OPPORTUNITY

Who’s ready for a road trip? Remember the days when the family piled in the car for a cross country driving vacation? The Portland Community College Foundation is taking you on a ride across Portland and our region where you’ll stop along the way to meet the supporters who make opportunity happen for thousands of students every year. These donors are driven and committed to send first generation, low-income students to college and all those seeking career training, allowing them to live out their dreams. For many students, this begins the journey of a lifetime. The PCC Foundation believes the key to student success is giving not only financial support but coaching and guidance for students to finish their degree or certificate. We believe that all students in our region should have access to an excellent education and the support needed to succeed. Founded in 1982, the Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding PCC priorities. To achieve its mission of enriching lives and strengthening communities through the College, the Foundation mobilizes donors to support scholarships, curriculum and faculty and staff development.

THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS

Dear PCC Friends, It’s an exciting time for Portland Community College — one filled with anticipation as together, we envision the future. The PCC Foundation is delighted to welcome our new college president, Dr. Jeremy Brown. A former physics instructor, Dr. Brown knows the classroom and the needs of faculty and students. He is an experienced institutional leader, serving as president and provost at both two and four-year degree-granting institutions. He’s thrilled that PCC demonstrates every day what he champions: innovative workforce training and career technical programs; partnerships that engage high school students with a desire for college; access to higher education for those who thought college was not possible; a diverse student body reflective of our community; and faculty and staff committed to academic excellence and student success. Thanks to you, our donors, the PCC Foundation reached new heights in fundraising last year, providing $1.6 million in scholarships and program support, the highest amount ever. At the same time, there remains a wide gap between students’ needs and available funding; the PCC Foundation is able to support only 40% of students who apply for scholarships, with demand continuing to grow. The PCC Foundation is not only committed to providing scholarships to get students into college; we are also funding critical student supports that ensure they stay in college and finish their degrees. The PCC Foundation’s growth in fundraising would not have been possible without the vision and dedication of recently retired PCC president, Dr. Preston Pulliams. Dr. Pulliams’ passion for helping PCC students succeed led

to programs like Jefferson Middle College and PCC Future Connect, which you can read more about in this report. In his last year, Dr. Pulliams spearheaded the Campaign for Opportunity to raise one million dollars to support first generation, low-income students at PCC. One year after he announced this ambitious goal, he and the PCC Foundation have met it. As we open the academic year under Dr. Brown’s energetic leadership, the College looks forward to a new challenge — envisioning how we can best serve our students and the community as a 21st century college via strategic planning. This will guide the PCC Foundation’s fundraising priorities and provide a roadmap to ensure access, success and quality in all that the College does. Many thanks to you, our donors, for your belief in PCC and for putting students on the road to opportunity. Your heartfelt commitments make a tremendous difference in the lives of our students, their families, and our communities. Warmly,

Chris Neilsen PCC Foundation President 2012–13

Hoffman Construction Corporation wasted no time getting to know PCC and its students. A longtime supporter of the PCC Foundation Golf Invitational, the construction giant has helped fund scholarships for students in the building trades. This year the company stepped up its game in a big way by making a $50,000 donation for the Campaign for Opportunity. Their gift will allow students the chance to enroll in college, a dream that many never thought a reality. “Scholarships are really a symbol of hope and if you are in the construction industry you have to be hopeful about the future. This fits well with our DNA. We see the scholarship program as an ongoing commitment to

this city’s future and that appeals to us,” said Bart Eberwein, Hoffman’s executive vice president. “PCC is a great place for someone who is exploring the construction industry and any career path. We believe we’re helping students who may become tomorrow’s business owners and leaders.” Hoffman’s connection to PCC comes in multiple forms, the most visible is the ongoing construction project at the Cascade Campus where crews are erecting two new buildings and an underground parking garage to open in 2014. Hoffman’s commitment to the neighborhood runs deep as it works with residents to minimize inconveniences. “This is an important area, a jewel in the crown,” said Eberwein. “The fact that PCC trusted Hoffman to partner on this project is very gratifying.”

