Hard work will pay off The second term of the academic year 2016/17 is now in full swing, and the students have made an outstanding start to the year, despite the less than ideal freezing weather conditions! Year 11 students have responded extremely well to feedback from teachers with regard to their PPE results; for some this has meant staying late after school to complete additional work, which very much embodies the key message of the recent Year 11 Results Assembly: work hard and you will get a better grade. A number of Year 11 students will also be invited to attend a range of after school intervention sessions between now and the start of formal exams, as teachers work to support the boys, ensuring they fulfil their potential and achieve the grades that will enable them to take the next steps in their education. Students in both Years 9 and 10 have also sat assessments over the last fortnight as they demonstrate the learning and progress made since the start of the academic year; we look forward to sharing outcomes and results with you in the interim reports that will follow in due course. Despite the freezing weather and lack of sunshine, the students are continuing to work hard and persevere with a positive mindset – well done for all you are doing, students. Keep on working hard and your efforts will pay off! Mr Hayter, Assistant Headteacher

Year 11 Revision Bank Teachers have uploaded resources onto Google Drive to help students with revision. Here is a link to access these resources: http://goo.gl/Vs6syQ Please encourage students to use these revision resources. Mr Brooks, Key Stage 4 Lead Practitioner

The Importance of Attendance On behalf of the wider Heads of House team, I would firstly like to thank you for encouraging exceptional attendance from your sons and daughters as they journey through Glyn. As you know, attendance is perhaps the single most significant contributor to student achievement, and the exemplary results our students receive would not be possible without their regular attendance, and your support in encouraging this. This is ever more important with the Year 11 exam season now looming. Our Year 11 students will be sitting the most important examinations of their school careers in the next few months. Therefore, their attendance to all lessons is absolutely vital to ensure that they are up to date on all their classwork and independent learning tasks (ILTs). On the odd occasion that you might need to keep your child at home through illness, please ensure that they are back in as soon as possible. If they are well enough to be up and about at home, they are generally well enough to attend school. Thank you, as always, for your support in encouraging, and emphasising the importance of, excellent attendance. Miss Seal, Head of Oaks House

Four Oxbridge Offers We are delighted that four of our Year 13 students have been offered places at Oxbridge universities, with subjects ranging from Music to Maths. Congratulations to the following students: Amaya Jones, Chemistry at Oxford A*A*A* Emma Kiero-Watson, Architecture at Cambridge A*AA Jack Pepper, Music at Oxford AAA James Lane, Maths at Cambridge A*A*A Miss Lindley, Deputy Head of Sixth Form

Fundraising Event for Years 7 to 13 – Wednesday 1 February There will be a fundraising event in the Sports Hall at lunchtime on Wednesday 1 February. There will be a variety of activities including a cake sale, Crossbar Challenge, Beat the Keeper, Keepy-Uppy competition and football scratch cards. There will be prizes on offer for all of the competitions and a jackpot of £10 for the scratch card winners.

Half of the money raised will go towards helping Rowcroft Hospice, a charity which supports people with life-limiting illnesses, and the other half will go towards the Glyn School Football Tour 2017. Please bring a small amount of money with you on Wednesday if you would like to support this fundraising event.

Year 11 Catering Students Donned Their Chef Whites Year 11 Catering students donned their chef whites and took to the food room last week to complete their final assessed practical exams, with the marks awarded accounting for 20% of their final GCSE grade. In a Masterchef style set-up, students were tasked with making a healthy two-course meal suitable for a school canteen within a three hour time limit. Working against the clock, students had to make a main course, side dish and dessert, with dishes selected to demonstrate culinary skills and ability. During the exam, students were assessed on a number of areas, including skills shown (for example: jointing a chicken, pasta making, sauce making and custard making), awareness of health, safety and hygiene procedures, organisation of work area and time management. In addition, students had to show that they had adapted their dishes to make them healthier and more nutritious, for example by leaving the skins on fruit and vegetables to increase fibre content and by using leaner cuts of meat to reduce the fat content. When food was served at the end of the exam, it was assessed based on its appearance and presentation, along with its sensory qualities (in other words, Mrs Edwards and I had to taste test everything…sometimes even twice, just to make sure it was edible…). The outcomes were delicious, with the following list highlighting some of the tasty savoury dishes that were sampled: Homemade gnocchi in a ragu sauce, topped with homemade mozzarella and served with garlic pizza bread Chicken Jalfrezi and rice, served with homemade naan breads and homemade mango chutney Steamed Asian style sea bream served with homemade soba noodles and vegetable spring rolls Shredded chicken and pesto lasagne served with garlic pizza bread Chicken and mushroom pie served with dauphinoise potatoes and seasonal vegetables Overall, the week was a great success and I am incredibly proud of what all of the Year 11 students achieved in terms of their work ethic, organisation and outcomes. I would also like to say a huge thank you to the students’ parents and carers who helped them with preparing for their practical exam. The students have shown just how capable they are, and it has been a pleasure for Mrs Edwards and I to witness. Now that the practical component of the GCSE is complete, I hope that the boys are motivated to continue using and further developing their skills and understanding when working with food. Miss Owen, Head of Food Technology

