Student Poster Presentations MassMin 2016 will host a variety of student poster presentations amongst the trade exhibition. This is an opportunity for students to display their work to the international resources community and showcases Australia’s innovative approach to the sector. Posters will be on display for the duration of the event for you to view at your leisure. We encourage you to view the posters and chat with the student authors about their work whilst at the conference. The posters will be judged at the conference by an expert panel with a winning poster announced during the conference. Details for the posters will be printed in the conference proceedings and included on the conference website.

Conference Workshop Program W1: Cave Establishment

W2: Managing Geohazards in Cave Mining

Saturday 7 May

Sunday 8 May

The activities associated with establishing a new cave level have a significant impact on the future performance of the extraction level. These activities include undercutting, development of the extraction and drawbell drives, drawbell firing and the installation of permanent services. In more recent times the activity of preconditioning using either hydraulic fracturing, confined blasting or a combination of these has been added by some to the overall cave establishment process. The design and sequencing of these activities is often set to manage the geotechnical conditions associated with pillar stability and stress management though they are crucial to the safety of personnel and the ramp-up and financial returns of the new cave.

Since the invention of the cave mining method in the late 1800s, knowledge of risk factors in cave mining has increased significantly. Significant operational hazards in caving mines include major excavation collapses, rock bursts, air blasts, and mud, water and slurry inflows. Many of these core risks relate to geotechnical unknowns or variability, the adequacy of geotechnical data, and the reliability of analytical methods to forecast caving behaviour.

As part of its research activities, Mass Mining Technology (MMT) runs workshops in areas of importance to the cave mining industry. Normally such workshops are run in conjunction with the MMT six monthly review meetings. MassMin 2016 is an opportunity for MMT sponsors together with the rest of the cave mining industry to hold a workshop on cave establishment, which arguably is one of the main challenges in cave mining regardless of scale. The full-day workshop will be run as a number of interactive Q&A sessions covering all aspects of cave establishment lead by invited industry representatives. The invited panelists will have recent experience in caves developed since the last MassMin conferences e.g. 2004, 2008 and 2012 allowing the latest thoughts and experiences to be shared with the group. Course facilitators: Glenn Sharrock MAusIMM(CP), Itasca Gideon Chitombo MAusIMM, Bryan Mining and Geology Research Centre

In this workshop, experienced practitioners present key learnings and case studies on six key geotechnical risks impacting on safety and production in caving mines. Course presenters: G ideon Chitombo MAusIMM Glenn Sharrock MAusIMM(CP) Matt Pierce MAusIMM Iain Ross MAusIMM Tony Webster FAusIMM(CP) Jarek Jakubec Jared DeRoss Cost:

W3: Monitoring and Modelling the Seismic Rock Mass Response to Sub-level and Block Cave Mining

W4: Physical and Numerical Modelling of Caving Mechanics

Sunday 8 May

Thursday 12 May

Passive microseismic monitoring is used routinely at nearly all the major caving mines around the world to track cave growth, both for reasons related to production (eg cave growing out of the ore zone) and safety (cave stall with continuing production leads to a risk of air blast). However, the large cave filled with broken rock results in a complex environment for routine microseismic monitoring. This course will cover the current best practice of seismic monitoring of cave front evolution, as well as some recent advances: active seismic monitoring, integration of geology, mining, seismicity and numerical stress modelling, and monitoring of in-situ stress changes by ambient seismic noise (the SCAN technique).

This workshop is hosted by the Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG). This one-day workshop will bring together industry experts to discuss this important topic.

Course presenters: Dr Richard Lynch, Managing Director and Head of Rock Physics, Institute of Mine Seismology Dr Gerrit Olivier, Head of Applied Geophysics, Institute of Mine Seismology Mr Stephen Meyer, Senior Mine Seismologist, Institute of Mine Seismology Cost:
