WYNYARD COMPOSITE HIGH SCHOOL DECEMBER 2016 NEWSLETTER

NEWS FROM THE OFFICE MR. LEIBEL, PRINCIPAL It’s hard to believe December is here. Where did the first three months go? Term one report cards were handed out in early November and P/T interviews were held. It is always great to see parents in our building and even more so at interview time where they can check in with their child’s teachers regarding progress in the classroom. Please remember that if you have questions or concerns you may contact us at any time (306-554-2539). Many events occurred during November with a few standing out. On November 2nd, our Grade 10’s took part in a safeTALK presentation. safeTALK is a half-day alertness workshop that prepares our students to become a suicide-alert helpers. On November 10th, Mrs. Fisher and the SRC did an excellent job in leading WCHS in honoring our country’s true heroes during our annual Remembrance Day program. In addition to these events, WCHS hosted the senior boys provincial football finals, where our boys won a silver medal. Our girls also did extremely well, winning a bronze at the provincial volleyball championship in Kipling. Congratulations WCHS students! Looking forward, our Grade 10’s will take part in CPR/AED training on December 7th and 8th. Grad photos are scheduled for Dec 20th, which is also the last day of classes before the Christmas break. Have a safe and happy holiday season with friends and family, and best wishes in 2017! - Mr. Leibel - Principal

NEWS FROM THE BEAR DEN SR. GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL, MS. JORDAN After a silver medal finish at last year's 3A Girls’ Volleyball Championships, the WCHS Sr. Girls were looking to once again bring home some hardware. A Regional win in Langenburg qualified the Bears for provincials along with 9 other teams from around the province. In Wynyard's pool were Rocanville, Kinistino, the host, Kipling, and the defending bronze medalists, Waldheim. Pool B saw Oxbow, Wakaw, the defending gold medalists, Naicam, Langenburg and Wilkie. The Bears finished round robin play with a record of 3-1, second in their pool. In the quarterfinals they faced off against Wilkie, defeating them in straight sets. In the semi-finals the Bears fell to Oxbow in straight sets. After the loss, the Bears moved on to the Bronze medal game against Kinistino. The Bears came out solid at the beginning of the first set before errors allowed Kinistino to get back into it and take the first set. In the second set, the Bears got off to a slow start, trailing Kinistino 7-1. The Bears were able to battle all the way back to win the set 26-24. The third set was all Bears as they jumped out to a 8-3 lead and never looked back. The gold medal match also went to three with Waldheim coming out the victors. The hard fought provincial weekend capped off a successful season for the WCHS Bears Sr. Girls volleyball team. The girls played in 7 tournaments, with four tournament finals, and two wins. They also won their Conference and Regional play downs before moving on to provincials for the seventh straight year. The bronze medal that the girls captured, following their silver medal last year, is the first time the Bears have won back to back medals at provincial volleyball. Congratulations on a great season, Bears! - Ms. Jordan, Co-Coach

NEWS FROM THE BEAR DEN SR. FOOTBALL, MR. SOKUL The Wynyard Golden Bears completed Conference 1 league play with a perfect 6 win 0 loss record. They then hosted Watson in one league semi-final. Watson forfeited this game so that a developmental exhibition game could be played with both programs benefitting. Wynyard did not dress any starters for this exhibition game. Our grade 8 junior jamborees joined the grade 9’s to play one full quarter in this exhibition game. Wynyard then hosted Beauval in one of the four Provincial Quarter Finals. The Bear’s experience was just too much for the new Northern program. Wynyard won this contest handily with a score of 89-6. Wynyard then travelled to Rosthern for the Provincial Semi-final. Rosthern is a solid football program which has defeated Wynyard twice in previous years. The Bears however scored easily on their first two possessions against the wind and escaped the first quarter with a 14-8 lead. The Bears then dominated the second quarter opening up a commanding 40-16 lead. The Longhorns showed why they were undefeated this season putting together a great fourth quarter comeback but the Bear’s prevailed with a 56-49 victory. The Bears were given the honor to host the Provincial 2A six man Final at home on George Lamb Field vs the visiting Hanley Sabers. Thanks to the Town of Wynyard, our wonderful parent volunteers and all the dedicated staff at WCHS this event was a fabulous event for both teams. Our community hosted one heck of a final. An offensive shootout resulted in a thrilling 69-61 victory for the visiting Hanley Sabers. Both teams played hard to the last whistle and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship. Both teams capped off very successful dream seasons and are worthy of the medals earned. Thanks to all who supported the 2016 dream season! - Mr. Sokul, Co-Coach

