Roster of the old dawgs….

Steve Dona……’The Prez’ Will Tilse…..Vice President Homer Smith…..Secretary-Treasurer Dave Gardner…..Scribe of this rag…. Notice: Next Meeting: November 10th, 2016, Rainbow Café, 112 E. Main St., Auburn, WA, 10:30 am-1 pm..(or thereabouts….)

Presidents message.

U

Hold onto your hat! The building season is upon us!

U

Time to start your next project for the summer flying schedule. Looks like we are going to have a real field to fly in too (Thanks to Nick) I drove by the field last weekend and while it was windy and rainy, it looks really promising. Still need to check it out but this looks like a great place to try out your new (and old) baby. Will Tilse, your Vice President and I have started a “big models” challenge. Since we both like the big models we are planning on building a new C sized pylon ship for next year. You may remember that yours truly offered a good .60 motor to anyone who built a new C sized ship and needed a motor…. The motor is still sitting on my desk at work, waiting for a new home. Come on guys! It doesn’t get any easier than that! Our indoor venue is starting this coming Sunday November 20th! Bring your A-6 for our friendly competition (to the death!). Contest starts at 10:00 with the middle school students showing up at high noon. This year I predict a great turnout as we have (finally) gotten into not one but TWO parent newsletters. I have already received emails from parents wanting to sign up for the event. If you want to come to the indoor venue and don’t have a A-6 to fly, please arrive ready to help with kit building for the kids. With our extended venue this year we will need more projects for the students. Your help with preparing the kits will be needed and appreciated. Lots going on! This is going to be an exciting and busy “building season”! See you all over the Rainbow.

SAM 8 Minutes for October 13th, 2016

U

Minutes of the SAM 8 Meeting for October 13, 2016 The meeting was brought to order by The Prez, Steve Dona, back fresh from a vacation at 12:15 PM with 18 members present The weather reports for the WMC contest date were not good and probably kept a good number at home. The weather turned out to be a bit windy on Saturday. Steve tried to fly an A/2 glider but the wing broke from too much wind. Sunday began with a bit of rain but it was gone by 10:00. Several models collided with power lines but sustained little damage. Will was very happy to beat Steve in OT fuselage. Not a common thing to happen. SAM 8 sponsors three events at the WMC meets. The Old Timer Trophy was won by Greg Davis (a Canadian and frequent contestant) with the highest accumulated score. In case you have not heard, Nick found a new field for us to fly in. Read the details elsewhere in the newsletter. Please be aware of the rules and follow them! A test of the field by the group will be scheduled, weather permitting. Stay tuned! Hopefully we can schedule a big fun fly sometime in the spring of 2017. The first Finn Hill event was cancelled due to a conflicting schedule at the school. Steve hopes we can get back on track. The model to be used for this winter’s events is a laser cut kit model. Chuck Bower moved that we buy an extra 20 kits to insure a proper supply and to help insure the production continues. The motion was seconded and passed. For Show-and-Tell, Chuck brought an E-20 version of the Viking free flight model. Chuck said the model was fun to build but he had not had a chance to fly it yet. There was an auction of material mostly brought by Chuck Bower and David Higgins.

Steve closed meeting after the auction at 1:37 PM……………………..Homer Smith…. ACTIVITIES:

Information from David Higgins, re indoor modeling supplies:

U

Parents of students who participate in the Finn Hill Middle School Build and Fly sessions frequently ask us where they can buy rubber powered model airplane kits and associated paraphernalia such as rubber winders and the strip rubber for making rubber motors. Unfortunately, most of the local hobby shops do not carry much in the way of free flight model airplane kits and associated supplies. SAM 8 buys many of the free flight supplies for the Finn Hill Build and Fly sessions from mail order only businesses. The Mountain Lion kit, which the Finn Hill students built last spring, is available from Laser Cut Planes (www.lasercutplanes.com). They also offer several other indoor kits, some of which are sturdy enough to fly outdoors during calm conditions, provided the tissue paper covering is sprayed with a couple of light coats of clear Krylon paint to protect it from moisture. All of the Laser Cut Plane kits are obviously laser cut and are designed to eliminate cutting and sanding balsa wood parts. All parts self locate with slots and tabs, so building plans are not needed. Laser Cut Planes also sells the yellow 15 to 1 rubber winder. BMJR Models (www.bmjrmodels.com) is another good source for laser cut balsa wood model airplane kits. They have a large selection of simple rubber powered and electric motor powered free flight models airplane kits and some accessories. They also sell more advanced free flight and radio controlled kits for some of the classic model airplanes from the '30s, '40s and '50s. Volare Products ( www.volareproducts.com ) is one of the best sources for rubber powered model airplanes and accessories. They sell everything from beginner to advanced laser cut balsa model airplane kits as well as hard to find Japanese tissue, a large assortment of plastic props and balsa wood props, propeller bearings, various sizes and styles of landing gear wheels, and those yellow rubber winders. They also sell the FAI Super Sport strip rubber in various widths in one pound, half pound and quarter pound packages. HU

Other flying site notes:

U

Several folks were going to check out the Torres' Farm near Elma/Satsop, but the weather was not cooperative this last weekend. Bob Stalick from WMC was going to venture a trip up to check it out, but again, the weather..... Steve Dona drove by the site and investigated it from the perimeter. With all the wet, the field was almost too soggy to walk on, let alone use a chase bike. Steve was not on a flying outing, just in the area, generally, so was not prepared to fly at that time. Perhaps we'll get some break from the rain (...thanks, October!) a bit later this month.....November is predicting a bit warmer......drier??.....with the elections out of the way, maybe a time frame will open, not in conflict with the indoor schedule. Stay tuned......any opportunity will be noted on the SAM 8 site, or a general mailing.....

Editor's notes;

U

Editor's planning schedule: Two weeks before meeting: Great ideas for newsletter.....make notes....plenty of time. 10 days before meeting: Gather notes....check for event activities and schedules...think about it. One week before meeting: Check with Prez and Sec'y for notes and columns.....wait for input. 5 days before meeting: Put together draft with notes and pics. Try to get all input from others. 4 days before meeting: Juggle space and spacing, along with picture formatting....still time... 3 days before meeting: Picture formatting weird.....juggle, locate....and relocate....clock is running. 2 days before meeting: Why doesn't everything fit? more pagination work. Day before meeting: What the heck......fill all the spaces and get the d&@#*m thing out! (and, if the ads bug you too much, let me know....or send something for your own ads....!) Some other notices of informal gatherings of ‘Antique Modelers’:

U

There’s a group, including many SAM 8 members, who meet for lunch every Thursday (except SAM 8 meeting days) at the Pancake Chef, 15215 Military Road South, SeaTac, just a bit north of the SeaTac airport. In addition, the informal group, NxNw (North by Northwest), also comprised of some SAM 8 members from further nawth, meet at the Royal Casino, 13010 WA-99, Everett, WA 98204 at 10 am, each 4th Wednesday, for brunch/breakfast/lunch (the menu works for all!). Note the address doesn’t work on all GPS’s, but will put you in the area, near 128th St. SAM 8 WEBSITE REPORT: No website report this month because I didn't bug Roger for the info!
