven tonnes and water capacity of 21.5 m³ (5,680 US gallons), they now had an all-welded 2T 17 short tender, permanently coupled to the loco with a drawtrix club news  1.2015

bar and with a capacity of five tonnes of coal and 17 m³ (4,491 US gallons) of water. The machines thus converted into 4-6-4 tank locos with two high-pressure cylinders were given the road numbers 78 1001 and 78 1002. “Initially used in the Munich regional headquarters (BD) area, the rebuilt locos were later on the Augsburg BD’s strength and worked in the Lake Constance region”, according to Horst Obermayer’s book (“Dampflokomotiven” - “Steam locomotives”). Work of art: Lots of electronics in the short tender Minitrix has modeled the locomotive with the road number 78 1001. Loco and tender of the Club model are of high-quality die cast zinc, which gives this premiere loco for the N-gauge the necessary weight for good adhesion, driven on all three axles and supported with traction tires. The metal also makes the loco pleasant to handle. In the boiler of the loco, 106 mm (4-3/16") long over buffers, the designers have accommodated the motor and a flywheel which ensures finely-balanced deceleration. Design department has achieved a minor miracle in fitting the digital decoder and the sound generator in the tender. After all, it’s not only the prototype short tender which has less space for operating supplies: The model too is mean with space for installing the electronics. Formats supported are DCC, Selectrix and Selectrix 2. In operations, the 2015 Club model livens up the layout with its many sound functions. When 78 1001 running with steam loco sounds arrives with brakes squealing at the station, the station announcement sounds. Then come three further sound function: the air-pump, the safety valves and the loco whistle.

DETAIL

Unusual tank engine: In 1951, 78 1002, the identical sister loco to the 2015 Minitrix Club model, showed her best side off to photographer Carl Bellingrodt.

➞  “When a steam loco stops, you immediately hear the

air pump”, says Carl Asmus, Chairman of the Dampflok-Gesellschaft München (Munich Steam Loco Society). “Air is released from the brake pipes to apply the brakes, and now has to be refilled”. A short pop on the loco whistle is sounded before restarting. “Meanwhile, the steam in the cylinders has cooled down a bit and partly condensed, so the engineers opens the cylinder drain cocks to let out a mix of steam and water”, as Carl Asmus explains. Then with its twin warm-white headlights lit, 78 1001 sets off on the road again, and we immediately hear the fireman shoveling coal once again. “But after a strenuous trip, the fire sometimes has to be tended when the

loco is at a stand, so we do occasionally hear coal being fired in the station”. Shaking up the grate is heard in the loco depot When in the depot we hear two sounds of shaking up the grate and the switcher whistle. “The tender is topped up with water and coal is taken on in the depot”, explains Carl Asmus. “Apart from that, the ash-pan has to be emptied and the rocking grate is used for this”. Finally, the switcher whistle is used for communication, either when making switching moves or between train engine and pusher engine on heavy passenger trains and freight trains to coordinate their actions.

DETAIL

The model’s appearance is enhanced by many separately-applied parts The extravagant external design of the class 78 10 matches the backdrop of living sounds. Sand fall pipes are cast with the boiler, as are steam pipes and regulator rod, the steam whistle sits atop the boiler behind smoke stack, sand and steam domes, on the right-hand side the reversing rod slopes gently down and away from the cab, past the boiler feed-pump to the valve gear with its connecting rods, coupling rods and links. The two state railroad lanterns with warm white LEDs sit on the buffer beam, above them the smokebox door with the separately-applied road-number plate. The two-axle tender of this passenger tank loco is also finely detailed, right from the twin headlights and the two separately-applied ladders up to the water tanks through to the coal bunker filled with imitation coal. The era III short-tender tank engine can thus show itself off in a self-confident fashion alongside the unusual Minitrix steam loco Club model of the Giesl-ejector-equipped class 50 (12350) and the express loco 18 612 just being delivered. Successful: The model of 78 1001 captures precisely the atmosphere of the prototype, which is enhanced by the separately-applied parts such as smoke deflectors, ladders to the tender and engineer’s cab or the plate bearing the road number.

EXCLUSIVE CLUB MODEL 2015 IN H0: CLASS 18.5 LOCO PLUS PASSENGER CAR SET

The finer points of Club model 18 537 High level of detailing, many digital functions: The Trix design team has had a resounding success in the field of model building art with the 2015 H0 Club model of the famous class 18.5.

DETAIL Rear view: The 2’2’ T31.7 tender is characteristic for the class 18.5; the coal compartment of the model can be taken off to reveal in the water tank the basic circuit board, decoder and loudspeaker. The triple headlights on the back of the tender are controllable.

