Hi everyone! Autumn is finally here! The leaves are changing colours, the birds are migrating south, and the days are becoming shorter. My favourite thing to do in the fall is cozy up by the camp fire and watch the stars. What is your favourite part of the autumn season? Do you enjoy the foods of fall? Like pumpkins, squash, and seeds? My friends and I enjoy raking up the leaves and taking turns jumping into them! The other day I saw an eagle soaring high in the sky. Do you know what Grandfather teaching the eagle represents? In some clan systems, the eagle represents love. It is said that the eagle has the ability to fly highest and closest to the Creator, who is kept closest to our hearts. The eagle also has very good eye sight, and it can see all the ways of being from great distances. The eagle teaches us to love ourselves truly and to love others honestly, to be at peace with ourselves, to find the balance of life and all things. This makes me think of the many ways that I can help others. Being kind to others makes me happy, and it is nice to be a giver of kindness. This summer, my friends and I made a kindness list. Anytime we offered help to others we would write it down. Rabbit helped her neighbour to plant flowers, and Moose invited his school friends to a picnic. We all learned many ways to show kindness every day, and we even came up with new ideas for how to be kind to one another. I have made many new friends just by being kind and helping people. What are your favourite things to do to help others? Signing off,

Amick

Caring for Mother Earth Did you know that oceans cover 70% of the earth’s surface, and are home to the majority of the world’s living creatures? Oceans are a vital part of the water cycle that brings rain to our forests. They also produce a large amount of the oxygen that humans and animals depend on to breathe. Oceans affect so many other things in nature, like our weather patterns. When the water absorbs the heat and light from the sun, it creates warm and cold waters that move in complex patterns all over. These patterns control how the heat from the sun gets redistributed around the planet. It is amazing how the ocean is influenced by the sun, which is millions of kilometres away from our planet. It’s even more amazing how humans are influenced by the oceans and the different environments that they create. There are so many ways that we rely on nature, which is why we should be kind to Mother Earth. In return, nature is kind to us by providing all the things we need to survive.

Fun Facts DO YOU KNOW HOW DEEP THE OCEAN IS? Source: YouTube

Scientists on the research ship E/V Nautilus discovered a dark purple blob that has never been seen before. Scientists believe this is a type of sea slug, and investigations of the blob are ongoing.

The ocean is so vast and deep that sunlight can’t even reach the ocean floor in most places. The deepest known point is in the Pacific Ocean, at 36, 200 feet below the surface!

There are five oceans on planet Earth. They are: Arctic Ocean Atlantic Ocean Indian Ocean Pacific Ocean Southern Ocean The largest one is the Pacific Ocean!

Polar Bear Headband Materials you will need: • White and black construction paper or felt (black marker to draw the eyes and nose will work as well) • Scissors • Pencil • Craft glue • Body measuring tape or string Step 1: • Measure the size of your head, from forehead to the back of your head, just above the ears. This can be done using body measuring tape or by marking a piece of string. Step 2: • Using the white construction paper, draw and cut out your polar bear headband to the length of your head, leaving 2 inches extra for overlap (if your head measures 17”, make your headband 19“ long). See example below. Step 3: • Cut out the eyes and nose for your polar bear. • Place the polar bear’s eyes and nose on the headband using craft glue. Step 4: • Glue your headband together, by overlapping the two ends. Be sure not to overlap the two ends more than 1 inch, or your headband might be too small!

Club Amick’s Trip to Kashechewan In June, Fallon Andy and Nancy Cooper flew from Toronto to Kashechewan, for a special art workshop. As an Anishinaabe artist from Couchiching First Nation, in northwestern Ontario, Fallon showed students different ways to create art. For the younger grades, Fallon taught students how to draw different shapes. The older students used the computer lab to design their own memes, which are images with funny captions, and GIFs, which are short animations created from multiple images. They had such a great time with the kids. Nancy hopes that they can visit again soon!

Answer: Third feather from the right.

Family Time As parents we all want to raise kind children who will turn into kind adults. Caring about the well-being of others makes us feel better about ourselves. There are many ways we can incorporate kindness into our daily lives and teach our children that kindness is something that works both ways! 7 Day Kindness Challenge Ask your family members if they would like to take part in a seven-day kindness challenge. It’s really easy to set up, just use the chart below and check off each kind thing you accomplish in a day. Encourage your children to think about how they can be kind in different ways with different people. Can they bring tea to their auntie? Can they help one of the little kids with their reading? Can they help dad with the dishes? Encouraging empathy and teaching children to accept the feelings of others are very helpful strategies for parents. Kindness is contagious, pass it ON! 7 Day Kindness Challenge o Make your bed. o Hug your friend. o Play with your cousins. o Say please and thank you. o Be on time for school. o Offer to help your teacher. o Feed the dog. o Play with the baby for 10 minutes. o Step up for someone in need. o Read to your little brother or sister. o Be kind to yourself and eat a healthy snack. o Share your lunch with someone who forgot his or her lunch at home. o Take your dishes to the sink after you are finished eating. o Create your own kind deed.