NEWS FROM THE BEAR DEN JR. GIRL’S A VOLLEYBALL, MRS. LINDAL The girls’ season would have to be a season to remember! This year, the junior girls’ competitive team consisted of: Taylor Nichol, Tori Stefanick, Apryl Holweck, Jaslyn Sokul, Shelby Proznick, Carlee Faye, Raya Erickson, Jesslyn Leibel, Madison Gudmundson, Macey Tomblin and Julie Newberry. The girls attended numerous tournaments in and around Wynyard. They came home with four 1st place finishes (Melfort, Quill Lake, Wynyard and Bellevue) and one 2nd place finish (Foam Lake). Every match they played was both enjoyable yet entertaining for teams and spectators to watch. On Tuesday, November 1st, the team travelled to Kelvington, SK for Pre-Districts. The girls knew going into this tournament that they needed to finish 1st or their season would come to an end. This gave the girls, the drive and motivation to win Pre-Districts advancing them to Districts in Lanigan. At Districts, Wynyard played Lanigan Comp first, Lanigan had the crowd behind them but that didn’t stop the girls from taking a win against them. Next, the girls played Lanigan Elementary, this team was young but covered the court very well. They played each point like it was their last, Lanigan Elementary captured the victory during that match. For our last round robin match, Wynyard played Ituna and beat them in two sets. All the teams were evenly matched throughout the round robin play in this tournament, which made the games exciting and entertaining. Since Wynyard lost to Lanigan Elementary in round play, that placed the girls 2nd after round robin sending the girls to the semi-final against Lanigan Comp. This was a very intense game that went to a third set, but in the end Lanigan Comp managed to capture the victory, bringing our season to an end with a 3rd place finish. Thanks to all our volunteers who either worked in the canteen or did scorekeeping and lines for our tournament this season. We greatly appreciate the time you gave up to make sure our tournament was a success. I would like to thank the girls for a very fun, exciting and successful season. You all showed dedication, determination and pride for the Wynyard Composite High School Volleyball program! - Mrs. Lindal, Coach Page 4

NEWS FROM OUR PAA30A CLASS MS. BARTESKI-HOBERG One of the aims of a PAA class is to provide practical hands on experiences! We started the year looking at kitchen equipment and design planning where we had the chance to visit Russell Kitchen Equipment in Regina. We also had a chance to look at planning and pricing kitchen needs for life away from home by touring the University of Regina’s newest residence and completed a kitchen budgeting assignment. In October we invited former local restaurant owner, Kim Moore, into our cooking labs to teach us how to make crepes; special thanks to Kim for sharing his expertise and kitchen tips. Our next stop was SaskPolytechnic in Moose Jaw where we spent an entire morning with one of the head chefs of the professional cooking programs; another great experience in a professional kitchen facility where we learned about some post secondary options and completed a delicious Halloween bake off challenge. In between trying our own hand at baking cinnamon buns, feta dill biscuits, making chicken fried rice, ginger beer and some delicious soups we had the opportunity to work with Joel at the PepperTree Family Restaurant one afternoon learning about the preparation that goes into owning a restaurant. We are grateful to our community and would especially like to thank our local businesses for partnering with WCHS in creating meaningful learning experiences. We are hoping to finalize plans with the Wynyard Bakery and Dana Stefanson for our final experiences in December and January! - Ms. Barteski-Hoberg, PAA30A teacher
