Third Sunday of Advent December 13, 2016 CELEBRATE This Sunday, God rejoices and sings because of us. We read in Zephaniah today that God “will sing joyfully because of you, / as one sings at festivals” (Zephaniah 3:18). We know plenty about singing at festivals. Already our ears are ringing with the songs and carols that anticipate the Christmas season. Paul reminds us of the source of our own double rejoicing: God is the mighty savior who is in our midst (in Zephaniah’s words). Because this is so, says Paul, we can rejoice and be at ease. We don’t have to worry, for God’s peace will stand guard over our hearts and minds. A medieval carol depicts Christmas as “my dancing day” and urges us to enter into the dance. Why all the merrymaking? Because “the Lord is near,” as Paul reminds us (Philippians 4:5). He then points to another reason for the dancing: the dawn of the promise of peace, the peace beyond all understanding, that is now within our grasp.

This week, our celebration of Advent makes a transition in ritual and texts. Beginning December 18, the countdown of nine days (a novena) to Christmas sees a heightened sense of expectation, and also a turning from the call of the Baptist in the wilderness to the events leading up to Jesus’ birth. In ancient Spain, December 18 was once celebrated as the “Feast of the Expectancy,” and customs grew up to heighten readiness in the homes. Some customs arise from monastic life and practice and spill over into our parish life. Beginning tonight, those who pray Vespers will sing in the opening phrase a beautiful title of Christ. These titles belong to a collection of opening phrases called the “O Antiphons” after the awe-inspired “O” sung on the first note. There’s a playful code in the titles: O Wisdom, O Lord, O Flower of Jesse, O Key of David, O Dawn, O Ruler, O Emmanuel. When you take their Latin names— Sapientia, Adonai, Radix, and so on—the titles form an acrostic when you read them backwards: “ERO CRAS.” In Latin, that is translated as “I will be there tomorrow!” It’s as if Christ were answering the prayers of the waiting people in the words of the prayers themselves. —Rev. Always Forward, Never Back Prayer should be an important part of our lives as Catholics; prayer needs to be a part of our lives (and our schedule) during this Advent season as we prepare for the coming of Christ. In our Second Reading today, St. Paul, in his letter to the Philippians proclaims a prayer for them (and for us as well), “And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ.” That prayer is a succinct way of reminding us what we should be doing as part of our Advent preparations. We should be making a concerted effort to love; that we need to increase both our knowledge and our perception of what it means to be a good Catholic, a good steward, a disciple; that we must sort out what is really of value — that can be a challenge in a world where Christmas is so commercialized and the emphasis seems to be placed more on glitz than on faith; and that we should be striving for “righteousness” as we prepare for not just the birth of Christ, but the final coming of the Lord as well.

BITTEN FALGE FARM WORKER PROGRAM

This is a reminder that your gifts for the children of the farm worker camps are due on Sunday, December 13th. This will give our volunteers time to sort the gifts by camp and to make sure all the children will receive a gift. Please remember to wrap the gifts and include any gift cards in a Christmas Card. It is important to attach the tree angel tags to each gift. If you took a grocery bag, those can be returned later. Refer to the dates listed on the note (attached to the bag) and return the filled bags to CRESPI HALL on any of the dates listed. Our volunteers are working very hard to insure the 140 farm worker families will receive our donations of food, clothing and gifts for Christmas. We wish to thank you for your help to us by filling the grocery bags and for returning your wrapped gifts or gift cards on the dates we have requested.

DOCENT CORNER Have you ever wondered about the organ at the Mission and how old it is? The original Mission organ was a reed organ given to Fr. Lasuén by George Vancouver in 1792. It was sold by Fr. Casanova in the late 1800s when it was no longer serviceable. The second organ was a secondhand pipe organ that broke down. A third organ was used in the 1960s. The current organ, the Casavant Frères organ, was installed in 1986. The organ was specifically built for the Carmel Mission and is named Opus 3612, 1986. The organ has 2 manual keyboards and pedal keys, 27 stops and 34 ranks (instruments), 2 operating consoles, an electro-pneumatic action and has 1,922 separate pipes. The main organ is located in the rear gallery of the Mission church which has splendid acoustics for music. A console, connected by a multiplex cable, is located on a moveable platform at the center of the nave where it is used for services and during special musical performances. The vivid colors and carvings are typical of the neo-classical Spanish decorative style and were made to match the altar reredos and the furniture found in the Mission. This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association.

Parental Notification Ballot Initiative If you have children or grandchildren in school you probably know that they cannot have a cavity filled or be given an aspirin by the school nurse without your consent. BUT did you know that your middle or high school-aged daughter can have a surgical or chemical abortion WITHOUT your permission or knowledge, AND they can leave school to do it? Thirty-nine states have Parental Notification laws. California does not. Currently, there is an initiative to put a Parental Notification law on the November, 2016, ballot so that we the voters can decide if we want our minor daughters (under 18) getting abortions without our knowledge. Please go to www.caparentalrights.org to get more information. Signatures will be collected before and after Masses this weekend. We need your signatures! Thank you!

2 weeks to Signup for Retrouvaille – Do you feel alone? Are you frustrated or angry with each other? Do you argue or have you just stopped talking to each other? This program has helped 10’s of 1000’s of couples experiencing marital difficulty at all levels including disillusionment and deep misery. Magical Day, Magical Night

After many months of preparation the Magical Mission Christmas for our Parish and Junípero Serra School dawned on Saturday, December 5th. The daytime Christmas Craft Fair had many wonderful wares, just perfect for Christmas giving. Our amazing Carmel Mission Choir added their magical sounds to the day and put everyone in the Christmas spirit. Evening saw the transformation of Murphy Center into an elegant dining-dancingbidding center, all in support of a Science Lab to enhance the Math-ScienceTechnology program at Junípero Serra School. Mike Marotta’s band added a special touch to complement the elegant tastes of the evening. We will let you know soon the financial outcome. THANK YOU to everyone who made this wonderful event possible, especially the MMC Committee! —The JSS Community

Jubilee Year of Mercy Third Sunday of Advent Dear Parish Family, In order to participate fully in the Jubilee Year of Mercy we must first know what the Works of Mercy are. They are the Corporal Works of Mercy and the Spiritual Works of Mercy. Corporal (needs of the body) and Spiritual (needs of the Spirit) Words to Ponder this Week: The Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy are actions we can perform that extend God’s compassion and mercy to those in need. But, most of all they are our map to illustrate the ways we show charity toward others. Corporal Works of Mercy Bury the dead Feed the hungry Give drink to the thirsty Clothe the naked Shelter the homeless Visit the sick

Spiritual Works of Mercy Counsel the doubtful Instruct the ignorant Admonish sinners Comfort the afflicted Forgive offenses Bear wrongs patiently Pray for the living and the dead

The Holy Year of Mercy “It is a time to heal wounds, a time to offer everyone forgiveness and reconciliation.” —Pope Francis
