LECTURE AND DISCUSSION

Philosophic Issues Dividing America - #40

Challenges to America #33

The purpose of this course is to set forth and evaluate the arguments for and against the different views on some of the philosophic issues dividing America -- issues such as abortion, capital punishment, and whether there’s an afterlife. We proceed by posing an issue and, with input from the class, laying out and assessing the arguments pro and con, all the while remaining neutral on the subject. The hope is that, notwithstanding the partisan, rhetoric-driven world in which we live, students will come to understand, and perhaps appreciate, the real arguments on both sides of the debate. 6 sessions.

There are ideals that have guided us since prerevolutionary days, but various interpretations have left some of those cherished concepts under attack. We will examine these ideals and their enlargement over time and whether the varied views are true to the ideals that have served us so well. They are: (1) Challenges to religious liberty; (2) Challenges to education; (3) Challenges to equality; (4) Words Americans Live By. 4 sessions.
