Montreux, Switzerland 10 - 12 October 2016 The beautiful town of Montreux, overlooking Lake Geneva, will provide a perfect setting for the world hydro community, policy-makers and practitioners, to meet next year to discuss topical aspects of global hydropower development. There will be opportunities to visit major projects under construction in the region. Papers are now invited, on a broad range of topics, for the conference programme.

SWITZERLAND AS HYDRO 2016 HOST COUNTRY SWITZERLAND AND HYDROPOWER With 33 hydro and pumped-storage schemes under construction (at both new and major upgrade projects), which will provide more than 2100 MW of new capacity, Switzerland is one of Europe’s most active countries for hydro development at present. It is also one of the continent’s original major hydropower developers, having based much of its industrial development on exploitation of its hydro resources during the 1950s. Today hydropower produces about 60 per cent of Swiss electricity. Western Switzerland is a major centre of activity today, with schemes such as the major Nant de Drance pumped-storage scheme under way, which will have a final installed capacity of 900 MW. The Swiss Government (through the Federal Office of Energy) is promoting the future use of hydropower through a variety of measures, as part of its ‘Renewable energy action plan’. As well as new developments, existing plants are being renovated and expanded, taking related ecological requirements into account. There is a target to increase production by at least 2000 GWh/year through these measures. Swiss utilities, academic institutes, professional associations and industrial companies have expressed strong support for HYDRO 2016, and are waiting to welcome the international hydropower community, and to share their long-term experience of hydro development.

INTERNATIONAL NETWORKING As usual this event will be a major opportunity for networking, with at least 1500 participants expected to attend from more than 80 countries. Much emphasis will be on accelerating hydro projects in the less developed countries, as well as maximizing the benefits of existing hydro assets, addressing new challenges such as climate issues, and encouraging young people as the hydro engineers of the future.

MONTREUX AND THE RIVIERA As a result of its mild micro-climate, the Montreux-Vevey region has become known as the Montreux Riviera. HYDRO 2016 will take place against a background of stunning scenery, including vineyards, mountains, and medieval buildings. The conference and exhibition will take place in the modern and spacious 2m2c Congress Centre, overlooking Lake Leeman, which is also home to the world famous Montreux Jazz Festival in the summer. The centre, with a total area of 18 000 m2 and equipped with state-of-the-art technology, has a flexible layout and a total of 23 modular meeting rooms, all offering panoramic views of the lake and the Alps.

ACCESS AND REGIONAL TRANSPORT The nearest airport to Montreux is Geneva, which has direct flights from 120 cities. From Geneva, the journey by train takes approximately one hour by train, coach or car, with much of the route offering spectacular views of the lake. Zurich airport, with direct flights from 150 cities, is 2.5 hours from Montreux by train. All HYDRO 2016 registered participants will receive a complimentary ‘Montreux Riviera Card’ allowing free use of all local public transportation in the area.

ACCOMMODATION Hotel rooms have been reserved for delegates in a wide range of hotels, from luxury to budget categories. Student accommodation can also be arranged. In Montreux, the selected hotels are all within easy walking distance of the 2m2c congress centre. Hotel rooms are also available in nearby Vevey, which is just a few minutes away by tram or bus (Montreux Riviera Cards will allow for free travel on this journey). Hotel room bookings will be handled this year by a local booking centre in Montreux, and full details will announced at the time of registration.

TOUR OPPORTUNITIES Accompanying persons attending HYDRO 2016 will have opportunities to participate in tours to some of the most scenic parts of Europe, in the Montreux-Geneva region, over three days. Technical tours to some of Switzerland’s existing current major hydro schemes are also being planned, in collaboration with the Swiss National Committee of ICOLD and local power authorities. There are provisional plans to arrange visits to: the site of the Nant de Drance pumpedstorage scheme; the Hongrin double curvature arch dam, where a new pumped-storage project is planned (Hongrin-Léman-Veytaux); Grande Dixence, the world’s highest gravity dam; and a variety of large and small hydro schemes. Visits are also planned to EPFL’s Laboratory of Hydraulic Construction and Laboratory of Hydraulic Machines in Lausanne, and to Mhylab in nearby Montcherand.

SOCIAL PROGRAMME A full social programme will be arranged, as always, including a Welcome Cocktail party, a Networking Reception in the Exhibition, and a Conference Dinner. In view of the venue, there will be no shortage of music!

SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS Abstracts of up to 800 words, in English, are now invited on the themes listed or related topics. Please email abstracts to the address below. A short CV of each author should be included. Your abstract should summarize precisely the scope and content of the paper proposed. In the case of any project described, please mention its current status . Please email the abstract as a Word file, using the author’s name as the file name. Please suggest the theme for which your paper would be best suited. CONFIRMING ATTENDANCE TO PRESENT ACCEPTED PAPERS Please note that abstracts should only be submitted if the author would be able to attend the conference (or send a representative). Please obtain any necessary clearance, and check your availability to attend, before submitting the abstract. If your paper is accepted, you will be asked to sign a form confirming willingness to attend; it is essential that we receive this undertaking before allocating time for an oral presentation. Please remember, if your paper is accepted and you do not attend without good reason, you are depriving someone else of an opportunity to present their work. Speakers will be eligible for greatly reduced registration fees, which will include meals and social events during the conference. In the case of speakers from the less developed countries, in some exceptional circumstances we may be able to secure financial support to cover fees, but it is essential that we know this at the time when the abstract is submitted.

KEY DATES The deadline for receipt of abstracts is 22 February 2016. Authors will be notified by the end of May 2016 whether or not their paper has been accepted for presentation, or for publication in the Proceedings. Abstracts will generally be reviewed by two or more experts on our International Steering Committee, and you may be asked to modify some aspects of your proposed paper. As this review process takes some time, we urge you to submit abstracts promptly (if possible well before the final deadline). Full papers will be required by 8 August 2016, and format guidelines will be sent to all authors whose papers are accepted. Papers will be required in both Word and PDF format. We reserve the right to reject papers which do not correspond with the original abstract accepted, or which are not prepared in accordance with the format guidelines. Full details of theprogramme, information about the excursions, accommodation and registration fees, will be published in the Final Bulletin, at the end of June 2016. Regular updates will also be sent in PDF format.
