2012 Foundation Report 1
Report of the Acting Executive Director The Foundation made an important contribution to Trinity College in 2012. Members of the Executive Committee are thanked sincerely for their energy and wisdom as volunteers and their generosity as donors. The support from the Foundation for the major fundraising personnel and programs was critical to the philanthropic income attained, and to the planning and preparation for significant fundraising initiatives in the next few years. Donations to the College in 2012 amounted to $2.19 million. Distributions and allocations from Foundation funds for fundraising activities, for scholarships and teaching, and for improved facilities, amounting to $716,000 made a remarkable difference to the lives of students and staff. The transformative nature of this support is inestimable.
eloquently on the achievements and ambitions of the College, with particular emphasis on plans to build significantly the corpus of funds held in endowment to provide scholarships for students in all parts of Trinity. Associate Director, Alumni Relations, Ms Nicole Crook, deserves great praise for the planning and management of such a successful College celebration.
Highlights for the year included the remarkable transformation of the Dining Hall and the development of contemporary, casual dining spaces on the northern face of the traditional Hall, progress in landscaping and beautifying the campus in the north-eastern precinct of the main campus, and commencement of works to refurbish all student accommodation in the Memorial Building (Jeopardy).
Other occasions were also well attended. The annual Fleur-de-Lys Drinks Under the Oak, the Seniors’ Lunch, city breakfasts, various Warden’s Circle events and a Leeper Society afternoon at Duneira at Mount Macedon, were popular with alumni and friends. They were important opportunities for continuing engagement with the College, and the support shown was affirming for Trinity staff and those in governance roles. The Warden and Ms Crook visited Singapore and Kuala Lumpur in November and were welcomed warmly by alumni and friends of the College.
There was a different pattern to the program of reunions and special events in 2012. It was decided that the 140th Anniversary Celebration Dinner would be the principal focus for the year and that regular decade reunions would be suspended as a result. The dinner was a triumph. Almost 600 guests enjoyed a night of fine food and wine, sublime music and splendid company. The Warden, Professor Andrew McGowan, spoke
2 2012 Foundation Report
In many ways 2012 was a year of change, particularly in leadership roles. The occasion of the Annual General Meeting marked the retirement of the Chairman, Dr Graeme Blackman OAM, after nine years of distinguished service.
Dr Blackman made an outstanding contribution as Chairman of the Executive Committee, Chair of the Campaign Committee in the life of the remarkably successful Campaign for Trinity, and as a member of the Trinity Board. His support of students in need, in which he was joined by his wife and loyal Trinity supporter, Paulene Blackman, is acknowledged with gratitude. Distributions and allocations from Foundation funds made a remarkable difference to the lives of students and staff. The transformative nature of this support is inestimable.
Mr Charles Sitch succeeded Dr Blackman as Chairman. Mr Sitch brought senior corporate and commercial experience to the role, along with a record of distinguished service as a volunteer in not-for-profit groups. An alumnus of the College, his energy, wisdom and vision have already been evident and appreciated sincerely in the work of the Executive Committee of the Foundation, and the Trinity Board.
The Foundation also acknowledges the special contribution made by Ms Miranda Milne, who resigned after serving on the Executive Committee of the Foundation for 14 years. Ms Milne is one of the longest serving volunteers of the College in recent times and will be remembered particularly for her commercial experience and insights, including the effective and responsible management of endowments and funds held in trust, and her deep affection for the College. 2012 also saw the resignation of the
Executive Director of the Foundation, and Director of Advancement, Dr Alan Watkinson. In his five years at Trinity, Dr Watkinson led the development of a number of fundraising initiatives and under his guidance, important and reliable annual philanthropic income was received. He also established connections and professional friendships with many members of the Trinity community, and was an elegant and informed advocate at all times. He moved to a similar position with the Melbourne Business School with the sincere thanks of the Foundation for a job well done.
The Foundation thanks all the Advancement staff for their excellent achievements in 2012, particularly given the changes in personnel and leadership through the year. Upon the departure of Dr Watkinson, I was delighted to serve as acting Director of Advancement until December, when Mr Scott Charles commenced in the role. Mr Charles will bring to the position valuable commercial experience and strong Trinity links as a former student and tutor.
