The new HVU series has a universal milling head which was especially designed for matec and makes the HVU ultra flexible.

Machine concept HVU series The universal machining centers matec-30 HVU, matec-40 HVU and matec-50 HVU are based on the machining centers matec-30 HV, matec-40 HV and matec-50 HV.

Universal milling head and variable traveling paths The HVU machines have a universal milling head with 2 axes, which turns the motor spindle in a 45° diagonal position from vertical to horizontal. This allows the maching of long workpieces on four sides in connection with an integrated rotary table even on five sides. In that case 6 axes are at disposal for demanding machining tasks on a workpiece. The HVU-series is available in two versions: matec-30 HVU with taper SK40/HSK 63A and matec-40 resp. 50 HVU with taper SK50/HSK 100.

The traveling column series - here the L-machines with vertical spindle - has been conceived for single-part and series production. Whether used for twin table machining with rotary table or tail stock, multiple clamping or single-part manufacturing of voluminous parts, this machine group covers nearly all fields of application. Stability, precision and high speed are characteristics of these machines. Outstanding features of the traveling column series are long traverse paths, horizontally and vertically swiveling machine spindles, easy mounting of clamping units as well as automatic loading by means of external loading systems.

The machining center matec-30 L duo is a longbed machine with two traveling columns. This concept allows various machining strategies: for one thing, the double spindle machining of identical parts with tooling correction in 2 x 3 axes; for another thing, the independent simultaneous machining of one work part by means of both spindles. Integrated turning spindles, vertical or horizontal, transform matec-30 L duo into a double spindle milling/turning center.

The traveling column series has been conceived for single-part and series production. Turning and milling in one machine Each HV machine can be turned into a milling/turning center for series production. The traveling column machines are ideally suited for the machining of long, bulky workpieces in one clamping. Large machine tables allow multiple clamping or twintable machining. While the traveling column is machining one or more workpieces in the first working area, raw parts can be set up in the second working area during processing time. The possibilities of the HV machines for the machining of 5 sides or 3D of any kind of work parts are almost unlimited. The long X-axis and a swivel head tilting 105° continuously to both sides, with SK or HSK tapers, in combination with a variety of CNC rotary tables make these machines infinitely flexible.

Milling/turning centers

Milling and turning in one machine Most machining centers of the traveling column series can be additionally equipped with a lathe spindle or high-speed rotary table with direct drive. In connection with a CNC swivel head we have developed a universal milling/turning center especially for supplier companies in single-part and small-part production.

Economical manufacturing of complex parts Complex parts can be machined economically on such machines in one or two clampings in demanded tolerance and surface quality. Designed correspondingly our machines allow controlled boring of even the inner contours in slant borings. The advantage is evident: two machining processes united in one machine – the work part machined either on the face or on the perimeter and in every angular position – that saves time and costs. On the basis of the modular system matec offers a wide range of various options to satisfy every customer’s need. matec-30 HVT and matec-30 HVTH are especially designed as milling/turning centers. matec-30 HVT is a milling/turning center for series production. If work parts are best manufactured by complete machining this can be done on the matec-30 HVT in max. two clampings.

matec-30 HVTH is a machining center with a rotary table and opposed spindle for complete machining (front and back sides) of work parts from a bar in singlepart or series production with a loading and unloading automation unit. Lathe spindles A8 or A 11.

The vertical lathe spindles (Ø 300 up to 2200 mm) are able to turn and to position depending on the machining task. Speed of lathe spindle from 100 up to 6000 rpm (depending on spindle type and turning device) The swivel head +/- 90° with serration catching in steps of 1°, option: continuously variable), provides for five-side machining during drilling and milling processes and during the turning process it allows the application of multifunctional lathe tools in all angles. The machine is equipped with a separate tool magazine for lathe tools.

The range of forms machined on matec-30 HVTH extends from profiles, round material, square and rectangular cross-sections up to diagonals of 120 mm. The loading of the machine erfolgt über einen bar feeder. Optionally with 2-axis saw unit to crosscut the parts from the bar. Work-piece discharge is handled by NC-gripper or a robot.

Exhibit Gear cutting on a general-purpose machine All traveling column machining centers of the HV-series can additionally be equipped with a hobbing module. This module can be used for straight and helical gearing as well as for worm-shaped gearing. The extremely rugged HV machines are perfecty fit for this kind of application. Gears up to 2 m in diameter can be manufactured in single and series production. Equipped with an integrated rotary table the HV machines are ideally suited for the machining of flat gears; for the gearing of long shafts the machines are fitted with a horizontally mounted rotary table with tailstock. The economic advantage is obvious: The HV machines can still be used for milling and turning (equipped with a rotary table with direct drive).

The universal machining center matec-30 HVK is the perfect solution for complex machining tasks in three dimensional domain and 5-side machining. The longer Z-axis extends the machinable range of work parts in the height. Work parts with a swing diameter of up to 940 mm can be loaded on the rotary table. The machine is also available as milling /turning center.

