TUESDAY IN YANKEES HISTORY Aug. 18, 1990: Acquired by the Yankees just four months prior from the Angels in exchange for Dave Winfield, Mike Witt tosses a two-hit shutout as the Yankees blank the Mariners, 6-0 at Yankee Stadium. Aug. 18, 1989: Bucky Dent replaces Dallas Green as Yankee manager after the club posts a 56-65 record in its first 121 games. YESTERDAY’S NEWS: The Yankees won their third straight game, defeating the Blue Jays, 4-1, at Rogers Centre on Saturday…RHP Masahiro Tanaka (9.0IP, 5H, 1ER, 3BB, 8K) earned the win, tossing his fourth career complete game (first since 6/28/14 vs. Boston) in the longest start by a Yankee this season…RF Carlos Beltran (2-for-3) homered in his second straight game…DH/1B Mark Teixeira (2-for4) homered in the sixth and drove in another run on a sixthinning single…1B Greg Bird (1-for-4) collected the first hit of his Major League career with an eighth-inning single of LaTroy Hawkins. LF Brett Gardner (0-for-5) stole second base in the ninth inning, the first SB by a Yankee since 7/24 (Mark Teixeira)…snapped a 19-game stretch without a stolen base for the club, their longest since a 20-game stretch in August 1963 (credit: Elias). HOPE WEEK 2015 (August 17-21): This year marks the seventh annual HOPE Week (Helping Others Persevere & Excel), an initiative rooted in the belief that acts of good will provide hope and encouragement to more than just the recipient of the gesture…each day during the five days of HOPE Week, the Yankees will reach out to an individual, family or organization worthy of recognition and support…activities and outreach in the community is always coupled with recognition at Yankee Stadium during a Yankees game. On Monday morning (8/17), Dellin Betances, Brett Gardner and Alex Rodriguez are scheduled to appear on NBC’s TODAY Show to officially kick off this year’s initiative.  



BACK TO SCHOOL: As part of 2015 HOPE Week, the Yankees will host a school supplies drive at Yankee Stadium prior to their Wed., 8/19 game vs. Minnesota (1:05 p.m. first pitch). Starting around 11:00 a.m., Yankees players will help collect donations outside the Gate 6 entrance. Fans are asked to donate new or gently used school supplies, with all items to be given to students from a nearby Bronx elementary school. Fans who make a donation will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win assorted Yankees prizes.
