ASPIRE & ACHIEVE

ASPIRE & ACHIEVE

Welcome

Welcome to The de Ferrers Academy. We hope to support your son/daughter on a seven year journey which will enable them to fulfil their potential in all respects. Our philosophy of “Aspire and Achieve” is embedded across the Academy, and is reflected in both the excellent academic outcomes achieved by our students, but also in their personal development. Put simply, we encourage all students to be the best that they can be, in all that they do. We aim to support the community which we serve and provide a well ordered environment which allows young people to flourish.

Our mission: Their future

Nick Holmes Principal

Our vision is a future in which every child at the Academy aspires to achieve their goals and fulfil their potential in education, life and employment.

Welcome

At de Ferrers we appreciate that the move from Key Stage 2 to 3 can be a stressful time for both students and parents. Our extensive programme of activities aims to make it a smooth transition for all. Transition involves all our prospective Year 6 students visiting the Academy, sometimes multiple times, before they start in September. Our Head of Year 7 and senior staff visit our primary partner schools to meet the children and staff to ensure that we get to know your child as quickly as possible and we also hold a parents’/carers’ evening which gives you the opportunity to meet your child’s form tutor and ask any questions that you may have. We also hold Summer Schools in July and August which further help with both the social and academic transition. In the meantime, if you have any questions or queries about your child’s move to de Ferrers, then please do not hesitate to contact me. Mr Paul Galloway Vice Principal

It is our mission to ensure that every child at the Academy achieves their individual goals through excellent teaching, learning and support.

PRIDE IN OUR ACADEMY

Our students told us that they take PRIDE in their Academy and we have developed our five key values to reflect this: Partnership Respect Integrity Determination Excellence These values are used in lessons and Academy life. They are the foundations of our Academy community and encourage students to become well-rounded and caring young adults.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

We believe excellent academic achievement comes from motivating students through respect and positive relationships to engage in lessons, challenging their knowledge and encouraging the fulfilment of academic potential. Our extremely dedicated team of specialist teachers has strong subject knowledge and understands students’ learning needs. We deliver a broad and balanced curriculum that inspires and motivates students, making learning engaging and enjoyable. Our Academy results have seen year-on-year success at all Key Stages, resulting in our students going on to study in our highly successful Sixth Form and top universities across the country, including Oxford and Cambridge.

Our House System Our House System comprises six houses making up the word ‘BURTON’. It involves every student and every member of staff competing in a wide variety of competitions including sports, quizzes, art, photography and many more. Students are encouraged to represent their house at least once a year in an activity to gain points that are collated for an overall house prize at the end of the year.

SUPPORT TO SUCCEED

Here at the Academy we believe that every child needs to be supported to ensure that they are successful both academically and in life. We have implemented a Support & Guidance structure that has non-teaching Heads of Year and Assistant Heads of Year. This allows true relationships to develop between teaching staff, students and pastoral care. The students are appreciative of the fact that there is always someone available who has time to listen. We encourage parents, especially if they have any concerns, to contact the Support & Guidance Team and, if necessary, arrange an appointment to meet with us. We firmly believe that every student can succeed with the right support.

MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE At the Academy, we strive to provide a safe and supportive environment that fosters aspiration, success and achievement. We take PRIDE in our students’ success; their achievements are our reward. We are a centre of academic excellence and we have high expectations of our students, staff and parents. We see your child’s education as a partnership and, to ensure the best results, we all need to work together. Our experience has shown that respect, good manners and hard work in class result in success. We expect all of our students to wear the correct uniform, conduct themselves in a responsible manner and take an active role in their education. We are committed to providing the best education possible for your child and we are confident that they can, and will, Aspire and Achieve at The de Ferrers Academy.

THE DE FERRERS COMMUNITY

Charity fundraising

Parents and visitors often comment on the friendly nature of staff and students at the Academy. Through our five key values, we encourage a strong sense of community and one of our key goals is to ensure that our students grow into responsible members of society.

Donation of toys to children’s respite centre

Every student is encouraged to develop interpersonal skills through extra-curricular activities, roles of responsibility and undertaking charitable work. Many of our students voluntarily undertake charity work and take pride in helping others who are less fortunate than themselves. We support and encourage our students to show care for others and regularly celebrate charitable and community achievements as seen on our website and in the local press.

ACADEMY LIFE Life at the Academy is an enriching experience for students. There is a wide variety of clubs, activities and trips available to participate in outside the classroom.

We have extra-curricular activities across all areas of the Academy, which provide a great way for students to try something different, make new friends and gain valuable life skills. Our subject related activities include sports clubs, music lessons, science clubs and much more. We also offer non-subject related activities, such as The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, ‘Student Voice’ and Pride Ambassadors. Our Pride Ambassadors are a group of students who support the Academy in a variety of ways to ensure that every student aspires and achieves. There really is something for everyone.
