The Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI) at Ohio State Lima, a program of Road Scholar Institute, offers classes for seniors on four Tuesdays and Thursdays in April and October. LLI-Lima began in 1991. Courses on six subjects are offered each session. Individual classes last one and one half hours and meet at the same time each week. You may sign up for as many or as few classes as you wish. Since classroom size is limited, please register early for the courses you plan to attend. COSTS: The registration fee for the session is $40. This is the total cost whether you register for one course or six courses. LLI contributes a portion of the tuition you pay for courses to the Ohio State Lima “Students First, Students Now” Scholarship Fund for nontraditional students. The LLI Steering Committee determines the yearly number and value of the scholarships. Individuals may contribute to the fund separately and personally if they wish. SELECT YOUR COURSES FROM THE FOLLOWING PAGES. COMPLETE THE REGISTRATION FORM ON PAGE 7. THE REGISTRATION DEADLINE is April 4, 2016. REGISTRATION: Complete the Registration Form on page 7 and mail it with your check payable to The Ohio State University to: Office of Continuing Education, 4240 Campus Drive, PS 141 , Lima, OH 45804. Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis to a maximum of 45 persons per class. Class size is limited by room size. Questions? Call (419) 995-8863. REFUNDS: Should you be unable to attend, you may receive a refund (minus a $5 processing fee) if you withdraw at least 48 hours before the programs are scheduled to begin. PARKING: Parking is available in student lots off Mumaugh Road or Harding Highway. A limited number of handicapped parking spaces are available next to the Public Service Building. CLASSROOMS: Classes are held in Rooms 212-213 on the second floor of the Public Services Building on the Lima campus of The Ohio State University, 4240 Campus Drive, Lima, Ohio. LUNCH: Lunch is available at the Barons Bistro in Reed Hall. Participants may also go out to local establishments, or bring their own lunches and eat in the classroom.

TUESDAYS – April 5, 12, 19, 26 10:00 am to 11:30 am – Film Studies: John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock Moderator: David S. Adams, Ph.D., Associate Professor Emeritus, Sociology, Ohio State Lima. Dr. Adams, who taught sociology at Ohio State Lima for 25 years, is the weekly movie critic for The Lima News and WLIO television and unofficial poet laureate of Lima/Allen County. Watch two full-length features – Ford’s “Stagecoach” and Hitchcock’s “Spellbound” – with excerpts and discussion of other films by these great Hollywood directors. Note: The final session of Film Studies is scheduled for Thursday, April 28, from 2:45 pm to 4:15 pm in Rooms 212-213 of the Public Service Building at The Ohio State University Lima. A special, off-site session of our popular “How Do They Do That?” program will be offered from 10:00-11:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 26 at University of Northwestern Ohio Motorsports Racing Complex on Eastown Road, Lima. Training for a Career in the High Performance Racing Industry Moderator: Paul Higgins, High Performance Division Head/UNOH Motorsports Team Head Coach along with members of the UNOH Motorsports Team Presentation includes discussion of the skills, abilities and training an individual needs to be a successful candidate for a career in the motorsports racing industry. Tour of the racing facilities, see work in progress, learn how individuals gain necessary skills and learn to work as a team.