D Front view: The front of the loco is particularly striking with the small Wagner smoke deflectors, boiler saddles, cylinder rods and ladders to the decking. State railroad lanterns sit on the buffer beam, and a DB reflex glass lamp on the smokebox door. The leading idler truck runs in a guideway.

Side view: Most attractive the fine rodding of 18 537, the pierced bar frames, the imitation inside valve-gear and the pipework and regulator on the boiler – many of these are separately applied parts and stand away from the boiler.

esigner Jochen Hoffmann carried out a very close study of the special aura of the exclusive 2015 H0 Club model: “The aura of 18 537 radiates from the long, long boiler, the open straight-sided cab, the striking smoke stack and the dainty Wagner smoke deflectors with their delicate openings. On the chassis, the large, attractive wheels and the view right through under the boiler are prominent, thanks to the pierced bar frames”. The completely new tooling is the first class 18.5 loco in the Trix range. It has a very high degree of detailing and it profits from the renown of its prototype: “The mighty four-cylinder class 18.5 express locomotives were famous, and we have modeled this member of the Bavarian S 3/6 family as an era III loco as it would have been running in 1958/1959, that is, with the long 2’2’ T31.7 tender, which makes a very interesting picture”. Designer Hoffmann knows the model, worked out as a team effort, from A to Z, and points out some details worth seeing. “Take for instance the fine rows of rivets on the tender, the detail on top of the dome and the smokebox door, or the pipework routing – most of the pipes are separately applied, and stand away from the boiler”. Conspicuous is the effect of the setting rod of the safety valves with cowling or the handrails along the boiler, which gave the crew of the locomotive a handhold when they had to mount the decking. Noticeable as well as the engraved boiler bands and imitation crossheads for the inside cylinders are the front of the loco with its free-standing state railroad lanterns, boiler saddle and the piston rod protectors, the ladders to the decking by the smoke deflectors and the and the separately-applied road number plate.

Sets standards: With her finely-designed superstructure and many controllable functions, H0 Club model 18 537 is a real showpiece. The new design is backed up by the passenger car set, also produced by Märklin exclusively for Club members.

A visual delight: The model of Pacific loco 18 537 stands for one of the most successful steam loco designs ever.

Prototype: German Federal Railroad (DB) class 18.5 express steam locomotive, with tender 2’2’ T31,7. With short Wagner smoke deflectors, straight engineer’s cab, German State Railroad lamps below, DB reflex glass lamps above and buffer plate warning stripes. Road number 18 537. As running in about 1958/59. Model: With digital decoder and extensive sound functions. It has a controlled high efficiency propulsion motor with a flywheel in the boiler. All 3 axles driven. Traction tires. Locomotive and tender constructed mostly of metal. The locomotive has a factory-installed 72270 smoke generator. The triple headlights that change over with the direction of travel and the built-in smoke generator will work in conventional operation and can be controlled digitally. The engineer’s cab lighting and the firebox glow can also be controlled digitally. The headlights are main tenance-free, warm white LEDs. Drawbar with close coupler mechanism between loco and tender. On the tender a close coupling with guide and NEM pocket. Minimum radius for operation is 360 mm (14-3/16"). Piston rod protectors, brake hoses as well as figures of a locomotive engineer and a fireman are included. Length over buffers 26.5 cm (3-1/8").

Thanks to the digital decoder, the Club model incorporates a mass of running fun – but that was certainly a challenge for the loco design team. “The Club model has an enormous number of functions such as flickering in the firebox, engineer’s cab lighting and triple headlights; the smoke generator is located in the boiler together with the drive, flywheel and worm gearing, so there are many wires leading through the loco which have to reach the circuit board in the tender via the drawbar”, says Jochen Hoffmann as he explains some of trickier work concealed beneath the outer surface. By contrast, the long tender of the class 18.5 offers enough space for the electronics. The decoder is located in the water tank and is easy to reach: The coal bunker latches in place and is easily removed. Under the electronics there sits the sound capsule which radiates the sound from the sound generator downwards between the trucks. There are ten controllable operating sounds, starting from steam loco sounds, loco and switcher whistle to shoveling coal, shaking up the fire and the air pump. So that the magnificent model can delight Club members with its running characteristics, drive and running gear has been very carefully balanced, down to the precisely-calculated flywheel which ensures deceleration appears realistic too. “The high-performance drive works via a worm gear on the rear of the three driving axles, whose wheels are fitted with traction tires. Power to the other two driving axles is transmitted through the connecting rods”, as designer Hoffmann explains. A good, solid balance has been achieved trix club news  1.2015

DETAIL

Well-balanced center of gravity ensures the loco runs smoothly for the center of gravity, so important for smooth running: The weight of the motor on the track is at the rear to ensure sufficient power to haul long trains, and there is an additional weight in the front of the boiler to balance this. Wheel contact is even guaranteed for current collection through difficult curves, turnout configurations and on hilly sections.

