Dear friends of St. David’s Center, As we pause to reflect on this past year, we feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment with the milestones we’ve reached. From the children and families whose lives we touch every day, to our staff working tirelessly for the best outcomes, to schools and childcare centers who partner with us so effectively, to those who support our work so generously, you are the community that has made these achievements possible. Guided by a clear vision and strategic plan, the 2013-2014 fiscal year was one of our most ambitious to date. In the pages that follow, you’ll see evidence of the extent to which we stretched ourselves to innovate, to provide exceptional service at every turn, to reach the underserved in new and critically important ways and to build our capacity to serve the community for years to come. It is with great pride that we share these successes. But even more importantly, we want to extend our gratitude to each of you for supporting St. David’s Center and thereby making a tremendous difference in the lives of more than 2,400 children and families this past year. Your belief in our work and its value in the lives of those we serve continues to inspire us and keep us on the path to building a strong, vibrant community in which every member fully contributes to its success. Sincerely,

Lars Erdahl, Board Chair

Meeting Milestones: Delivering on our promises to the community.

2013-2014 SUCCESSES & ACCOMPLISHMENTS As a result of your generous support, St. David’s Center: Served 2,443 children and their families, 9 percent more than last year. Much of the increase was in critically needed early intervention services for children with developmental needs. Launched two new programs, meeting strategic goals: Community-Based Autism Day Treatment in the Somali community opened in April, thanks to a multi-year grant from the Medica Foundation. School-Linked Mental Health program put St. David’s Center professionals in seven schools in Osseo and Hopkins School Districts, with five-year support from the Minnesota Department of Human Services. Secured new grants to strengthen new initiatives in early childhood education and wellness. Opus Foundation funding supports a pilot project integrating special education expertise in our early childhood classrooms. Grants from The Cargill Foundation and the Minnesota Department of Human Services improve client wellness for Therapeutic Recreation, Foster Care, Family Place and Supportive Living Services clients. Completed our inaugural year of fully integrating a Reggio-Emilia-inspired approach into our Early Childhood Education program.

Evaluated 198 children using our innovative Multi-Disciplinary Assessment Team during the first two years of implementing the program, surpassing our goal. Launched a new partnership with the Mother-Baby Day Hospital and Hennepin County Medical Center’s Obstetrics and Pediatric Clinics to serve mothers with a history of depression. Met renovation and expansion capital fundraising milestones, moving us closer to shovels in the ground. Campaign funds raised and pledged increased from $4.2 million to $11.2 million last year, reaching 90 percent of our goal. Peter J. King Family Foundation capstone grant awarded $2.25 million, the largest grant ever received by St. David’s Center. 45 members of the Minnesota Legislature toured our facility for a first-hand look at our plans for growth. State bond funding secured $3.75 million for the building project. Awards & Accreditations Named a 2014 Top 100 Workplace by the Star Tribune. Recognized as a Top 16 High-Impact Nonprofit in Minnesota for our work in helping children with mental health challenges by Minnesota Philanthropy Partners and Philanthropedia. Awarded Best Preschool by Lake Minnetonka Magazine for the third consecutive year.

Moving Forward: Exceptional practice earns a mother’s trust.

Mary Etta has a contagious smile that brightens any room. “Mary’s always smiling but she’s also always counting on somebody,” her mother Angela said. “She doesn’t walk, she doesn’t talk or anything like that.” Born prematurely at just 1 lb. 5 oz., Mary Etta has had dozens of surgeries to replace her hips, repair her spine, and combat numerous bouts of pneumonia and recurring seizures. At times, Angela had in-home help taking care of Mary Etta, but her confidence was repeatedly shaken by incompetent and irresponsible nurses. For years, that caused her to believe she would forever be her daughter’s only advocate—until she grew to trust the staff of St. David’s Center’s Adventure Program. Even though one of the program’s goals is to serve as a source of respite for parents of children with special needs, Angela was beside Mary Etta every minute during the first few weeks of her participation in the therapeutic recreation program. “I was so nervous in the beginning,” Angela said. “I’ve been with Mary her whole life, I know her ups and downs, and I had to express it to the staff, because she can’t tell you herself.”

In the spring, Mary Etta graduated from North High School in Minneapolis. Alongside her were not only Angela and her older brother and sister, but three Adventure staff members as well. “At St. David’s Center, you guys love her. And she knows that,” Angela said. “Now I know that she’s having a good time there; that she’s getting excited for something and making friends and getting out into the community.” Mary Etta now attends Adventure solo, with just minor checkins from her mom. “They don’t act annoyed or upset when I’m concerned about my child. They listen to what I have to say in a caring, patient and welcoming way.” Like every participant, Mary Etta takes home a check-in chart each day detailing what she participated in, from basketball to canoeing, as well as a log of any behavior or medical concerns. “When I talk to her about her day there,” Angela said, “you can see her smile light up and you can see that she’s happy, so that’s what makes me happy.”

“As long as there’s a St. David’s Center Adventure program, she’s going to go to St. David’s Center’s Adventure program.” -Angela

Within a few weeks, however, Angela began noticing how staff members interacted with her daughter. “I realized I was in the way a little bit,” Angela said. “It’s so amazing from where I started to how relaxed I can be now, three years later.”

Moving Forward: Cultural innovation translates autism for an immigrant community.