Trip to the Bay of Naples - Rescheduled to October 2017 The Food Technology Department are delighted to announce that the trip to the Bay of Naples, Italy, that was previously scheduled for Enrichment Week has been rescheduled for October half term, and is now open to all students in Year 8, as well as students studying Food Preparation and Nutrition in Years 9 and 10. The proposed date for the trip is Monday 23 October to Thursday 26 October 2017. I have visited Italy myself a couple of times in the last two years, first exploring Rome and Sorrento in May 2015, and then Florence and Cinque Terre in Summer 2016. It is a truly breathtaking country with beautiful sights and a fantastic food culture that I would love to share with students. The four day trip will be organised by Travelbound and will give students the opportunity to immerse themselves fully into Italian cuisine and culture. Included in our itinerary will be the following, although this may be subject to change: · · · · · · · ·

Cookery Class making Gnocchi Cookery Class making Strufoli Pizza Making Cookery Class in Sorrento followed by a Pizzeria Lunch David Ice Cream demonstration Visit to Gargiulo Olive Oil Factory Visit to a Limoncello Factory Visit to a Mozzarella Farm Visit to Pompeii

As well as supporting the new GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition specification, which requires students to have the opportunity to ‘prepare and cook recipes from a range of countries and cuisines, using different equipment and cooking methods’, the trip is perfect for students who have a passion for good food and who are keen to extend their culinary skill base. The cost of the trip is £675, which will be payable in instalments through ParentPay. If you would like to reserve a place for your son, we will require a deposit of £175 by Tuesday 31 January 2017. Please be advised that the trip is limited to 20 spaces. If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected] Miss Owen, Head of Food Technology Chef of the Month, January 2017 What a busy month it has been in Food Technology! With all Year 11 students completing their practical exams as part of their GCSE controlled assessment, other year groups have unfortunately missed out on some practical work. Despite this, however, the students have continued to work enthusiastically. To kick off the year, one student from each year group has been selected for the fantastic contributions they have made within lessons, with this month’s chosen chefs of the month listed below: Year 8 Chef of the Month – Joel D’Souza – 8 Carew For being extremely proactive about getting his ingredients ready and asking lots of questions in theory lessons. Year 9 Chef of the Month – Adam Webb-Smith – 9 Abbey For being completely focused during all lessons and producing a great Ratatouille that demonstrated excellent chopping skills. Year 10 Chef of the Month – William Davieson – 10 St Benet For always striving to complete work to a high standard, and consistently demonstrating excellent organisation skills. Year 11 Chef of the Month – Max Brown – 11 Bourne For his outstanding performance in his practical exam, showing that practice and effort really does pay off! In the exam, Max served up a mouth-wateringly delicious chicken and chorizo lasagne. This was followed by an equally tasty Orchard’s Eve Pudding. The recipes for both of these dishes are attached with this newsletter so that you can give them a try for yourself at home! As well as receiving achievement points, these students will be entered into a prize draw to win a recipe book, which will be drawn at the end of the term. Well done all! Miss Owen, Head of Food Technology

Please Help Us to Collect Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers! Active Kids vouchers are back at Sainsbury’s until 2 May 2017. Over the years that the scheme has been running, we have been able to redeem the vouchers for a plethora of sporting and cookery equipment for the benefit of our students. The PE department has been equipped with a huge array of equipment from shuttle cocks to basketballs, and the Food Technology department has benefited from everything from wooden spoons to saucepans, and even a fridge! The vouchers are available from all tills; at the manned tills the cashier should offer the vouchers to you when you pay, and at the self-checkouts simply select to collect the vouchers on the screen when you checkout. The vouchers do not seem to be as freely available as they once were, so please do ask the cashier for your vouchers if they forget to offer them to you. Also, the vouchers are quite small and could be easily over-looked with your receipt, so please keep an eye out for them. We do need to collect a considerable number of vouchers per item, and this is where we are asking for your help. Please ask friends and family to help us collect Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers for Glyn School and place them in our collection box in Student Reception. We are grateful to both Sainsbury’s for running this excellent scheme again this year and to all those who help us to collect as many vouchers as possible. Marion Meadows, Publicity Officer