The matec swivel table series has been developed for series production if high stock-removing capacity is required. Stability, precision and high speed are characteristics of these machines. A 180° swivel table is a part of every basic machine. It facilitates a quick tool change and renders high productivity. matec “tailor made” system with its comprehensive range of products implies a multitude of machine concepts which provide optimal solutions for every customer and secure a considerable competitive advantage. The basic machine matec-30 S is available in two sizes covering the whole spectrum of parts’ dimensions for series production. The SH type is an especially compact and flexible machine with little place requirement, the SD machine with double spindle is particularly suitable for machining of most challenging and voluminous work parts and the SHV design with angle head fits best for horizontal and vertical machining of 5 sides and three-dimensional machining also in the large-scale production. HTK, Austria

With unusual concepts on the road to success Whatever the differences between Austrian job order supplier HTK and matec may be, they have at least one thing in common: their uncompromising customer orientation. Therefore it’s not amazing, that the two companies have developed a close supplier/customer relationship. Karl Hüttmannsberger, founder and CEO of HTK Maschinen- und Apparatebau GmbH, started his way into self-employment with a vision. The company in which he had been employed for a couple of years – his last position there was technical manager - had specialized on conventional job order production. For Karl Hüttmannsberger there was nothing to be said against this, but he didn’t really consider it promising. He was convinced, that there were other, more successful business philosophies.

Future-oriented all-round solutions His idea was to give the customer more than just „products“. His vision was a corporate concept, in which the customer was not only supplied with parts, but with all-round solutions. But the company’s management didn’t go along with his ideas, so in 1995 he decided to start his own business. Quite a risk, because in the initially rented premises he owned just a few conventional machines. He reinvested proceeds in a CNC machine. In those days – how else could it have been –when buying a machine the price was the main argument. So Hüttmannsberger settled on a machine from Taiwan, but already put the emphasis on relatively long traveling paths. His belief was then and still is: „On a large-scale machine you can machine small parts as well – it’s not possible to do it the other way round.“ With longer traveling paths he held a joker: Where bigger parts are concerned there are not only less competitiors, but also more demanding machinig tasks and here his concept of a cooperation with customers catches. In the bis parts sector customers accept the offer of a comprehensive solution from engineering to manufacturing much more readily than in the manufacturing of small parts.

Quality of products determines long-ranging success Karl Hüttmannsberger knew that he had to invest in highly productive, state-of-the-art machinery fast, in order to secure the initial success in the long run. And he went beyond that: „From the beginning we placed our emphasis on apprenticeship. Today our staff consists almost exclusively of employees which had their job training in our company. This is an invaluable advantage for us, because in the long run the competence and know-how of qualified personnel determines the quality of the products.“

Example given: „For BMW Munich we have machined doors as prototypes for the R 56 from the solid out of homogenized aluminium. For those doors neither a forging die nor any other tool or mould had existed so far, but BMW needed some basic data, in order to do some tests on a couple of operative parts.“ The company’s successful development shows in the new plant which was built in Königswiesen only recently. Karl Hüttmannsberger: „Right now we have ten machining centers and two turning machines, we work at four CAD posts and possess four CAM licenses. Furthermore we bought a state-of-the-art high-precision gantry machining center with linear drives, by aid of which we master even the most demanding machining tasks. With a spindle power of 30 kW, a spindle speed of up to 18 000 rpm, traveling paths of 10 000 x 3 500x1.500 mm in X/Y and Z and a gantry clearance of 1300 mm we can offer manufacturing solutions to our customers, which are so far unparalleled in our region. On top, by using the adapted measuring system Tritop XL we are able to optically measure even extremely voluminous work parts up to an accuracy of 0,015 mm.“ The above-mentioned gantry machine has the signet ,matec’ on it. Karl Hüttmannsberger explains his choice: „Alternatively a large-scale traveling column machining center produced by another well-known German machine tool manufacturer was under consideration, but with the gantry clamping is much more flexible and the machining on five sides allows free-form surfaces necessary in prototyping.“ And he continues: „From our point of view the matec gantry machine was absolutely the best choice. The fact, that we have won a couple of new customers solely because we have such a machine, shows how well-thought-out our decision was.“

The matec-30 P has quite impressive dimensions. Few competitiors can provide this kind of manufacturing solutions A lot of praise for matec and CEO Erich Unger. And it comes right back to HTK: „In the job order production sector I have hardly ever come across a company, which covers such a wide range as HTK. Mostly these companies try to get similar work parts, but here the skills include everything from plain job order production to the construction of devices or free-surface machining.“ And: „It is quite fascinating to see, that HTK doesn’t offer ready-made products, but works together with the customer to find the perfect solution, thereby developing and optimizing the product.“ Karl Hüttmannsberger tells us: „Generally the engineering of our customer’s product is made by us. HTK gets all necessary information like data and specifications and so on. Based on these informations we construct a CAD model. We then test and verify this model together with our customer. If everything is fine, we get the release and start producing.“ But let’s go back to the matec 30 P. Erich Unger: „ When machining large work parts, the 30 P supplies maximal speed for high precision and stands out for high operative flexibility due to the continuous 2-axis-swivel head. Both X- and Y-axis are equipped with linear drives .“ But – typical for matec – no customary ones. Erich Unger: „When you are machining with such a large-scale gantry machine the traveling speed is not the determining factor. That’s why we demanded linear drives from our suppliers, which are not trimmed for speed, and we got them. In plain terms: if you don’t want to drive 100 m/min, but only 30 m, then you only need 30% power, and this of course has an effect on the required power supply and of course the energy consumption.“ The heavy-duty linear drives are extremely stabile and robust. The matec-30 P is equipped with two tool magazines with 48 tools each and a traveling operator platform on the righthand side. The machine table has the incredible dimensions of 10 500 x 2 600 mm.

Karl Hüttmannsberger is very proud of his matec-30 P Given the size of the matec-30 P one can easily overlook that the gantry machine is not the only matec machine HTK owns. Two recently bought machining centers are also ,Made in Köngen’: matec-30 HVK and matec-30 HV compact.
