December 13, 2015 - Third Sunday Of Advent

Sunday’s Reflection CELEBRATE: This Sunday, God rejoices and sings because of us. We read in Zephaniah today that God “will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals” (Zephaniah 3:18). We know plenty about singing at festivals. Already our ears are ringing with the songs and carols that anticipate the Christmas season. Paul reminds us of the source of our own double rejoicing: God is the mighty savior who is in our midst (in Zephaniah’s words). Because this is so, says Paul, we can rejoice and be at ease. We don’t have to worry, for God’s peace will stand guard over our hearts and minds. A medieval carol depicts Christmas as “my dancing day” and urges us to enter into the dance. Why all the merrymaking? Because “the Lord is near,” as Paul reminds us (Philippians 4:5). He then points to another reason for the dancing: the dawn of the promise of peace, the peace beyond all understanding, that is now within our grasp.

The Jubilee Year of Mercy: Reflection Question of the Week “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone.” (Phil. 4:4–5) Adult: To whom have your past acts of mercy and forgiveness brought joy? What act of compassion could you do this week? Youth: What is it like for you to receive compassion and forgiveness from someone? How can you be compassionate toward someone this week?

MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER Q. When does the Jubilee Year of Mercy begin? This Holy Year begins on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 8, 2015. This liturgical feast day recalls God’s action from the very beginning of the history of mankind. The Jubilee Year will end on November 20, 2016, the Sunday dedicated to Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, the living face of the Father’s mercy. Q. What is a Holy Door? A Holy Door or porta sancta has been used since the fifteenth century as a ritual expression of conversion. Pilgrims and penitents pass through it as a gesture of leaving the past behind and crossing the threshold from sin to grace, from slavery to freedom, and from darkness to light. But a Holy Door finds meaning only when the believer associates the door with Christ. Jesus is the Door! Q. When will Pope Francis open the Holy Door? Why did he choose this day? Pope Francis opened the Holy Door at St. Peter’s on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. The Holy Door became a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope” (MV 3). Q. Will the Pope open any other Holy Doors? On the following Sunday, the Third Sunday of Advent, the Holy Door of the Cathedral of Rome – that is, the Basilica of Saint John Lateran – will be opened. In the following weeks, the Holy Doors of the other Papal Basilicas will be opened (MV 3). Pope Francis is urging every Catholic to make a pilgrimage to their local Cathedral to experience the graces of crossing the threshold of the Holy Door of Mercy. Q. Why is the focus on Mercy this Jubilee Year? “Mercy is the very foundation of the Church’s life. All of her pastoral activity should be caught up in the tenderness she makes present to believers; nothing in her preaching and in her witness to the world can be lacking in mercy. The Church’s credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love.” (MV 10). Q. Does the Year of Mercy have a motto? “Merciful like the Father… is the ‘motto’ of this Holy Year. This is a shortened version of the verse in Scripture, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36). The Pope wrote, “In mercy, we find proof of how God loves us…. Day after day, touched by his compassion, we also can become compassionate towards others.” (MV 14).

Q. What are the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy? The Corporal Works of Mercy: •To feed the hungry •To give drink to the thirsty •To clothe the naked •To shelter the homeless •To visit the sick •To ransom the captive •To bury the dead. The Spiritual Works of Mercy: •To instruct the ignorant •To counsel the doubtful •To admonish sinners •To bear wrongs patiently •To forgive offences willingly •To comfort the afflicted •To pray for the living and the dead. Q. What is a pilgrimage? A pilgrimage is a prayerful journey to a church or shrine with the purpose of coming closer to God. Pope Francis was very precise in exhorting the faithful to participate in a pilgrimage during the Jubilee Year of Mercy: “Everyone will have to make a pilgrimage… May pilgrimage be an impetus to conversion: by crossing the threshold of the Holy Door, we will find the strength to embrace God’s mercy and dedicate ourselves to being merciful with others as the Father has been with us.” (MV 14) Q. What are locations of Diocese of Orange Holy Doors and Pilgrimage Sites that I can I go on a pilgrimage? Holy Doors: *Holy Family Cathedral. 566 South Glassell St., Orange *Mission Basilica. 31520 Camino Capistrano, San Juan Capistrano Pilgrimage Sites: *Our Lady of Guadalupe. 900 West La Habra Blvd., La Habra *St. Joseph, Santa Ana. 727 Minter St., Santa Ana *Christ Cathedral. 13280 Chapman Ave., Garden Grove Q. What is an indulgence? An indulgence is partial or plenary according as it removes either part or all of the temporal punishment due to sin. It is traditionally gained in a Jubilee Year through pilgrimage, prayer, sacramental participation, and charitable works. Q. What are the requirements for obtaining indulgences? A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in addition to being in the state of grace: • Have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin. • Have sacramentally confessed their sins. • Receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required). • Pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff, the Pope. (MV - Misericordiae Vultus, Bull of Indiction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy)
