Frank Schwieger Me, Zeus and the Olympic Gang Gods and heroes from Greek Mythology

Here, the Olympians and Heroes take the matter into their own hands–from Achilles to Zeus. So readers discover at first-hand why Achilles, the greatest hero of them all, runs around in girl’s clothes and why Apollo is such a tree-hugger; what beauty queen Aphrodite and a golden apple have to do with the Trojan War; why Ariadne is known as the cry-baby of Naxos—and of course what part Big Boss Zeus plays in all this.

Twenty-four episodes from the lives of the greatest Greek heroes and heroines, gods and goddesses–straight from the Trojan Horse‘s mouth! Each story is complemented by a wittily illustrated profile of the starring character, detailing their family connections, their likes and dislikes and distinguishing features.

A perfect blend of girls’ graphic novel and crime thriller

ENGLPISLH SAM TEION A TR ANVASILLAABLE

Volume 1 was the first children's book to win the prestigious Hans-Jörg-Martin-Prize for Crime Fiction

When Penny and her gang of detectives hear about the disappearing Christmas trees, they initially put it down to coincidence. But it soon becomes clear: this is the work of a serial offender. One tree farm is burned to the ground, another is afflicted by a peculiar disease, deliveries disappear and the last of the Christmas pines are stolen from balconies.

© Mary Grace Long

As far as Penny and her crew are concerned this is totally unacceptable and it’s high time to take action. Christmas without a tree is—well, it’s just not Christmas! So the girls set an ambush and soon find themselves hot on the trail...

Can love really conquer all? As Joyce gets to know Elias, a young refugee from Ethiopia, the unexpected happens: fascinated by his ethereal beauty and enigmatic nature, she falls head over heels in love with him. But despite all the wonderful moments they share, the relationship is fraught with difficulty. Time and again, Joyce is bewildered by Elias’s abrupt transitions between exuberance and deep depression. Often she has no idea how all the misunderstandings between them come about. Is it because he’s from a different culture? Is it because he’s a refugee? Should they even be together at all?

Kadir is sixteen; German, Turkish, an exceptionally gifted football player—and an IS warrior Kadir is standing in front of the packed football stadium in Hamburg’s St Pauli district. His sports bag at his feet, his hand raised clutching a cellphone, he shouts Allah Akbar! God is great. Is Kadir about to blow himself and hundreds of innocent people to kingdom come? Mark, best friend and fellow footballer, tells us how it came to this, from Kadir’s radicalisation through his “brethren” from the culture club to the day of his abrupt disappearance from Hamburg. It’s not until much later that Mark discovers the truth: Kadir has been in Syria. We see him side by side with IS fighters; we witness his everyday life in Syria, caught between boredom, violence and a semi-permanent state of shock. But now Kadir is back in Hamburg— having made the disastrous decision to die as a martyr.

Klett Kinderbuch 72 pages With 4c-illustrations by Marine Ludin

You can’t get friends in the supermarket Eight-year-old Meret is looking for a new friend—a girl with really bright ideas who likes to think things through, a girl who knows a whole lot about life. Someone she can lie in a meadow with at night, staring up at the moon while they listen to the mice snoring in the grass like she’s only ever been able to do with Mamilli—her grandaunt; someone worldly-wise, just like Meret herself. But it’s easier said than done. So Meret decides to draw up a list of everyone worth considering: the result is a choice between five girls (and two boys for emergency use only!) The name at the very bottom of the list is Annabell— aka “the Princess”. Annabell is small and given to crying a lot. She’s not really Meret’s cup of tea at all. But when Annabell falls ill and Meret brings her homework to her house, the two girls discover that they have more in common than they thought.

PETRA FIETZEK was born in 1955. She studied German, art history and philosophy in Cologne and has been a full-time freelance author since 1985. She writes for adults, children and young readers, works for radio, runs creative writing seminars and is also a reading group therapist. She lives in a house surrounded by a big garden in the picturesque North-Rhine Westphalian town of Coesfeld.

Franziska Gehm A Comfort Break in the Valley of the Clueless Klett Kinderbuch 256 pages With b/w-vignettes by Horst Klein

Jobst and his mother were travelling home from their mediaeval holiday and only intended to stop in 1986 for a toilet break. But then the case that holds their time machine disappears into thin air and they find themselves stuck in the middle of East Germany! Jobst has only heard rumours about the GDR, a country where children are referred to as pioneers, where there’s no tropical fruit and the grocery shops only offer what’s in season locally. There’s no way the two of them can get home without their time machine, so of course they get involved in all kinds of exciting adventures—including a rather unfortunate encounter with the Chairman of the State Council.

FRANZISKA GEHM studied English, psychology and intercultural economic communication. After completing her studies she taught at a grammar school, worked for a radio station and as an editor of children’s books. She now lives in Munich where she works as a freelance author, translator and editor.

Today’s youngsters have little or no idea of what it felt like growing up in the GDR. This book describes childhood in East Germany—not as a dull litany of facts, but as an authentic, action-packed adventure full of humour.
