2ND INTERNATIONAL FORUM on VACUUM DIE CASTING 3

Ladies, Gentlemen, Friends and Colleagues, These are exciting times for the die casting industry. With a new generation of high-end automotive aluminum components, known to us as structural parts, there is no better time to be part of the vacuum die casting family. Some 68 years ago, FONDAREX was established as a small foundry right here in Territet on the Montreux Riviera. The invention of vacuum die casting in 1952, and the company’s intense will to innovate, have positioned FONDAREX as a pioneer in our industry and underpinned its role as the market leader in its field. Vacuum technology has not only allowed the industry to cast better but has also generated potentials for casting smarter. Concerns over gas consumption and weight reduction in the automotive industry have led to a need for novel components designs. Consequently, FONDAREX is delighted to dedicate this second edition of its triennial International Forum on Vacuum Die Casting entirely to Structural Parts. It is our pleasure to reunite the industry’s leading players and our honor to introduce among our Forum speakers: innovative car makers, foundries, an aluminum producer, die makers, and die casting machine manufacturers. This is a unique opportunity to share know-how, foster cooperation within the industry and to drive our technologies forward into the future.

The Era of Structural Parts With the latest drive from the automobile industry aimed at replacing structural steel parts with light metal alloys, the die casting industry is now faced with the formidable challenge of identifying appropriate methods and equipment to produce structural parts that satisfy the quality and specifications requested by its customers.

Sincerely yours,

Structural parts typically have complex geometries, are compact and thinwalled. Moreover, they must be heat treatable, weld-capable and ductile. These uncompromising parameters require a stable and cost-effective casting process featuring optimal die design, an ideally matched die casting machine, adequate peripherals, as well as the proper alloy. The indisputable challenge when producing structural parts is to accurately fill the cavity, in particular when long, thin flow paths are involved, within a short filling time, and with the best possible vacuum value.

Konrad Baumgartner President FONDAREX SA

FONDAREX is proud to lead this new industrial endeavor with the Highvac line of vacuum systems providing unparalleled air evacuation and process control.

I look forward to welcoming you here on the Montreux Riviera for this exceptional forum.

2ND INTERNATIONAL FORUM on VACUUM DIE CASTING 7

Claude Nicollier Between Sky and Earth Born here in Vevey in 1944, Claude Nicollier has a unique experience with vacuum; that of outer space. Selected by the European Space Agency in July 1978 in the first batch of European astronauts, he joined the NASA candidate program in 1980. He has participated in four space shuttle missions, spent more than a thousand hours in orbit and performed an extra-vehicular activity; known to us as a spacewalk. Now retired, he remains active in the field both as an EPFL professor at the Swiss Space Center and chairman of Swiss Space Systems. So what better person to represent Switzerland, vacuum and high tech than the man who has virtually touched the stars. Claude Nicollier, the sole Swiss astronaut, to inspire us to always look beyond.
