WALKED OFF IN MOTOWN--KC’s road woes continued with a 1-2 stop in Detroit to open post-break play, capped with a 4-2 loss yesterday afternoon...Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off of Joakim Soria to stake the Tigers to the series win and drop the Royals back to eight games behind tonight’s opponent in the A.L. Central standings...Yordano Ventura was solid as the starter, allowing eight hits and two runs, both tallies coming across in odd fashion via a balk and wild pitch...Kansas City plated single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead with RBI hits from Cheslor Cuthbert and Eric Hosmer...Detroit cut the deficit in half when Ventura was called for a two-out balk in the third and then tied the contest when a pitch got away with two-down in the sixth...Kendrys Morales had a pair of hits for KC...Kelvin Herrera tossed a scoreless eighth before Soria opened the ninth allowing a single to Tyler Collins and then the home run to Saltalamacchia to fall to 3-4 on the year. AMONG THE ELITE AT HOME--Tonight opens a season-high nine-game homestand for the Royals, who will look to continue the dominant play in Kauffman Stadium that has KC second in the Majors with a .690 home winning pct. (29-13)...only Baltimore has a better winning pct. at .702 (33-14), while Texas is third at .659 (29-15)...the Chicago Cubs lead the N.L., but are fourth in the Majors at .651 (28-15)... the Royals have gone 16-6 in their last 22 games contested here and dating back to the success in the postseason last fall, Kansas City has gone 36-13 in its last 49 games contested on this field, a .735 winning pct...conversely, KC has scuffled to a .347 (17-32) road winning pct. which is third worst in the Majors and a far cry from a year ago when KC had the second best road mark in the American League and fifth best in the Majors at .543 (44-37).

WHITE HOUSE TO HOST ROYALTY--This Thursday’s off day from playing has turned into yet another spoil of victory as the Royals will have the honor of visiting the White House as President Barack Obama has officially invited the 2015 World Series champs to his residence...the club will travel after Wednesday’s day game against the Indians and then head to the White House mid-morning on Thursday with the official ceremonies slated for 11:50 a.m. (EDT) in the East Room...it marks the second trip in franchise history to the home of the President, with the 1985 club visiting President Ronald Reagan on Halloween. Royals Notes - Cleveland Indians @ Kansas City Royals - Monday, July 18, 2016 This & That DIVISIONAL DUTY--This three-game set with the Tribe is Kansas City’s last work within the A.L. Central until August 9, when the Chicago White Sox hit town and will open a 13-game stretch of intradivisional play...the Royals are 22-13 against the A.L. Central, the second best mark inside this division to Cleveland’s 2812 ledger...the Indians are the only club in the Central that Kansas City does not possess a winning record against, going 4-6, while holding a 6-4 advantage over Detroit, 7-2 vs. the White Sox and 5-1 against the Twins...last season, KC went 44-32 against the Central, en route to their first division crown in 30 years. HOME/ROAD SPLITS--It has been a night and day difference for the Royals when playing here in Kauffman Stadium and on the road during this 2016 season... Kansas City has hit at a .292 clip as a team here in ‘The K’ while scoring 4.9 runs per game and batting .302 with runners in scoring position...at the plate on the road, KC has hit .253, but averaged only 3.2 runs per contest, while hitting a .240 clip in RISP situations...the statistical separation isn’t nearly as dramatic on the hill, with the club posting a 3.93 team ERA while going 29-13 here at home, posting 11 saves in 15 opportunities...on the road, the staff has a 4.43 ERA while going 17-32 and recording 10 saves in 17 tries. LONG YEAR FOR THE LONG BALL--The home run ball reared its ugly head again yesterday with Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s game-ending blast off of Joakim Soria, the 120th allowed by Kansas City pitching this year...KC’s pitchers have been taken deep in 33 of their last 38 games for a total of 66 homers in that span... while the club has given up their share of home runs through the first three-plus months of the 2016 season, the long ball numbers aren’t just up in Kansas City... entering play tonight, there have been 3,162 roundtrippers hit in the Majors, 1,653 allowed by American League hurlers