Permanent drawbar between loco and tender “So that 18 537 looks good in curves, instead of a bent towbar we have fitted a permanent drawbar which has a close coupler mechanism on both sides, which allows the locomotive to leave a curve smoothly”, says Jochen Hoffmann telling us of another special characteristic. For the leading truck to swivel to either side without fouling the cylinders or any other parts, the truck frame runs in a guideway, and is not pivoted. “The Club model thus always displays as compact an appearance as possible”. Its behavior in curves was repeatedly checked in the CAD software by the design team during development, and the prototype fulfilled all expectations. Naturally Karl-Heinz Grässle, Product Manager H0, also made sure that 18 537

did a turn in quality assurance up hill and down dale with the five passenger cars which are being produced exclusively for Club members to match this loco. “The passenger train with ‘pike’ cars, Bavariantype express train cars and baggage car is impressive in its varied composition”: Karl-Heinz Grässle is well satisfied that in 2015 he will be able to deliver Club members a DB passenger car set (Märklin), which will do full justice to this elegant and technically fully-equipped Pacific locomotive. NEW CLUB COOPERATION PARTNER: THE BAJUWARIUM

Brilliant Bavaria Bavarian life-style and Bavarian living environment – these are the main themes of the Bajuwarium World of Experience. The large model railway layout in Straubing is a cooperation partner of the Club.

T

he town of Straubing and its famous Gäuboden folk festival extends over 140  square meters (1507 ft²) in the Bajuwarium in 1:87 scale and 80 Märklin trains run on 685 meters (almost 2250’) of K-track; all buildings are faithfully laser-cut and there are everyday scenes observed and modeled from real life. “Visitors can look at Bavaria and even become a part of it”, says Bajuwarium manager Jürgen Horvath getting straight to the heart of the concept. “By public demand, we are actually building an area next to our own workshops where visitors of all ages can join in and play or help build”. And that is their avowed intention: “The Bajuwarium awakens an interest in model railroads, or strengthens it considerably”.

22

And the builders of this world of experience are already being remarkably successful. After their first visit, around 15 percent of the visitors use their entrance ticket as part-payment towards an annual pass. One visit just isn’t enough. “The layout has two totally different faces through the change within 30 minutes from day to night alone”, says Jürgen Horvath. “By day you can discover all the finely-modeled details, while in the six-minute night sequence you can enjoy the delightful charm of a lively town with its illuminated shop windows and the attraction of a cheerful folk festival”. The “fine details” fall into three groups. First of all, the laser-cut buildings, created with the help of CAD architectural data, handdrawn original plans or photographs, and then the motifs are trix club news  1.2015

The Bajuwarium makes no concessions, as the decorations of the famous city tower with its five spires demonstrate: “The hands of the tower clock were made for us by a goldsmith, and the original glockenspiel plays”. The buildings bring forth a typical reaction from observers: “Ooh, I know that place – I’ve been there”. The second group is made up of lifelike representations – and some 9,000 figures are currently taking part – the little family on the park bench, the car stuck in the mud on the fair meadow, the frog in the road, or the circus elephant just breaking out. Additional information on the Bajuwarium The Horvath family has selected the modernized firing shop of former brickworks to set up south Germany’s most ambitious H0 model railroad project: The giant Straubing module is now in place in the Bajuwarium’s World of Experience, and it will shortly be decorated with 20,000 typically Bavarian figures. The second module is due to come into operation in 2015 and with 1,200 meters (3937’) of K-track laid will have almost twice the amount of track that the Straubing module has. “At the center will be the rail junction of Plattling, 14 km (8.7 miles) from Straubing, where ICEs between Frankfurt and Vienna call every two hours”, we hear from Jürgen Horvath who, along Manuela Wölfl-Horvath, manages the Bajuwarium. Future plans include the modeling of other parts of Bavaria as well as of the Austrian, Italian and Swiss Alps. The Bajuwarium aims to attract a wide range of visitors. Thus there is a baby’s changing room, and the layout can be viewed by wheelchair and walking frame users barrier-free.
