Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

January 29, 2017

Our Parish Mission Statement Transfiguration Parish is a people called to build a Catholic Faith Community by seeking Christ and sharing His Gospel through Prayer, Education, Service and Social Activities. Pope Francis @Pontifex

The unity of love is realized when we announce together the wonders God has done for us. TRANSFIGURATION PARISH — 348 MILL STREET — WAUCONDA, ILLINOIS 60084 — PHONE: 847-526-2400

Pastor’s Column Who are the meek? They are those who have harnessed their talents and abilities to serve God’s interests, not their own interests. They find happiness in serving others. The hungry and thirsty? They continually seek a better, deeper, and richer relationship with God. They hunger for a better world in which we care for each other. The merciful? They are centered on others. They are willing to forgive and to seek reconciliation.

THE BEATITUDES ARE IDEALS TO BE WRITTEN ON OUR HEARTS AND EXPRESSED IN OUR ACTIONS. It is no accident that Jesus presented his beatitudes on a mountain. God delivered the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. Those commandments were laws written on stone tablets. Jesus’ beatitudes are ideals that are to be written on human hearts. Jesus did not overturn the laws of Moses. But with the beatitudes, Jesus wanted to shift the focus from external laws to be obeyed to laws of love to be lived in the kingdom he came to reveal. The beatitudes turn this world’s standards upside down. Happiness in being poor in spirit? “Nonsense!” the worldly tell us. The road to happiness is found in aggressiveness, ambition and success in competition.

Now in contrast, Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was a famous German philosopher from the nineteenth century who was instrumental in shaping the Contemporary-men’s philosophy that the fittest should rise to the top, and those at the bottom should be dismissed from living. He also believed that God was dead. Nietzsche’s view is still the rallying cry of many atheists who proclaim that God does not exist, or is irrelevant to our world today. This modern perspective dismisses Christian practice and belief. But Saint Paul reminds us that when we put our faith in Christ, we cannot be deterred. As we heard in today’s reading: God chose the foolish of the world to shame the wise, and God chose the weak of the world to shame the strong, and God chose the lowly and despised of the world, those who count for nothing, to reduce to nothing those who are something.

Happiness, Jesus tells us, is given to us by God. We don’t win it, achieve it, merit it or buy it. Everyone can have it. When it comes to happiness, everyone can be a winner. Happiness and fulfillment, Jesus teaches, will come to people with open hands, humble hearts and receptive spirits. The kingdom is God’s gift; it’s not ours to fashion as we wish.

The Christian belief is that Christ is our redemption and our justification, and that living a life modeled on the beatitudes leads to happiness and fulfillment. That belief is now two thousand years old, and is still strongly held by more than two billion people. Nietzsche is very much dead, and God is quite alive in this world because of those who believe in Jesus Christ and strive to live the message of the beatitudes.

Blessedness for the sorrowing? The poor? The meek? The persecuted? You won’t find them on TV talk shows.

“REJOICE AND BE GLAD, FOR YOUR REWARD WILL BE GREAT IN HEAVEN." Matthew 5, 12

OFRENDA SEMANAL OFIARA TYGODNIOWA

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3 This one confuses people. Replace the word “humble” for “poor” and it makes more sense. People that are humble recognize their dependence on God and trust that He will provide all that they need. Unfortunately, for many of us, pride and ego enters our lives and we think we can live without God. Remember – God first in all circumstances. "Bienaventurados los pobres de espíritu, porque de ellos es el reino de los cielos." Mateo 5;3

YEAR-TO-DATE BUDGET THIS YEAR:

Ten wers myli wielu. Zastąpiwszy słowo "ubodzy" na "pokorni", czyni go bardziej zrozumiałym.

These donations are used to cover the cost of PADS meals for the entire year. Souper Bowl of Caring kettles will be at the church exits the weekend of as you leave mass next weekend. Your donations help to do God’s work by nourishing those who need it most in our area. 9. Due to scheduling conflicts the Bereavement Training that was scheduled for January 31 has been postponed. A new date of February 14 has been reserved - tentative time 2 pm in the Parish Office Meeting Rooms. Our Bereavement Ministry is a source of love, consolation and prayerful support to those parishioners who grieve the loss of a loved one. There are a number of ways you can participate as a Bereavement Minister. If you would like to find out more information and/or sign up for the training, please contact Kathie Blaszak in the Parish Office 847-526-2400 x245 or email [email protected]. We welcome your interest.

Pray for Vocations

OREMOS POR LAS VOCACIONES Módlmy się o powołania

Lord, Jesus we ask you to send more servants to your people. Choose from our parishes, from our homes, from our schools and colleges, an abundant harvest of apostles for your Kingdom: priests, sisters, brothers, deacons and lay ministers. We pray that those you call may never lose awareness of the dignity and need of their vocation. O Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, teach to all those the Master calls to say a joyful “yes” as you did at the Annunciation. Amen.

www.chicagopriest.com

Amen.

Panie Jezu, prosimy Cię, abyś wysłał więcej sług do swojego ludu. Wybierz z naszych parafii, z naszych szkół i uczelni, obfite żniwo apostołów dla Twego Królestwa: kapłanów, siostry zakonne, braci, diakonów i świeckich szafarzy. Amen.