1:00 to 2:30 p.m. – Looking at Art (and Architecture) – Some “B” List Sites I Love Moderator: Mary Ann Sullivan, Ph.D. Although Mary Ann’s doctorate is in English literature, she also taught art history with great love and enthusiasm for more than 25 years at Bluffton University. Her website, focused on architecture and sculpture, has more than 21,000 pictures (which she photographed) and text. www.bluffton.edu/~sullivanm/index/index.html April 5: Upper Egypt (Egypt south of the great pyramids) focusing on Thebes (Karnak and Luxor) and the Valley of Kings/Queens. Especially interesting are tomb paintings, notably the Tomb of Nefertari, which is almost impossible to see these days. April 12: Provence with emphasis on Roman and medieval sites. April 19: The Veneto, focusing on late medieval and Renaissance art in Padua, Venice, and Vicenza, with a special look at Giotto’s frescoes in the Scrovegni Chapel and Palladio’s architecture. April 26: Two port cities, Glasgow and Rotterdam. These younger, once grimier sisters of Edinburgh and Amsterdam, have their own riches, whether the elegant architecture and design of Charles Rennie Macintosh in Glasgow or the fabulous modern architecture of Rotterdam. 2:45 to 4:15 p.m. – Precious Metals/Precious Stones April 5: Moderator: Randy L. Camper, Professional Numismatist, specialist/grader/authenticator of rare coins. Numismatics in the U.S. during the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including notable changes in how collectors have regarded the hobby over time. April 12: Moderators: Tyler Hendershot, CEO of Raines Jewelry, and Bruce Hendershot, Owner/ President of Raines Jewelry. Determining the Value of Precious Metals, Glittering Stones and Other Collectables: a fun and interactive lesson on the fundamentals of diamonds and other precious stones, focusing on the three “C’s” of diamonds and interests from the class on the wild, wonderful world of jewelry and precious metals. April 19: Moderators – Ken Strickland, retired Associate Professor of Geology, Wright State University, Lake Campus, where he taught chemistry, physics and earth science for 38 years, and Glenn Hux, BS in Science Comprehensive and MAT in zoology. Glenn spent 37 years in education prior to his retirement. The Langsdon Mineral Collection – Mercer County District Library has

a hidden gem of more than 800 minerals showcased at the library. This program includes a presentation and hands on exploration of 20 minerals. Learn about mineral composition and uses while being entertained with memorabilia and stories about these minerals. April 26: Moderator: Randy L. Camper, Professional Numismatist, specialist/grader/authenticator of rare coins. History of Precious Metals in the United States – why precious metals may now be an important addition to most investment portfolios. THURSDAYS – April 7, 14, 21, 28 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. – Comparative Religions Moderator: Ted Houghton, Ph.D., Sociology Department Coordinator, The Ohio State University at Lima. Comparative religion is the systematic comparison of doctrines and practices of the world’s religions. In this course, Dr. Houghton will present special topics in religious studies and world religions. 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. – U.S. Diplomacy and Rule of Law Moderators: Karen Hall, Director of Democratic Governance and Rule of Law LL.M. and Assistant Professor of Law, and Brian Anderson, Assistant Director of the LL.M. Program and Assistant Professor of Law, both from Ohio Northern University. The Democratic Governance and Rule of Law LLM is a unique program for qualified students with a strong background or interest in working for the rule of law, human rights and economic development in transitional countries around the world. April 7: The U.S. State Department and Foreign Diplomacy April 14: U.S. Rule of Law promotion abroad – USAID, the State Department and Foreign Policy Goals April 21: What is International Law and the U.S. role in keeping and promoting it? April 28: Stories of the Rule of Law Abroad – Hear from foreign lawyers and U.S. practitioners 2:45 to 4:15 p.m. – How Do They Do That? April 7: Moderator: Jay Begg, President of the Allen County Commissioners, is the sixth generation of his family to live on and manage the family farm located in Monroe Township. Prior to becoming Commissioner, he served as Manager of the Allen County Fair and Fairgrounds for 17 years. Farming in the 21st Century – Drawing on his experience as a lifelong farmer, Jay will discuss how farming has changed through the years, new

farming methods, new products, current trends and the impact of technology on farmers. April 14: Moderator: Chris Horstman, Senior Process Engineer, INEOS Technologies, B.S. ChE. The INEOS Impact – A look at INEOS products in your daily life. The processes INEOS uses to make their products. How INEOS operations impact the community. A brief overview and history of INEOS. April 21: Moderators: – Ronda Lehman, COO of St Rita’s Professional Services, and Beth Keehn, Director of Marketing and Communications Keeping our Community Healthy – How and Why Healthcare is Changing. Healthcare is changing rapidly – and for the better. Insurance and reimbursement models have transformed the way we think about wellness, and technology and electronic data help us communicate more effectively with patients. The end result is a more efficient healthcare system where patients are more in control of their own healthcare than ever before. April 28: Dr. David Adams will present the final session of his Film Studies course on April 28 from 2:45-4:15 p.m. Note: The fourth “How Do They Do That?” class, Training for a Career in the High Performance Racing Industry, is scheduled for 10:00-11:30 a.m., April 26, at the UNOH Motorsports Complex on Eastown Road in Lima.