Mr Campbell Bairstow

‘Without financial assistance I would not have been able to start university this year and wouldn’t have been a part of all these inspiring, interesting and incredible experiences.’ Evangeline Shaw (2nd year Biomedicine), Merlyn Myer Scholarship
Message from the Chairman I am delighted to have been asked to chair the Trinity College Foundation. The College is an extraordinary institution. Those of us who are part of it – students, staff, alumni, parents and countless supporters – are so greatly enriched by our association. We should be justifiably proud of our 140 year history and all that has been achieved. Equally it is with enormous excitement that we look forward to the future developments of the College and the supporting role the Foundation will play. In his remarks, Mr Campbell Bairstow expressed the College’s appreciation for the enormous contribution made by Dr Graeme Blackman, Ms Miranda Milne and Dr Alan Watkinson. I would like to add my thanks. Graeme, Miranda and Alan’s leadership of the Foundation over many years sets a benchmark we will continue to aspire to. I know from personal observation the huge time commitment and effort they made. We are very grateful to them. I would like to thank all the current members of the Executive Committee of the Foundation: Ms Kathleen Bailey-Lord, Ms Robin Campbell, Mr Bill Cowan, Mr Jono Gourlay, Mr Mark Leslie, the Warden of Trinity College, Professor Andrew McGowan, Mr Michael Munckton, Mr Gary Norman (Honorary Treasurer),
and Mr Ian Solomon. Every member of the Committee has an absolute passion for the College. Throughout 2012 their support for the College’s fundraising efforts has been exemplary. I would also like to thank the Advancement team for its tireless dedication in 2012: Ms Kay Attali, Ms Nicole Crook, the Right Revd James Grant AM, Ms Essie Marendy, Ms Toni Roberts and Ms Kirstie Robertson. For eight months last year, Mr Campbell Bairstow assumed the role of Acting Executive Director of the Foundation. This was in addition to Campbell assuming the role of Acting Warden during Professor Andrew McGowan’s sabbatical as well as his responsibilities as Dean of the College. Despite the pressure of holding three
offices, Campbell dedicated a huge amount of time and energy to fundraising. He injected plenty of fresh thinking, challenged us to raise aspirations and provided invaluable counsel and advice. Finally I would like to welcome Mr Scott Charles, our new Director of Advancement. In a way Scott needs no introduction. He has been very involved with the College for 25 years. As a resident he was Senior Student in 1989; since then he has been a very active alumnus. I am yet to meet any person with more friends among all generations of our Trinity community. I have no doubt Scott, with his humour, energy, intelligence and commercial acumen, will be an incredibly successful leader. We are so lucky he accepted our invitation to take on this role.
Mr Charles Sitch
2012 Foundation Report 5
Funds’ Performance The Foundation raised $1.6 million in donations in 2012 and booked Investment Income of $1.1 million. These donations, unless they were for a specific activity being undertaken by the College in the current year, are invested across segments of the investment market based on weightings determined in conjunction with the Foundation (and the College’s) investment advisors, Jana Investment Advisers Pty Ltd (JANA). The funds are invested in Australian and international equities, debt and liquid securities. The Foundation does not invest directly in securities but utilises recommended fund managers specialising in the various market segments. The weightings of our investments into the various segments determine a benchmark portfolio return, which measures the results from investments in sectors against the expected performance. The overall objective is to maintain the corpus of the Foundation funds in real terms so that inflation does not diminish the purchasing power of the endowed funds over time. To achieve this, and to provide for at least a 4% draw from the corpus to be utilised by the College each year, we also measure our performance against the benchmark of CPI plus 5%. The 2012 Foundation’s investments performance (refer table right) was prepared based on reports provided by JANA and show a positive performance
6 2012 Foundation Report
of 16% in 2012. This compares favourably to the performance of the benchmark portfolio of 15.6%. With respect to the performance objective of CPI plus 5% over rolling five-year periods, the Foundation performance exceeded the benchmark portfolio however fell short of the overall performance objective.
in Business program, $86,000; the BA Extended program, $110,000; the Dining Hall project and general buildings and grounds works, $681,000; Warden’s discretionary fund for student financial aid support, $98,000; the Theological School fund, $63,000; and Theological School studentships and lectureships, $25,000.
The performance of the Foundation’s investments, as with the market generally, remains volatile with continuing issues of the so-called US fiscal cliff, ongoing sovereign debt issues in Europe, market caution and uncertainty and low economic growth. However, there was an improvement in the investment returns in 2012 with three quarters delivering positive returns, while the second quarter resulted in a negative return.
The Finance and Investment Management Committees continue to actively monitor the funds performance together with JANA in order to maintain the target of a rolling five-year performance of CPI plus 5%. The Committee resolved to sell down some of its investments in Aberdeen to reduce its weighting in cash, and Warakirri due to a relatively poor performance over the last couple of years. Proceeds from the sale of Aberdeen were invested in Bentham Syndicated Loan Fund, while proceeds from Warakirri were invested in Vanguard International Shares Index Fund. Late in 2012, the Foundation invested in Apostle Loomis Sayles, a second fund manager focused on debt. In addition, Hastings Yield Fund continued to return capital to the Foundation as various investments under the Fund matured.
The Foundation provided the needed funding in 2012 for the College’s requirements both from an operational and capital program perspective. Disbursements to Trinity College in 2012 totalled $2.4 million and included: scholarships, $772,000; funding campaign costs, $257,000; the Gourlay Visiting Professor of Ethics Performance to 31 December 2012 Trinity College Foundation Benchmark Portfolio Performance Objective

Proceeds from these repayments were invested in Aberdeen. As reported previously, the Trinity College Board resolved to carry the shortfall between the market value and cost in an Available for Sale Investment Revaluation Reserve in the balance sheet rather than take a charge to the profit and loss at that time. The Board took the position that the investments are a long-term asset of the Foundation and therefore any movement should be reflected in the balance sheet rather than the profit and loss until sold. As a consequence, when the units in Warakirri were sold in 2012, a loss on sale of $177,000 was realised. This is consistent with the Foundation’s (and College’s) policy and consistent with
Australian Accounting Standard AASB 139 Financial Instruments: Recognition and Measurement. With the strong investment performance in 2012, the shortfall in the value of the investments in the balance sheet as at December 2011 was recovered. As stated above, the Investment Management Committee, Finance Committee and the Board continue to
monitor the funds’ performance and to work closely with JANA on charting a course that endeavours to maintain the real value of endowments and still meets the needs of Trinity College.
