Words from our Principal February 2016

Dear Parents,

Greetings~ As we turn the corner in our academic year to the beginning of our third quarter, it gives us time to reflect on what we can continue or change to make the year a success for your son and/or st rd th daughter. At our upcoming student-parent-teacher conferences, on March 1 , 3 , and 7 this gives you that chance to chart the course for the rest of the year. The measure of success depends on the student taking ownership with us as teachers and parents helping to teach them the skills to guide the way.

th

Our students and staff have invested in giving back to the Community this past month. Our 5 grade students participated in making Food Bags for Feeding the Hungry Program which sends bags to people around the world and here in Sioux Falls The Student Council is leading us in a school wide project called the “Souper Bowl” collecting soup for the needy in Sioux Falls. My thanks for your efforts in supporting your children to help those in need.

nd

“Reading Rocks!” has also been an emphasis with our Dr. Seuss birthday on March 2 . My thanks for your participation in purchasing or sponsoring a Reading Rocks t-shirt for a student at Cleveland. We will nd also have a reading day with our students on March 2 . Another literacy event coming our way for the th th 4 and 5 grade is Book Battles. The reading of assigned books and team completion is a great way to motivate our students in a fun way. Please look for the information that went home this past week.

My thanks for your efforts to have your students dressed warmly for the blast of cold weather this past month and being on time. I know as a Mom it can add to a hectic morning getting ready for school with the additional outdoor clothing.

Have a wonderful month! Try to enjoy those small moments with your children which can bring such pleasure to a day~

Anne B. Williams, Principal Cleveland Elementary School

Kids Against Hunger Program

Our fifth graders at Cleveland helped feed kids around the world through the

Kids Against Hunger program. The project, organized by Mrs. McKay, was more than just filling bags with food. It's also about math, social studies, and writing. Scooping up the correct amounts of ingredients brought math into the equation. Each bag is filled with rice, crushed soy, a blend of six vegetables, vitamins and mineral powder. The kids also knew where the food would be going. Destinations include Haiti, cities in the U.S. and some bags will be staying here in Sioux Falls. Students used coordinate grids on a map to find these locations. Once the bags were packed and boxed up, the students wrote about their experience with the community service project. It's a hands on approach to learning that had students eager to help. All the students did a great job working together as a team in a common cause. There were students teaching students and students encouraging students. That's what it's all about. Thank you to everyone who supported this effort; custodians, administrators, teachers, parents, Rotary, and especially the students.

Staff Recruitment Starts Now! By Dr. Brian Maher, Superintendent

It hasn’t been long since students wrapped up the first semester of the 2015-16 school year, but already our staff is looking ahead to the start of the 2016-17 school year. February and March are the prime recruiting months for new teachers and the Sioux Falls School District strives to be at the head of the class to attract the best of the best. Research shows the single most important factor in student success is having the highest quality teacher in the classroom. That’s why our Human Resources Department is busy with job fairs and early-hire interviews – getting a jump start on talking with teacher candidates who will complete their students ahead of the September 2016 school start date. New teachers bring with them enthusiasm, a fresh perspective and the latest researched teaching techniques. Each year, the Sioux Falls School District hires about 160 teachers – half come with a wealth of teaching experience; half are just beginning their careers. All go through a series of very competitive face-to-face interviews, complete a detailed screening assessment and other metrics to determine the best and brightest candidates for teaching positions in our schools. In addition to working with colleges and universities to recruit, we use online ads to attract applicants, place “Employment” in a priority spot on our website and never over-look the power word-of-mouth recruiting provides. Our teacher workforce currently totals 1,750 and is only expected to grow thanks to the excellent Sioux Falls economy. Further, another 1,450 employees are needed to support students, maintain facilities and provide general operational assistance to our 35 schools. Early spring certainly causes a flutter of very exciting activity in the District. We welcome the opportunity to meet and select any candidate who wishes to positively impact the life of a child. So, if you know an excellent veteran teacher, a future college graduate, or someone who desires a meaningful career in a positive work environment, please encourage them to apply at: sf.k12.sd.us/Employment. If that person is you, we look forward to meeting you very soon!

A huge shout out goes to past PTA members for visiting our school on our late start day and proving treats for our staff and a donation of $500 to sponsor students in our Reading Rocks t-shirt campaign! These ladies had their own children attend Cleveland back in the day and still have a heart for giving to our community!

Thanks to this donation along with many staff members, family members, and community members, we were able to reach our goal of providing every student k-5 with an affordable t-shirt to be worn on Dr. Seuss's birthday Wednesday, March 2nd!

Not only does Reading Rock, but so does Cleveland!!!