and 1,509 by pitchers in the National League...compared to this date last season, there have been 607 more home runs hit in 2016 than in 2015 when teams combined to hit 2,555 homers through the first two days after the All-Star break. WELCOME BACK, WADER--Wade Davis worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning in a non-save situation in Saturday’s win over the Tigers, returning from a 15-day stint on the disabled list with a right forearm strain...the veteran righty was reinstated earlier in the day, making his first appearance since picking up his 19th save in St. Louis on June 30...selected to the American League All-Star team for the second-straight year, Davis is tied for sixth in the league with 19 saves, while he’s also fifth among A.L. relievers with a 1.19 ERA and ranks sixth among that group, holding the opposition to a .171 batting average...since the start of 2014, Wade is tied for the most wins among Major League relief pitchers (18), while his ERA (1.01), opponents’ batting average (.151) and home runs per 9.0 innings (0.16) are all tops in baseball out of the bullpen. NOT QUITE AT FULL STRENGTH--While All-Star closer Wade Davis was reinstated from the D.L. on Saturday, Kansas City is still on the mend, hoping to have a couple of key players returning soon...on June 28, the Royals lost All-Star center fielder Lorenzo Cain to a left hamstring strain...right-handed starter Kris Medlen was removed from his minor league injury rehab start in the third inning on July 5 with a right shoulder strain and returned to the big league club effectively halting his rehab assignment...Kansas City has already lost All-Star third baseman Mike Moustakas for the season after he underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL, the result of a collision with left fielder Alex Gordon on May 22 in Chicago...that collision also fractured Gordon’s right wrist, costing him a month on the disabled list as well. BULLPEN ON TOP IN A.L.--The Tigers plated a pair of ninth inning runs off the Royals’ pen yesterday, but Kansas City enters tonight still possessing the best overall relief numbers in the American League with a 3.00 ERA...Kansas City trails the Dodgers (2.89) and Washington Nationals (2.95) for the Major League lead, the only two clubs in the big leagues with a sub-3.00 bullpen ERA...the Royals’ eight losses by its bullpen are tied with Baltimore for the fewest in the Majors... KC’s relievers have worked the third-most innings in the A.L. at 308.2. NED POINTING TOWARD 1,000 WINS--The winningest skipper in franchise history, Ned Yost is at .500 at 514-514 after yesterday’s loss...his 971 career victories rank seventh among active managers...he was named to the role on May 13, 2010 and surpassed Whitey Herzog’s previous team mark of 410 wins (1975-79)...Yost’s postseason managerial mark of 22-9 is good for a .710 winning pct., which ranks eighth all-time and is atop the list of managers with at least 20 postseason tilts under their belt...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is seventh among active managers in games (1,987) and 60th on the all-time games managed list, just three behind Chuck Dressen (1,990) and 12 in back of Hall of Famer Red Schoendienst (1,999)...this is Ned’s second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...Yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox’s big league staff (1991-2002). THE DEFENDING CHAMPS--Kansas City opened 2016 as the two-time defending American League Champions, a franchise first, defeating the Mets to win the World Series crown last year after going to a Game #7 in the 2014 Fall Classic before succumbing to the San Francisco Giants...Kansas City’s A.L. title in 2015 was the fourth in franchise history, joining the 1980, ‘85 and 2014...the Royals are coming off a 95-67 regular season and their first American League Central championship, winning the division by 12 games...the last division title won by Kansas City was the 1985 A.L. West, when the club parlayed that triumph into its first World Series title...the 95 wins last year were the most by a KC squad since the 1980 Royals went 97-65...dating back to the start of the 2013 season, Kansas City has a 316-261 record for a .548 winning pct., the best mark in the American League, and fifth most victories in the Majors (behind St. Louis, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh and Washington)...KC has one more win in that span than the second best A.L. club Baltimore (315). vs. Indians (2016)
