17th Sunday in Ordinary Time: Today’s Gospel parable speaks to generosity. In the deep of night, a sleepy friend responds to his neighbor’s request for food for an unexpected guest. Jesus suggests that it would be unthinkable that a friend would deny a friend in need. A friend would most certainly give what is asked and more. Through this story, Jesus illustrates God’s generosity. Good stewards realize the extraordinary love and graciousness with which God showers us. We need never convince God to be generous. God is already that generous friend. His abundant love bathes us in goodness. This week, prayerfully reflect on God’s generosity and what our response should be to that generosity.

Father Mark Mallak Associate Pastor, Holy Family Area Catholic Community

My name is Fr. Mark Sylvester Mallak, and I am 54 years old and ordained a priest 28 years. I am the second of six children, my other siblings being Mary, Joanne, Tom, Steve and Brian. My dad comes from a farm north of Silver Lake MN and my mom from a farm west of Winsted. When they married, they moved to Lester Prairie where my dad worked in construction for Lester’s Inc. All of us children were born in the Glencoe hospital. When I was 12 our family moved to New Ulm, where we all graduated from Cathedral Catholic High School. I entered Saint John Vianney College Seminary at the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul MN, and graduated after four years with a BA degree in Philosophy with a concentration in Mathematics. I was then sent to the Pontifical North American College in Rome, Italy for major seminary. During my time in Rome I completed a STL degree in Moral Theology. I was ordained a transitional deacon on April 14, 1988 at Saint Peter Basilica in the Vatican, and then ordained a priest in New Ulm on June 25, 1988. In my years of priesthood, I have been in the parishes of Sleepy Eye, Leavenworth-Comfrey, Litchfield, New Ulm (Holy Trinity Cathedral), Morgan, Springfield-Lamberton, and most recently in OliviaRenville-Hector-Bird Island. I also spent 6 years working at the Vatican and pursuing a JCL degree in Canon Law in the early 1990s. I have stepped away from ministry on two occasions to get help with my depression and anxiety, and to confront a drinking problem. It takes work, rest, counseling and medication to keep me on a good balance in my life and ministry. It is good for me to be in a ministerial assignment where I can focus on more of the pastoral duties and let another priest be involved in more of the administrative tasks. Twelve years ago our family lost our brother Tom to a sudden heart condition; he left behind a wife, Nancy, and two young children, Edward and Katharine. Mom and Dad are living in retirement in New Ulm, and all of the other siblings and families are living in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area. I have 11 nieces and nephews (ranging in age from 25 to 10), and when the entire family is together we number 25. My oldest niece Justine recently announced her engagement, so the family will grow again. As I share this information with you, I want to state that I am pleased to be ministering in your midst, and I look forward to coming to know some information from you and your life story, also! Blessings, FrMM
