Prepare.  Print each word of the Bible verse on an index card. Include the scripture reference. Sing together.  Sing “I Learn from the Bible” (track 1). Tell the Bible story.  Open your Bible to 2 Kings. Ask children to tell about a time when they found something that was lost. Show the Bible word card and talk about its meaning. Say: “In this story, King Josiah found something that had been lost.” Tell the Bible story.

Bible Story

Josiah (joh SIGH uh) was 8 years old when he became king. He loved God and wanted to obey Him. The kings who lived before Josiah did not love God. They had not taken care of the temple. It was dirty and the walls and floors were crumbling. When he was older, King Josiah sent his helper, Shaphan (SHAY fan), to see the priest, Hilkiah (hil KIGH uh). Shaphan told Hilkiah, “Count the money the people have brought to the temple. Give it to builders and carpenters so that they can clean and repair the temple.”   The men worked to clean the temple. They repaired parts of the temple that were broken. The workers found a Bible scroll that had been lost for a long time. Hilkiah said, “We’ve found this Bible scroll.” He handed the scroll to Shaphan.  Shaphan read the scroll. Then he took it to King Josiah. Shaphan said, “The men were working in the temple. This lost scroll was found in the temple.” Shaphan read some of the Bible scroll to the king.  When King Josiah heard the words from the Bible scroll, he was sad and upset. “The words of this Bible scroll tell us what God wants us to do,” Josiah said. “We have not been doing these things. We have not been obeying God.”

Josiah gathered the people at the temple. The people listened to the words from the Bible scroll. King Josiah said, “I will do what the words of the Bible scroll say to do. I promise to obey God’s rules and laws.” All of the people promised they would obey God, too. They would do what the Bible said to do. Recall the story.  Guide boys and girls to recall the Bible story as they look at the teaching picture. Ask kindergartners to stand when you say something that is true and sit when you say something that is not true. Say simple statements such as “Josiah was a king. The temple was brand new and did not need any repairs. The men found a lost shoe. Men worked to repair the temple. The men found a lost scroll.”

Pray.  Thank God for the Bible and all of its true stories. Make life application.  Point to your Bible and say: “The Bible is a book of stories that are true. It tells us about God and is unlike any other book.”

Learn a Bible verse.  Place the five word cards in the correct order facedown on the floor. Invite a child to turn over one of the cards. Read the word on the card. Continue until all cards have been turned. Point to each word. Guide kindergartners to say the verse with you.

Explore the Bible.   Allow children to find their favorite picture in the Bible. >> Family Connection  Mail or send home the “September Parent E-mail” (enhanced CD) and “Parent Letter” (pack item 16). Give each child a Kindergarten Connection weekly pages.

If you have limited time or teaching staff and need a Quick Plan, include these activities to achieve today’s Bible teaching and life application at group time.
