HUNTING NEAR HOME It is always nicer when you can enjoy a day of hunting when you don’t have to drive half way across the state. In years past they had a successful Hunters Access Program that provided access onto private lands. That program has declined over the years, primarily because of lack of funding. Well, our DNR has received a $1.2 million federal grant to get this program back up. Our speaker will be the man in charge. MIKE PARKER, Michigan DNR’s Hunting Access Program Coordinator kicked off this expansion last month, and he will bring to us all the details of what he is doing and how it will affect our chances to gain access to new hunting grounds close to home. Monique Ferris of our Soil Conservation District is working with Mike and will also join him for our program.

Rick Wendzik won the Ruger Pistol, then won the 50/50 Ruger Single 10, 22 LR Revolver to be raffled Identification Statement Saginaw Field and Stream Club Newsletter is published monthly by the Saginaw Field and Stream Club. P O Box 2092, Saginaw, Mi 48605- 2092

A Word from the President Mike Meyer

(State of the Club - Highlights of 2014) Capital improvements - Lower pistol range Expanded the lower pistol range – doubled in size Constructed a new canopy over the shooting line - Renovation of indoor archery Removed wall to allow for 30 yd shooting as well as providing a seating area for spectators - Purchased porta-potties for the range areas - Improved the acoustics in the meeting room New Activities - Women’s shooting alliance - IDPA/Defensive pistol Shooting - Thursday afternoon Euchre Games - Regions Archery Shoot Financial Highlights - Paid down building loan by $24,000 half of which came from building donations, brass recycling and sales from our donation table - Paid down Log House loan by $6000 - 2014 Outdoors banquet at Horizons produced the largest net profit since we’ve had it. - Trap and Skeet operations have historically been our second largest money maker, but in the last few years that has been surpassed by archery events. - We have begun to make our newsletter available by email which, once we get the bugs worked out, is on track to save us $8-$9000 per year Youth Events - We have held annual training for Youth Archery, Youth Smallbore rifle and Youth Shotgun, as well as our Hunter education class in September. - We allow Thomas Twp the use of our indoor archery range for youth archery classes. Focus for 2015 - This year, we are planning to improve our entrance road. With the significant amount of traffic that it sees, we have had a serious problem with potholes. Hopefully, we can find an affordable way to improve the road to eliminate this problem. Highlights of the business meeting: - Mike Mosca was recognized as Member of the Year for his numerous volunteer activities. Vaughn Siler received the President’s Award, and Clarence Huebner and Andy Graves received special recognition for their service to the club. - Dale Winters and Dennis Burns decided to not run again for the Board of Directors. They were honored for their past service as board members. - Rob Komyathy, Jim De Clerck, Joey Lee, Greg King and Tom Heritier were recognized ning and representing the club -

for their efforts in run-

15 year old Caitlan Boehler was recognized for her harvest of a nice 8 pt buck during the youth hunt.

Election of Directors Wayne Hanson, Charles Hoover, Robert Komyathy and Pat Reis ran for board positions as incumbents, Carl Hubinger and David Anderson ran as nominees from the previous membership meeting. Because there are 7 board positions available, all six were voted in as directors by acclamation.

A big thank you goes out to Cabelas for their donation of 3 cases of shotgun shells to our youth shotgun training that starts in late spring. Before that though, is the youth small bore training, starting in April. Watch this newsletter for more details in the coming months. Saginaw Field & Stream Club held a thirteen target lead at the end of the third shoot of our traveling winter trap league. But I think we blew that big time at our fourth shoot. Our individual scores ranged from 13 to 21. Oh well, we’ve still got two shoots to make it up. The following shooters broke 25 straight December 23rd through February 21st :

Saginaw Field and Stream Club At the January membership meeting, Gary Cuttitta, State Match Director IDPA, presented an overview of what IDPA is and talked about what a program of this type can do for our club. It’s been just a year now since some of us went out to the Linwood Bay Sportsmen’s Club to see for ourselves what all the excitement was about. Since that time, we have had 5 club members become certified as IDPA Safety Officers, gotten the club registered as an IDPA sanctioned club and started our Thursday night shoots. With over 100 shooters coming out to shoot, we have a great start. Now, we have 5 more individuals who will be going for their Safety Officer certifications and plans are underway for a great new season.

