INTRODUCTION

History The world’s first manufacturer of filter paper The Swedish chemist J.J. Berzelius (1779 – 1848) is regarded as the inventor of the first real filter paper. He was the first in using pure wet-laid all-rag paper for the retention of precipitates in chemical analysis. At Berzelius‘ suggestion, the development and manufacture of such paper was begun around 1815 at J. H. Munktell’s paper mill at Grycksbo. Similar production was later begun in England and Germany, but the ”Swedish Filter Paper“ retained its leading position, and its characteristics, particularly its purity, set the standard for analytical filter papers. The paper which was hand-made at the time of Berzelius, is still made at the same paper mill today, but now with the aid of modern paper-making technology. Munktell filter papers with Berzelius picture – your assurance of original quality!

Munktell Filter Papers were long delivered in hand-made birchbark packages.

INTRODUCTION

Quality Management System – ISO 9001:2000

All our efforts are focused onto the one goal:

To win the confidence of the customers in the quality of our products and services We are doing our utmost to realise this ambition and will do all that is necessary to have products and services meet even the highest expectations. At the end of the day, our business depends on your success. Quality control already begins during development. At this stage already, our chemists and technicians maintain close contact with our customers in order to tailor the right product for a given application. Raw materials are the basis for a consistent paper quality. This is why stringent quality checks are carried out for incoming goods. During production, consistency and degree of beating are watched very closely. Automatic measuring devices during production in the course of an in-line production control in the paper machine register the slightest deviation. A continuous process control in the laboratory located at the paper machine provides a direct flow of information to the staff operating the machine. Quality measures on the production site are complemented by checks carried out in the quality department. Munktell’s sophisticated test rigs correspond to the standard of modern technology. Regular revision of measuring means guarantees their function and precision. The whole staff has been trained to know and implement the conditions and standards of quality control so that the next conversion step is only carried out when the respective demands have been met. We apply customerorientated quality assurance also to the converting sections of our plant creating thus a basis for a successful collaboration for many years to come.

The filters with a pleated, hydrophobic mechanical filter membrane give the highest possible protection against contamination of the breathing system. Gard has such a mechanical membrane and is therefore very suitable. Bacstop and Bacstop Mini have an electrostatic filter membrane with a slightly lower filtration efficiency. Bacstop and Bacstop Mini will give sufficient protection during treatments that have low risks for contamination. The Gard models have several combinations of ISO connectors. The filters are available with a capnograph port.

Munktell air filter media The MUNKTELL filter media concept is to manufacture media in all efficiency ranges of interest to the cleanroom industry – efficiencies from 99.95 % to 99.9999 % for 0.12 µm particle size. Consequently, to fulfil the requirements beyond the present standards and are appropriate filter media for cleanroom applications. These products are then converted by the customers into a variety of shapes and configurations to suit a multitude of industrial, medical, electronical and personal protection applications. MUNKTELL air filter media give you greater freedom

in filter design and opens markets where you could not previously participate. They are produced on a paper machine especially designed for the processing of micro-glass fibres. Only high purity borosilicate glass fibres are employed, in thicknesses rangeing from 0.2 to 2.0 µm, depending on the required level of efficiency.

State of the art test rigs document the quality MUNKTELL maintains an extensive laboratory facility where inline and quality tests are conducted on an ongoing basis in order to maintain quality and consistency. Our test facilities give you the most accurate and reliable data possible. You will know what kind of filtration performance you can expect from each grade, i.e. the removal efficiency for each particle size at a chosen flow rate. The test rig measures particle sizes from 0.05 to 0.5 micron with extreme accuracy. This enables you to make better decisions in designing your products and provides hard fact to validate your decisions with your customers.

MUNKTELL offers a complete range of products for the

production of breathing system filters. Our programme covers high efficiency hydrophobic air filter media (HEPA) and electrostatic filter media for different medical applications. In our programme you will also find different types of HME (heat and moisture exchange) products.

Electrostatic filter media – MES MES is an electrostatically charged needle-felt comprising

Medical filters are used in respiratory support equipment such as life supporting breathing machines. They are fitted in the airway between the equipment and the patient. The removal of bacteria from the air breathed in the hospital environment is critical in the protection of the patient, other hospital personnel and the breathing support equipment.

two electrically dissimilar synthetic polymers which are specially prepared and processed at the manufacturing stage creating a charge transfer between the two different types of fibre. Discrete charges, both positive and negative, are present on the fibre surface, however, overall, the filter is electrically neutral. As one of the fibres in the blend is an extremely effective insulator, the charge transfer is stable and permanent. The surface charging dramatically enhances the filtration efficiency, by electrostatically attracting the particles to the fibre surface and thereby removing particles from the airstream.

MES achieves very high bacterial and viral removal efficiencies and is widely used in anaesthetic circuitry, spirometry and CPAP applications. MES is laminated with a 15 g/m2 polypropylene

nonwoven. The advantage of MES is that it combines the benefits of filters with open pore structure, i.e. low air flow resistance and high dirt holding capacity, with high efficiencies even in the submicronic range.

Hydrophobic PTFE Membrane Filters PTFE membrane filters are permanently hydrophobic by their composition. They allow the passage of air and gases and do not get clogged up by humidity. When intended for the filtration of aqueous solutions, they need to be wetted with ethanol or methanol prior to use in order to permit water penetration. PTFE membrane filters are ideal for venting applications, phase separations, aerosol collection and gas filtration. PTFE membrane filters offer an excellent chemical compatibility so that they can be used even for those solvents and acids which other filter types are not resistant against.

Specification for hydrophobic PTFE Membrane Filters Adsorption: 8 µg/cm2 for γ-globuline for pore size 0.2 µm.
