Instead of going on and on myself about how important financial help is to so many students, I thought I’d share the words of a scholarship recipient who graduated in June. Dear TCC Foundation, I had an incredible last quarter at TCC, that is for sure! The commencement speaker made me think of scholarship donors and the joy of giving in general. As much as I try to view the world from the perspective of others I did not realize the extent of that joy until recently. I am so grateful for the incredible gift of a scholarship this year. I may have been able to achieve great things without it, but I have been able to do much more with it. That scholarship means more to me than simply paying for my schooling, it has been a show of confidence in me. You don’t know much about my personal life, but for all of my adult life (and much of the time before that) I have been essentially alone in my endeavors. It means a great deal to me to have the support of someone who doesn’t even know me. It has strengthened my own resolve and encouraged me in aiming higher than I would have before. To that end, I aimed high and applied to several prestigious schools. In the end, though, my plan is to go to UW in the fall. They have an excellent mechanical engineering program. I have a scholarship, thanks to my nomination to the All Washington Academic Team, where I also received my recognition from the governor; which was quite unexpected, I might add. I intend to focus my career goals on solar energy, with long-term goals of working for SolarCity after my graduation. I will start my own research projects in this field as soon as possible. If all goes well I may even stay and get my master’s degree, depending on where I am at that point in my life. I am confident now that the world is my oyster. I will be making waves in the future. I am quite sure you will be hearing more about me as my career progresses. I will always remember the impact my scholarship has had on me. I have learned valuable lessons not only in the gift, but in the meaning behind it. I can’t express enough how thankful I am.
