A Message for Leaders Thank you for accepting the responsibility and challenge of leading your Beginners class this Quarter. May God bless and guide you as you work to help the little ones understand what a wonderful, loving, caring God we worship.

PREPARATION

• Check through the whole program. See what has to be coloured, cut out and put together. Gather helpers to do it. Put them in a packet with its name on it. Keep them. • Remember there are only 3 new lessons to prepare, but know them well as you and the children will act most of the stories. • Learn any new songs. Write them out. Most of the songs are new words to old tunes. Practise them. • You will need some class sets of song aids: Bells for the welcome song Musical instruments - rattles, shakers, wooden clappers, milo tin drums, plastic toy trumpets etc. Bible books. Donkey face masks - pattern supplied. Banners for “Jesus Loves Me” Tools - hammer, saw, axe, screw driver, etc Happy Helpers - rake, broom, scrubbing brush, fire wood, tea towel, etc Table Setting - cloth, plastic cups and plates, cutlery, etc • Practise doing the finger plays in the language used by the children. Try to translate the songs in the same way. • You will also need an offering container, artificial birthday cake and candles, song sheets, flannel board, helpers • Plan to have everything set up early enough to enable you to welcome each child as they arrive and direct them to an activity corner. May you, Jesus and the children be blessed each Sabbath.

Lesson 1 JANUARY

Little Jesus, Happy Helper SERVICE God calls us to serve others

REFERENCE Luke 2:39,40,51,21; My Bible Friends. MEMORY VERSE “Jesus was obedient.” Luke 2:51. OBJECTIVES The children will: Know they can obey as Jesus did. Feel loving toward family members and pets. Respond by being obedient to parents and kind to family members and pets. THE MESSAGE I obey and help others. This is a Lesson About Service Children are naturally self-centered. They learn Christian behaviour by example. It is the same for adults. We learn best by following Jesus’ example. This lesson is about Jesus’ life as a little boy. He is kind to everyone - at home, at church, and in the village. As we look at His life and choices, we can help our children learn that we are happiest when we choose to treat others the way He did.

Room Decorations Set up the front to show both indoor and outdoor areas. Use mats or sheets to outline the walls of the “room.” It does not have to be very high. Inside put a table (carton box), stool, bed mat and pillow. The outside areas each side will have tree branches and potted plants or plastic flowers, and a stone or log to sit on.

1. ARRIVAL ACTIVITIES Plan simple play activities for the children who come early. These activities, under the supervision of an adult, should relate to the program which is based on the monthly Bible story. Here are some suggestions: 6…Pacific Beginner-Leader Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

BIRTHDAYS  You could use an artificial birthday cake, candles and matches, a small offering container and a card, if possible, or a special mat for the birthday child to sit on with some balloons tied to a basket for the offering. Whatever idea you choose, use it for the whole year so each child gets to use it. Collect the birth date of each child so you will know in advance when you need to be prepared for birthday time. Collect the offering, light the right number of candles, sing the Birthday song, pray for the child, give a card if possible. 24…Pacific Beginner-Leader Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1

FIND THE DONKEY  Needed - Bible, stand-up donkey from 4th Quarter. Hide the donkey somewhere in the room. Say

Have you ever been to a parade where there are lots of people and everyone is marching?  (Show Bible).  Our Bible story today is about a day when Jesus went to the big city called Jerusalem. It was just like a parade. Everyone wanted to see Jesus. They wanted to praise Him. They waved palm leaves and everyone had a wonderful time. Jesus didn’t walk. He rode on a donkey. We have one hidden the room. Can you find it?

JESUS RODE A DONKEY  Needed - coconut shell clappers. Say

Have you ever seen a horse or a donkey? It’s a bit bumpy when you sit on their back and go for a ride. Their feet make a clip-clop noise when they walk. Can you make a noise with your hands like clip-clop, clip-clop. Listen to the noise when you make it with coconut shells. Let’s go for a little walk as we clap out hands and sing.

MAKE A PATH  Needed - clothing, donkey masks OR large toy donkey. Say

If a king or someone important comes to visit, we lay down special mats for them to walk on. When Jesus rode the donkey, there were no special mats, but the people took off their coats and lay them on the ground for Jesus to ride over. And they picked branches of trees and lay them on the road, too. Give children an item of clothing to put round their shoulders and then place on the floor as you sing. Cut the shape of a donkey from carton box (make it 50 cm tall) and have a child take turns walking it along the “road” OR let them take turns wearing the donkey mask from last Quarter and pretend to be the donkey.

Say

When Jesus saw the city of Jerusalem from the top of a hill, Pacific Beginner-Leader Teacher Guide: Year B Quarter 1…27

He felt sad. He started to cry. Jesus loved the people who lived in the city, but lots of them did not love Him. They would not let Him help them. We are not like that, are we? We don’t want to make Jesus sad. We want Jesus to know we love Him. Jesus is our best Friend. Let’s clap and sing for our Friend, Jesus. Song