We will be hosting an event titled “An introduction to IDPA” on April 30th at the club house. This event is open to anyone in the area who wants to learn more about IDPA. This is a non-shooting event, open to the public and offered at no cost. We will be talking about everything from the kind of equipment used, rules, scoring, range safety and protocol, stage design and more. If you or someone you know might like to see what it’s all about mark your calendar and join us. We will start at 7:00 p.m. We have scheduled our first shoot for May 7th. Like last year, we will be setting up at 3:00 p.m. IDPA/Defensive Pistol Practice

IDPA Pistol Program and be ready for shooters by 4:00. We will go until dark every Thursday afternoon through October. With additional safety officers, we can run a couple of stages and our goal this year is to run through the stages more quickly. Again, we will be charging $5 to come out and shoot. We have plans to host our first match in July and will be looking for volunteers and shooters. Watch for more information to come. Contact Carl Hubinger 989 989 642 5487 Joey Lee 989 989 996 0397

Pistol Range Committee update: Looking forward to spring and some warmer weather, the Pistol Range Committee met on 2/10/15 to plan for the upcoming season. Our goals for the 2015 season are improving safety and creating a fun and safe shooting environment for all. The committee discussed the need to raise the berm on the right side of the upper pistol range that backs up to the Cowboy Shooting range. This will be a big undertaking and we need your help! We are looking for dirt, equipment to move and position the dirt, and volunteers. The Pistol Range Committee will meet each month on the 2nd Tuesday at 7:00 at the club house. Our next meeting is scheduled for March 10th, 7:00 p.m. at the club house. We welcome any member who would like to join us to attend. Other plans include working on a monthly “fun shoot” for members and guests to come out and enjoy some fun and challenging target shooting with some competition and prizes thrown in. We have scheduled a “work” day on May 2nd at 8:00 a.m... This will be a time to work on the berm, get all the target stands out, clean up and organize the ranges and have some fun. We will get the grills out and cook up some brats and burgers and in the afternoon, we will have a “fun shoot”. If you are interested in getting involved with the Pistol Range Committee please call or email: David Anderson- [email protected] (989 -928-9821)

The Women’s Shooting Alliance We will also be meeting after our Sunday meetings at It is currently minus 8 degrees. I can’t even think Applebee’s for some informal “gun talk” and food. about heading out to the range to get in some shootThis will be a fun and informal way to get to know ing, but I can think about what we have to look foreveryone and have a little fun. ward to when the temperatures rise come spring. Topics for this year’s meetings are still being finalized Erin and I have been meeting to talk about how we but we plan to kick off the first one with a discussion can make the WSA a fun, empowering and educaon “Going to the range…your first time”. tional experience for all women. We’ve discussed th some changes that I hope you’ll all find exciting and Our March meeting is scheduled for March 15 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and then off to Applebee’s. We want to tell your friends about. hope you will all join us! We are dedicated to creating a supportive and fun environment for all women who want to learn to shoot Joey Lee ([email protected]) 989-996-0397 * in a safe setting. Whether you are brand new to Erin O’Rourke ([email protected]) 989-326shooting or have been shooting for awhile, getting 3792 together with other women in a safe environment is our goal. We hope you’ll join us to learn. We have made some changes. We will continue to meet on the 3rd Sunday of the month from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. We will do all of our shooting on the lower range and we are going back to basics. For those women who are comfortable shooting and just want to work on developing their skills, the area under the canopy will be open to all who have shot with us before and want to do some target practice. We will be working with those who wish to have a more oneon-one experience on the other side of the lower range. The goal is to work with those who need the extra help and to allow those who just want to have some fun with their target practice to go for it.

The Archery Range Hopefully it’s going to warm up soon, as I write this it’s -13 degrees out. We just hosted our 2nd 3D shoot of the year and turnout wasn’t too bad If you have never shot one of these, you owe it to yourself to try it, they are lots of fun. The next indoor 3d is scheduled for the 21st and 22nd of March. Our J.O.A.D. program is going great, and the progress these kids are making is awesome. Our indoor leagues are going good, remember if you want to come out and shoot for fun on any league night you are more than welcome to join in. I am also looking for feedback from our shooters to see if we can make things better or change things up. So if you would like to see something be done different or have some ideas on what we can do to improve our archery program I am all ears.

In addition, we will be available for all new shooters to meet with us prior to our monthly shoot for some basic pistol training. This way, we can provide the extra time to help those just starting out and make sure everyone who joins us on Sunday is prepared and knows the safe gun handling rules. The additional dates and times will be on the Wednesday before the monthly shoot from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and the Saturday the week before the shoot from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. These sessions will need to be arranged for prior to the date by contacting either Erin or me by phone or Rob Komyathy email. For those interested in working on their defensive shooting skills, please join us every Thursday afternoon/evening for the weekly IDPA/Defensive Shooting practice.
