Downloading E-books for Kindle Before downloading an e-book for Kindle, you will need the following: 

Your Kindle



Your library card (if you do not have your library card, call the library at 724-449-2665)



Your USB cable (if you do not have wifi Internet)



Computer



Amazon account

Getting started: 1. On a computer, go to the library website: http://www.northerntierlibrary.org 2. Click on the “EBOOKS” link

3. Click the link to “Sign In”

Downloading E-books for Kindle Getting started (continued): 4. Type your library card number in the text box and click the “Sign In” button Now you’re ready to find a book to download! In the Search text box, you can type an author or the title of a book to search for a specific book. You can also browse for available books by using the “Advanced Search” feature. Below are instructions on how to search for available books.

Searching for a book: 5. Click the “Advanced Search” link

6. Choose a subject from the “All Subjects” menu (example: Fiction or Biography)

8. Click the box next to where it says “Only titles with copies available” 9. Then click the “Search” button

Downloading E-books for Kindle Searching for a book (continued): 10.A list of books will display. You can look through the pages of books by clicking the arrows forward and backward. 11.When you find a book you would like to read, click on the cover of the book.

Downloading E-books for Kindle Downloading an e-book: 12. Click the “Borrow” button to borrow the book from the library.

13. Click the “Download” button. 14.When a drop-down menu appears, click the box next to “Kindle Book” format then click “Confirm & Download”

Downloading E-books for Kindle Downloading an e-book (continued): 15. You will be directed to the Amazon website. Click the “Get library book” button to download the book to your Kindle

16. If you are not already signed in, the website will ask you to sign in. Enter your email address and password for Amazon. 17. When asked to “choose a Kindle device or reading app for delivery of your title” choose your Kindle and click the “Continue” button. Your book will deliver to your Kindle. Enjoy reading your e-book on your Kindle!

If the book does not deliver to your Kindle, you will need to download the book to the computer and transfer it to your Kindle with your USB cable. See the following page for instructions on how to download and transfer with a USB cable.

Downloading E-books for Kindle How to download an e-book and transfer to your Kindle with USB cable: If you are not connected to WiFi, you can transfer the e-book using your USB cable. 1. On the Amazon website where you were downloading the book and click the “Download now” button

2. A pop-up window should appear, asking you to save the file. Click “Save” If the pop-up window does not appear, follow the directions on the screen.

Another pop-up window will appear, asking if you want to “Open” the file or “Open folder,” click “Open folder” 4. Plug your USB cable into your Kindle and your computer 5. When a pop-up window appears, asking if you want to open the Kindle folder and view the files, click “Open.” A folder will open. You should now have open: a folder with the e-book file, the Kindle folder, and the amazon website. 6. Drag the folder with the e-book to one side of your desktop and drag the Kindle folder to the other side

Downloading E-books for Kindle How to download an e-book and transfer to your Kindle with USB cable (continued): 10. Click and hold on the e-book file. Drag it to the “documents” folder inside the Kindle folder. A plus sign may appear when you have dragged the e-book to the “documents” folder.

Your e-book has now been transferred to your Kindle. Unplug your Kindle to read your e-book.

When you have finished reading the e-book or if you no longer want the e-book, you may return it early. See the following page for instructions on how to return a Kindle e-book early.

Downloading E-books for Kindle How to return an e-book early: 1. On a computer, go to Amazon.com and log in to your account. 2. Click the “Manage Your Kindle” link

3. Find the e-book you want to return in the list of books you’ve borrowed and read.

4. Click the “Actions” button. A drop-down menu will appear.

Downloading E-books for Kindle How to return an e-book early (continued): 5. Click where it says “Return this book”

6. A pop-up message will appear. Click “Yes” to confirm that you want to return the e-book 7. After you have returned the e-book, the book will remain in your “Manage Your Kindle” list. The book will now have a “loan expired” notice to let you know that the book has been returned.

If you would like to download the book again, or to download another book, return to Overdrive to download an e-book.

Downloading E-books for Kindle How to place an e-book on hold: 1. If you search for a book and it is not available, when you click to download the book, it will say “Place a Hold” instead of “Borrow”

2. Click the “Place a Hold” button. Enter your email address and click the “Place a Hold” button to confirm.

You have placed a hold on an e-book. When the e-book becomes available, you will receive an email. You will have three days to borrow the book. If you do not borrow the book in that three day window, the hold will be released to the next patron in line.