Imagine being a new immigrant parent, facing life in a new place, learning a new language, and discovering your child has a diagnosis that can’t even be named in your own language. In Somali, there is no word for autism. “Somali parents think if your child is not talking, maybe they’ll start talking later,” said Amina Hassan, mental health practitioner working in St. David’s Center’s new Community-Based Autism Day Treatment (ADT) Program in northeast Minneapolis. Modeled after the successful ADT program on our Minnetonka campus, Somali children ages two through six attend therapeutic preschool in the morning, and families are supported by weekly home visits. But there is one big difference: half of the staff are Somali women. Autism rates in children have grown across every population, but studies show a staggering one in 32 Somali children in Minneapolis schools are on the spectrum, and many show higher degrees of disability. St. David’s Center‘s multicultural treatment team—mental health practitioners, paraprofessionals, speech and occupational therapists—work side-by-side with Somali children who have been diagnosed with autism and provide support to their families. “I go into their homes and I take off my shoes, chit chat, have tea and they pour their heart out to me,” mental health practitioner Izhar Mohamed said. “I listen to their struggles. I can say, ‘I will show you and we will learn together how to take your child to the park. You don’t have to be embarrassed.’”

“We tell parents, ‘Everything in the program is designed just for you. You can feel safe,’” Amina said. She said most people invite them in and listen, and that their efforts have resulted in multiple inquiries. Amina makes initial calls to families who express interest, and then visits their homes for what is called “intake and assessment” in the field. “When I go to the houses, I say I am collecting information to see what we can do for your child and how you can access resources,” Amina said. “I am translating more than words. I am translating complicated ideas like mental health and what this program means for their child without cutting the meaning out. I tell families they are coming to a place where they won’t get lost.” Embedded in this translation of words and meaning is the transmission of a sense of trust and hope which is clearly felt by Somali parents.

“We are the bridge to help parents trust and feel safe. Every day I learn something new from a parent and the staff, and I am part of the start for our community.” - Izhar

Passionate about how St. David’s Center’s program can help their community, Amina and Izhar have been knocking on doors in the Cedar-Riverside community to distribute informational flyers about the autism program. Pictured: Staff members Amina, Ismaham and Izhar.

Moving Forward: Child-centered early education celebrates curiosity.

Six-year-old Bergen has always been curious and inventive. “He’d really choose to do anything with Legos and blocks and trucks. He loves to build and create, and figure out how stuff works,” his parents Rich and Holly said.

“Once Bergen’s teacher was debating if she was hungry and whether to eat a snack with the class. She was moving her arms up and down like a scale and Bergen asked what she was weighing. Then he sat down at the table and said to the other boys, ‘What do you guys think if your tummy says one thing and your head says another? Who do you listen to?’ So they went around the table, each sharing their ideas, which I really thought was an intellectual and analyzing discussion,” Holly said.

At St. David’s Center, Bergen’s inquisitiveness has been encouraged in all aspects of his learning. While his early childhood teachers supported Bergen’s natural interests in class, they also stretched him to delve into the interests of his peers.

Bergen’s teacher went on to photograph and document the scene, validating the importance of each child’s idea and creating a book to send home—a common Reggio-inspired practice.

“The creative environment in St. David’s Center classrooms is welcoming because you see so many different ways things are done, and done well, by different kids,” his father Rich said. “The teachers completely respect the kids and their ideas, which really builds their self-worth—so much so that Bergen doesn’t even think of them as teachers, but rather as guides.” For the past three years, St. David’s Center has been on the journey to become a Reggio-Emilia-inspired preschool. In following that education philosophy, which was first developed in Italy, teachers support and value student ideas by asking questions, encouraging hypotheses and experimenting. “Bergen hit all his developmental milestones but he went about it in a whole different way,” his mother Holly said. “He didn’t memorize one to 10 until he realized that you use those numbers to add and subtract so it must be important to know them and how they interrelate. His development didn’t always follow the expected pattern, but we could see that he understood the concepts.” Reggio-inspired education places importance on the process each individual child takes in order to gain understanding. The philosophy stresses that children learn best in a rich environment that nurtures and supports their curiosity and ideas.

Pictured: Bergen, Signe, Holly, Rich and staff member Britte.

“We still pull out the books as a family to read together,” Holly said. “Bergen gets excited to identify which of his classmates drew which picture or did which piece of writing.” Although Bergen has been making his transition to kindergarten this fall, the family’s connection to St. David’s Center will continue to stay strong as his younger sister, Signe, is just getting started in preschool. A more traditional learner in her parents’ eyes, they hope the Early Childhood Education Program will develop her creativity and stretch her to her full potential.

“We hope the foundation he developed will give him confidence in the future to follow his heart, continue to be curious and truly enjoy learning.” - Holly and Rich 9

What’s Next: A clear vision to build our children’s future. In spring 2015, once fundraising goals are met, the Building Our Children’s Future renovation and expansion project begins. The Minnetonka Campus footprint will increase by nearly 6,500 square feet. Eleven classrooms will grow by up to 300 square feet, creating the best early learning environments. 94 percent more children will receive critical services in our expanded mental health and pediatric therapy clinics. Twice as many preschool children with autism will thrive in innovative day treatment suites. More than 1,000 children will have developmental needs identified in stateof-the-art assessment spaces. Our 2.5 acre School Forest’s woodland and wetland areas will be integrated into our outdoor play area, engaging the natural features of our unique property.
