Third Sunday in Advent December 11, 2016

8:30 & 11:00 a.m.

We welcome all who worship with us today. Here are some notes about our congregation and our facility to help you feel at home among us. Nursery A staffed nursery is available for children from birth through age 5 on the sanctuary level down the hall past the drinking fountain. Please sign your child in and out of nursery care. Usually parents gather their children before communion so that they can come to the Table together. An usher will be glad to direct you.

lated during the service. Healing Rites are offered in the chapel every Sunday during communion. If you would like to pray for yourself or someone else, confidentially for any need, the minister will pray with you and anoint you with oil if you so desire.

The wilderness and dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom. A note of joyful expectation marks this Third Sunday in Advent. Even as we wait, we rejoice in the signs of God’s reign now.

Gathering PRE-SERVICE MUSIC Each Winter as the Year Grows Older Please stand as water is poured into the font.

In the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

ENTRANCE HYMN Please face the lighted candle carried in procession.

BLESSING OF THE ADVENT WREATH Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe. Your prophets spoke of a day when the desert would blossom and waters would break forth in the wilderness. Bless us as we light the candles on this wreath. Strengthen our hearts as we prepare for the coming of the Lord. May he give water to all who thirst, for he is our light and our salvation. Blessed be God forever. Amen.

Each week a candle is lighted in addition to the ones from the previous week. As we wait and watch, we behold a growing light in the midst of winter darkness.

3

Following the prayer, we sing:

GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. (Silence)

Stir up the wills of all who look to you, Lord God, and strengthen our faith in your coming, that, transformed by grace, we may walk in your way; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

4

“Stir up…” is the urgent plea in Advent. Each week in Advent, the Prayer of the Day asks God to “stir up” the Spirit and so stir us to renewed faith.

Word FIRST LESSON: ISAIAH 35:1-10 The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom; like the crocus it shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing. The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it, the majesty of Carmel and Sharon. They shall see the glory of the LORD, the majesty of our God. Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, “Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you.”

In Advent, the lessons for the first reading are from the prophet Isaiah, who envisions a day when God’s reign of peace will rule all things.

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes.

5

A highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way; the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for God’s people; no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray. No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the LORD shall return, and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God.

RESPONSE ELW #248

People Look East (stanza 3) Stars, keep the watch. When night is dim, one more light the bowl shall brim, shining beyond the frosty weather, bright as sun and moon together. People, look east, and sing today— Love, the Star, is on the way.

SECOND LESSON: JAMES 5:7-10 Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You also must be patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near. Beloved, do not grumble against one another, so that you may not be judged. See,

6

Patience until Christ’s coming

the Judge is standing at the doors! As an example of suffering and patience, beloved, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION We sing the Alleluia. The choir/cantor sings the verse for the day. The Alleluia is repeated.

Verse: I am sending my messen- | ger before you, who will prepare your | way before you.

GOSPEL: MATTHEW 11:2-11 The Holy Gospel According to St. Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by Are you the his disciples and said to him, “Are you the one who is to come, or are we one to come or to wait for another?” Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John what you shall we look hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are for another? cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me.” As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written,

7

‘See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’ Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

OFFERING PRAYER Let us pray. (Silence)

God of abundance, we bring before you the precious fruits of your creation, and with them our very lives. Teach us patience and hope as we care for all those in need until the coming of your Son, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

8

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Because in Jesus Christ you have established your reign of righteousness and peace. Therefore, we lift our songs of praise to you, joining them with the endless song of angels, saints, and the prophets of old: (Cantor sings)

Isaiah in a vision did of old the Lord of hosts enthroned on high behold, whose splendid train was wide outspread until its streaming glory did the temple fill. Above God's throne the shining seraphim with six-fold wings did rev'rence unto him. With two each seraph hid his glorious face, and two about his feet did interlace, and with the other two he soared on high, and one unto another thus did cry:

“Isaiah in a Vision Did of Old” (hymn #868 in ELW) is based on the story of the prophet’s call in Isaiah, chapter 6. The hymn was penned by Martin Luther and used as the Sanctus in his German Mass. A fitting inclusion in this 500th Anniversary Year of the Reformation.

9

Holy God, we praise you for creating a world of beauty and joy. When we brought on chaos, cruelty and despair, you sent prophets to proclaim your reign of justice and peace. When the time was right, you sent Jesus to bring your love and healing to a suffering world and so establish your promised reign. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Send your Holy Spirit upon us and on this bread and wine we share: Strengthen our faith, renew our trust, increase our hope, and bring to birth the justice and joy of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Through Christ, with Christ, in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen. Let us pray for the coming of God’s Kingdom: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

10

BREAKING OF THE BREAD AND INVITATION TO THE MEAL Presider breaks the bread in silence.

Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you. Share in the Feast of Salvation.

SHARING BREAD AND CUP All are welcome to meet the Risen Jesus in the sharing of bread and cup. Please come forward at the direction of the ushers. Communion will be around the rail today. You may dip the bread into the red wine or white grape juice, or drink directly from the cup. Gluten-free wafers are available. Ask the server. Those who do not commune are invited and welcome to come forward for a blessing. Ministers are available in the Chapel directly located across the altar area for healing prayers and anointing. If you would like to pray for yourself or someone else, confidentially for any need, the minister will pray with you.