“We wanted to show support for PCC and the critical role it plays in the health and vitality of the greater Portland area,” said Bart Eberwein.

Record-breaking Gala crowd paves road for student success

With the hits of Motown providing the soundtrack to the evening, more than 600 community members gathered at the Portland Marriott Hotel in May to pledge their financial support for PCC student scholarships and success initiatives while toasting Dr. Preston Pulliams as he retired after nine years as president. Thanks to the outstanding generosity of guests and sponsors, the second annual Evening for Opportunity was a tremendous success as more than $345,000 was raised on behalf of deserving students seeking to achieve their dreams through the power of a PCC education.

Golf Invitational shows no signs of slowing down Each fall the ever-popular PCC Foundation Golf Invitational brings together over two hundred golf enthusiasts to play 18 holes with friends and colleagues at Heron Lakes Golf Course while raising money for future home builders, commercial developers and architects. The annual golf tournament is a big draw for professionals from construction and building industries and the money raised goes toward student scholarships in Building Construction Technology. The 2013 golf invitational marked the tournament’s 10th year and early reports show the event netted $90,000. The Golf Invitational serves as the Foundation’s longest running special event and helped jumpstart other events, such as the successful and popular Annual Gala. Over the last decade, the Invitational has raised nearly $1.1 million to advance PCC’s mission and provide scholarships to many students thanks to the dedication and support from loyal individuals and companies. During that time more than 1,500 golfers have participated in the annual outing.

Portland Community College graduate travels the country to save lives Moving to Portland in 1997 was a major turning point for Ben Jones. He had just left Idaho where poor grades and behavioral problems kept him from graduating high school. Within a few weeks of arriving in Oregon, he enrolled at PCC to finish classes needed for that high school diploma. “What I liked about PCC is that it draws people who have a life and want to be in school to learn. I really liked the small classes and the instructors were great,” he recalled. “Going to PCC was one of the best decisions I ever made.”

A PCC science class proved to be a catalyst that turned one high school dropout into an emergency room doctor The anatomy and physiology class he took at PCC was indeed a life changer. “After taking that class I never doubted what I wanted to do with my life. I knew then that I wanted to study the human body and how it works and I wanted to become a doctor,” he said. Jones finished his schooling at PCC in 1998 and transferred to Willamette University where he graduated with a biology degree. He attended medical school at Oregon Health & Science University, serving as president of the senior class before graduating in 2012.

“In medical school I’d go to the PCC library and study. I felt comfortable and it brought me back to my roots,” said Jones, a 2013 PCC Diamond Alum, and now a second-year resident in emergency medicine at East Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

FINANCIAL REPORT

PCC Foundation Financial Outlook 2012–13 PCC Foundation’s total support and revenues in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2013 (FY 2013) was almost $3.5 million. This included cash contributions, in-kind support, and investment activities. The Foundation raised $2.1 million in cash contributions during the year, while investment activities showed returns of over $566,000. PCC Foundation’s total expenses for FY 2013 included scholarships and programs, along with supporting services and investment fees. Foundation revenues supported nearly $1.6 million in PCC scholarships and program support–a 13% increase from last year. Our growth was due to increased giving for scholarships; expanded support for STEM initiatives, such as the PCC FIRST Summer Robotics Program; and funding for a new cohort of 200 students in the PCC Future Connect Scholarship Program. The Foundation fully expects to continue its growth trajectory to fulfill our vision that all students in our region have access to an excellent education at PCC and the support needed to succeed, regardless of their ability to pay. During FY 2013, PCC Foundation’s net assets grew by more than $945,000 to over $10.4 million. Further, the Foundation’s endowment and affiliated net accumulated earnings accounts grew by over 11% during the year to over $5.5 million. In the last five years the Foundation’s net assets and endowed funds have doubled. Our heartfelt thanks goes out to you, our generous donors. Together, we are creating opportunity for PCC students to succeed.