Aiming Higher in Languages Event - Review Last Thursday, a group of 60 Year 11 French and Spanish students from Glyn, Rosebery and The Beacon schools took part in the annual Aiming Higher in Languages event which was held at Glyn School. These students had been hand-picked by their teachers as having particular ability with languages. The aim of the day was to allow students to both flex their creative linguistic muscles by taking part in a range of MFL activities outside of the classroom, and to learn about different routes that they could take into languages beyond GCSE. Students were also given the opportunity to speak to A Level students about their own experiences of studying languages. The day started with A Level style language sessions to learn the new vocabulary and structures, after which students got to try their hand at creating a voice-over in their chosen language to accompany an advertisement warning of the dangers of binge drinking. The three schools worked brilliantly together, creating some really impressive advertisements in French and Spanish. We were thoroughly impressed with the confidence of the students involved and the quality of the advanced language they produced. It was also great to see how languages can come to life for students in a creative setting. Mrs Duffield, MFL

Educake Science Students have been set up on a website called Educake. Please click this link: www.educake.co.uk Science teachers set revision and homework quizzes on this website which can be used on a computer, smart phone or a tablet. Students can also set their own revision quizzes to complete. If students have any questions about Educake they should speak to their science teacher.

Seeking Raffle Prizes for Sports Awards Event In March, we will be holding an evening event to celebrate sporting achievements throughout the school. We will be holding a raffle and are asking Glyn families and your connections if you are able to donate a prize for the raffle. Suitable prizes might be free personal training sessions, or a bucket of balls for the driving range at Horton Golf Club, for perhaps tickets to a football game. Prizes of a sporting nature would be particularly welcomed. To date, we have an England rugby shirt, two tickets for any London Irish home game and two tickets to a Harlequins game. If you can help, please contact me via email to [email protected] Thank you for your support. Mr Hawkes, KS3 Coordinator PE, Rugby Academy Lead

Seeking Donations of Food Magazines Do you have any unwanted food magazines at home that are either cluttering up worktops or filling up recycling bins? If so, please donate them to the Food Technology department. Regardless of age or publication, they will be greatly received by students to provide ideas and inspiration. Please take any donations to Student Reception. Thank you. Miss Owen, Head of Food Technology

Nut Allergies We have a number of students who are highly allergic to nuts. In the most severe cases, the allergy can be triggered off with just air-born particles if someone is, or was, eating nuts anywhere in the room. I am sure you can appreciate the severity of such an allergy and the potential devastating consequences. As a result, please ensure that you do not bring any kind of nuts into school. The Cucina Restaurant does not produce food containing nuts, however they advise that some products may contain traces of nuts. Thank you for your understanding.

Warm Clothes for Games and PE Lessons May I remind students to bring suitable outdoor clothing to wear over their Games or PE kit during this colder weather. Students may wear unbranded dark coloured sports top and bottoms. Students may also wear a suitable hat in bad weather, if their PE teacher gives permission. Mr Martin, Head of Games and PE

The LRC Book of the Week - Ready Player One by Ernest Cline It's the year 2044, and the real world has become an ugly place. The oil is gone, the climate is ruined and there is widespread famine, poverty and disease. Wade Watts escapes this depressing reality by spending his waking hours playing OASIS, a virtual world where you can be anything you want and where you can live on any of 10,000 planets. Wade is obsessed by the ultimate lottery ticket hidden inside this alternate reality - OASIS founder James Halliday has promised that his huge fortune and control of the OASIS will go to the person who can solve the riddles. When Wade tumbles on to the key to the first puzzle he finds himself up against thousands of competitors in a desperate race to the prize. “Anyone who plays games for a hobby will enjoy this! It is based on video games of the 80s and 90s trivia. It is very exciting. A great adventure.” Alex Salmon 12M2 Available to borrow from the LRC!

Another Enjoyable Crèche Yet again, another successful crèche took place during Year 8 Parents’ and Carers’ evening, with many happy children enjoying biscuits and orange juice. The children played with puzzles, Jenga and many other exciting games, leaving many of them unwilling to leave when it was time to go home. Thanks to Mrs Mabbott for running it and to Mrs Sewell and Mrs Johnston for assisting the children, who loved it! Charlie Buckley 12SB and Tiana Davey 13M