God for whom we wait, you come to us in the broken bread and the cup we share. Make us ready always to welcome Christ into our hearts, and send us forth to be your people in the world, announcing your coming among us in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

11

Sending BLESSING May Christ, the Sun of righteousness, shine upon you and scatter the darkness from before your path. Almighty God, Father, ☩ Son, and Holy Spirit bless you now and forever. Amen.

Surrounded by a Great Cloud of Witnesses …

Commemorations and Festivals for the Week Lucy, martyr, died 304 Tuesday, December 13, 2016 Lucy was a young Christian of Sicily who was martyred during the persecutions under Emperor Diocletian. Her celebration became particularly important in Sweden and Norway, perhaps because the feast of Lucia (whose name means "light") originally fell on the shortest day of the year. John of the Cross, renewer of the church, died 1591 Wednesday, December 14, 2016 John was a member of the Carmelite monas-

tic order, and worked to reform it. His writings reflect a deep interest in mystical thought and meditation. Las Posadas (LLC) Friday, December 16, 2016 This celebration, long popular in Mexico, takes its name from the "posadas," or lodgings, sought by Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem. Their search is reenacted in a neighborhood, unsuccessfully, until finally they are welcomed in, and a party commences.

Announcements Sunday Mornings at 10 AM in the Tree of Life Room THIS MORNING — December 11, 2016 What the Bible Says about Homosexuality Over 70 PRLC congregation members were present for the first of three forums exploring the “Reconciling in Christ” (RIC) process of welcoming those in the LGBTQ community to our congregation. This morning we have our second forum on the subject. This forum will focus on reviewing scripture and what it can tell us about homosexuality and gender identify. The PRLC Reconciling In Christ committee consists of Pastor Bryon Hanson, Tiffany Megargee, Sylvia Maier, Carolyn Hostetler, Sofia Rice, Paul Campbell, Al Bruck, and Linda Thorson. All committee members are open and available for one-on-one conversation with anyone who would like to discuss the Reconciling in Christ process, especially if you have concerns or questions.

NEXT SUNDAY — December 18, 2016 Understanding Islam, Part 6 Join Dr. Michael Chrzatowski for the final forum in a sixweek series on “Understanding Islam.” Dr. Chrzatowski spent much of his career teaching geology and now in retirement has pursued his passion for the study of religions. He will provide a sound and unbiased presentation of Islam, as well as explore the relationship between Islam and Christianity. This morning’s topic: How the Qur’an Describes the Birth of Jesus.

Contact Minister of Outreach Patrick Meagher or member JoAnn Cress with questions, and sign up on this morning’s Count-Me-In. Help our Food Bank provide gifts for our neighbors’ children this Christmas: The gift wreath is in the narthex — please take one tag (or more) and return items by Sunday, December 18. We will assemble gift bags on Dec. 19 for the Christmas Distribution on Friday, December 23. If you would like to help with assembling gifts bags, we would love your help! We will meet at 6:00 pm on December 18 in Fellowship Hall. Please RSVP to Jo-Ann Cress, [email protected]. Many thanks! Today is Mentor Sunday. All confirmation students and their mentors will meet at 10am at the North end of Fellowship Hall for a “hands on” experience. The Phinney Phlames (the youth group for 4th and 5th graders) will meet today from noon until 1:30pm in room 301-302. This month’s theme is, ADVENT! Proclaiming, Preparing for, and Sharing the Good News through fun and fellowship. Lunch will be served, games will be played, and a good time will be had by all. Next Week The Caregiver Circle will meet next Sunday (December 18th) in the Pastor Hansen’s Office. If you care for an elderly parent, a loved one with a chronic condition, or a distant relative with continuing needs, you are welcome and encouraged to take part in this support group. This is an opportunity to meet with others experiencing similar life challenges, to learn coping skills, discover local resources, and pray with and for one another. The focus this month will be Redefining the way we celebrate: how to navigate the holidays in ways that are both joyful and life giving when all around you is changing or challenging. Children in preschool through 5th grade will present their annual rehearsal-free Christmas Pageant on Sunday, December 18th at 10:35ish am. Parents and friends are all invited to attend. Location TBA.

A message from PRLC Hammond House team member Alan Pearson: Compass Alliance’s Hammond House Women’s Shelter provides a safe, warm place to sleep each night for 40 homeless women. On alternate months, a group of volunteers from the PRLC congrega on collec vely prepares and serves a dinner to the guests of Hammond House. For the month of December, our dinner falls on Christmas Day, which gives us a wonderful opportunity to share new life in Christ on this special day. Typically, our volunteers prepare dishes separately and then bring the food to PRLC where the servers transport it to the shelter, serve the women and then share in a meal with them. Both preparing food and serving are wonderful opportuni es to share in God’s grace. Please consider if you are interested and able to take part in this ministry, either on Christmas Day or going forward in the new year. We could use some more help! Mark your Count-Me-In form if interested.

A note from the Administrator’s Office As we are approaching the end of the year, it seems like a good time for a quick look at our giving. Our tithes and offerings to the General Operating Fund through November 15, 2016 totaled $606,544; the budgeted amount through the same date is $621,250. However, we are monitoring our expenses carefully, which are also below budget Year-to-date. In addition, we are aware that December is traditionally a month when some generous gifts are received. Should you have any questions about your pledge, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone: (206) 783-2350, or email me: [email protected]. I will also be glad to talk to you about how to make a stock gift to Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church. Thank you all for your faithful support of the many ministries of PRLC. Many blessings on your Advent season!
