Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, California State University Long Beach Proposal: Operating Grant, fiscal Year 2010-2011 Introduction The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at California State University, Long Beach (OLLI at CSULB), as a conscientious financial steward, has maintained contingency funds at the end of each fiscal year until 2009-2010. This past year, with the addition of an Executive Director and the impact of the worldwide financial crisis, we have found ourselves in a challenging situation. Because of this, we have begun planning for new financial realities, including the need for a strategic plan for fimdraising. The opportunity for this grant from the Osher Foundation has fiirther spurred our planning. We are currently working with the College of Health and Human Services, the Division of University Relations and Development, our Advisory Board, and OLLI volunteers on a three-year fundraising initiative. The following plan has been developed in consultation with the OLLI at CSULB Executive Committee and Governing Council. FY 2010-2011 Plan and Goals: 1. Develop long-range goals (3-years) for fimdraising to enhance sustainability, in consultation with the College of Health and Human Services, the Division of University Relations and Development, our Advisory Board, and OLLI volunteers (completed) 2. Conduct a cost-benefit analysis in collaboration with the membership on raising annual and/or class fees to support sustainability 3. Conduct discussion/focus groups with OLLI members to elicit input on how to make our fundraising plan work. 4. Obtain support of the OLLI Governing Council for the fundraising plan concept (completed). Solicit recommendations from the Council on strategies for fundraising for sustainability. Keep fundraising as an agenda item at Governing Council monthly meetings in order to maintain support and obtain ongoing input. (The Governing Council includes all Standing Committee Chairs, two members-at-large, the Executive Committee, and ex-officio members from the College, Advisory Board and invited guests. The Council meetings are open to all members). 5. Identify our donor base through community assessment with input from the Executive Committee, Governing Council, Advisory Board and the College/University Development officers.

Using the above strategies for membership involvement we will employ mechanisms such as, •

Present donors with information on a variety of giving opportunities including general/operating funds, directed gifts, and planned gifts. Develop solicitation letters that will be reviewed and updated armually.

Recognize donors in some format in our quarterly newsletter/ schedule o f classes. Exact mechanisms will be decided with Governing Council/member input.