Glyn School – 90th Anniversary Celebration - Former Students Glyn School is excited to be hosting a large number of present and former Glyn students and staff to celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2017. On Thursday 30 March at 7pm, The Chaloner Building and Sports Hall will be hosting live music, drama productions, poetry readings, art displays and exhibitions, as well as distinguished former student speakers. Former students are warmly invited to attend this free event. Due to the large number of former students who may be interested, admittance will be by ticket only. Therefore, we ask that if you would like to be part of the audience at this event that you use the link below to sign up for a ticket. The maximum number of tickets which can be requested is two per person. Please register your ticket request by Sunday 5 February; regrettably we will be unable to provide tickets to former students who reply after this date. 90th Anniversary Celebration – Ticket Request In addition, we would welcome any former students to write between one and three paragraphs on their experiences both at Glyn School and in their lives since. All entries will be considered for publication in an official Glyn 90 book, although we cannot guarantee publication. If you would like to enter a summary of your time at Glyn, please email your text as a Word document to [email protected] with the email subject as `Glyn 90 Book`. This will be a fantastic event for the school and we hope to involve as many former students as possible. Please remember that we anticipate high demand for the event, so please remember to register your interest in attending by Sunday 5 February at the latest. Jack Pepper, Head Boy, and Olivia Buckley, Head Girl

Glyn School - 90th Anniversary 2017 will be an important year in Glyn School’s history, as we mark the 90 th Anniversary of its founding. The Student Leadership Team has decided to organise a series of events across many subjects to commemorate this, and these will culminate in a formal evening event in the Sports Hall and The Chaloner Building on Thursday 30 March 2017 at 7pm. This event will feature live music from individual students, past and present, as well as poetry readings, small drama productions, art displays and technological demonstrations. Audience members, of whom around 1,000 will be invited, will walk between the different exhibits in a manner similar to the annual Creative Arts’ Evening. This unprecedented event will aim to emphasise the timelessness of our school, and so the inclusion of former Glyn students is hugely important in these celebrations. If you are in touch with any former students, please encourage them to contact the school if they would be interested in participating in the evening event, whether with a musical performance, poetry reading, original piece of art or a recollection of outstanding memories of your time at Glyn. From this expression of interest, the Student Leadership Team will work with senior staff to select the most appropriate acts for the event. Former students who would like to be involved in this event with a performance, reading or display, should contact [email protected] with their name, address, telephone number and a short description of their intended activity. 2017 will be a thoroughly exciting year for the school, and we look forward to welcoming many former students back to commemorate the fantastic contribution Glyn School has made to the local area. Jack Pepper and Olivia Buckley, Head Boy and Head Girl 2016-2017

Cross Country Lily Kyle 12A was our first ever Sixth Form girl to compete for Glyn in the Surrey Cross Country Championships which took place last weekend. Unfortunately Lily missed out on English Schools’ qualification by just two places (and was only 8 seconds behind), but it was a great effort from her. Lily was joined by Adam Booth 7 Oaks, competing in the Junior Boys’ section, who came a commendable 30th place in difficult going. Well done to both students for representing the school in tough conditions. Mr Hawkes, KS3 Coordinator PE, Rugby Academy Leader

Sportsman of the Week - James Kelly 12A This week’s Sportsman of the Week is James Kelly for his outstanding performance in the 2 nd XV rugby match against Tiffin School on Wednesday 25 January. Although Glyn School lost this fixture 10-5, James’ effort throughout the match was exceptional. The conditions were far from ideal, especially for a man of James' stature, but his faultless tenacity and ability to direct his weighty pack from breakdown to breakdown gave Glyn the best possible opportunity to win. Despite the cold and wet, James’ passing from the back of the scrums and mauls was excellent, providing fantastic service to his backline. James’ work-rate was second to none and he never gave up trying to rescue the match, even in the dying stages. Wednesday’s match was a tremendous team performance and Glyn were unlucky not to get more from the game. Congratulations to James though for a sterling effort and keep up the hard work! Mr MacLeod, KS4 Coordinator, PE, Cricket Academy Leader

Netball Glyn v St Cecilia’s Win for Glyn On Monday 23 January, Glyn put forward a strong team to play against St Cecilia's A team. Although intimidated at first by their strength and tactics, I think everyone would agree that it was one of the toughest matches we have ever played and subsequently won. The Glyn team performed to a very high standard, clearly demonstrating our good team work and maintained high spirits throughout the game. The final score of 35-16 after the 4 x 15 minutes quarters was a great win for Glyn and gave us the confidence in our next few league matches coming up. Shout out to Orla Jordan for her excellent play in the positions Wing Attack and Centre throughout. You really did deserve it, Orla! Once again, a huge thank you to Mrs Mabbott, Coach, for organising and umpiring the match. Team: Ciara Purvis, (Captain), Gemma Gosden, Bethany Chapman, Louise Chappell, Sophie Yeates, Lizzie Hillier, Orla Jordan and Charlotte Hope. Gemma Gosden 12 Carew
