June 2015 GREENFAULDS HIGH SCHOOL

LETTER TO PARENTS As always the month of June marks a busy end to the school session. Of particular significance at this time are our recent Annual Awards Ceremonies, where we recognised the efforts and achievements across S4 – S6 at our Senior Ceremony and S1 – S3 at the Junior Ceremony. Both ceremonies were very successful and our Guest speakers at the two events shared a common heritage and career path in that they both were brought up in the Greenfaulds area and have progressed to significant positions in the use of satellite technology. Mr Craig Clark, Chief Executive Officer at Clyde Space Ltd presented the awards at our Senior Ceremony where the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the presentation of our Dux Awards to twins Megan and Cameron McFarlane. Dr Hina Bacai, University of Strathclyde, fulfilled the same role at the Junior Ceremony, where our Junior Dux Awards were presented to S3 pupils – Kirsten Wylie for the girls and two boys shared the award – Harrison McCracken and Adam Watson. A full list of the over 200 young people who gained awards at the two ceremonies can be found later in this newsletter. Sandwiched between our two Awards Ceremonies was our Sixth Year Graduation and Prom which gave us the opportunity to celebrate their contributions to the school and extend best wishes for their future. After a very busy but enjoyable Graduation Ceremony in the school, pupils rushed out to hair stylists and to finalise evening outfits that would replace their last wearing of school uniforms. The Hilton Hotel was a fitting venue to showcase a range of glamorous attire and a great evening was had by all. The perfect way to end six years in Greenfaulds High. Our school show this session was the very appropriately titled, High School Musical, with a large cast putting on three excellent performances. All of the participants clearly enjoyed being involved and as in previous years it was nice to welcome back former pupils who volunteered to assist with this year’s production. Pupils in our associated Primary Schools were treated to a sneak preview of excerpts from High School Musical as well as a range of other musical presentations during the ‘World Tour of Cumbernauld’ by our Performing Arts colleagues. This took place shortly after

LETTER TO PARENTS CONTINUED the two day visit of our incoming First Year pupils from the Primaries. The next generation of Greenfaulds High pupils impressed us with their enthusiasm, positive attitude and eagerness to learn. They also impressed us greatly by the time and effort that they had invested in preparing and filming their ‘World War 1’ presentations, which were of the highest standard. We look forward to them formally joining our school community in August, where they will be given a warm welcome by our large number of Senior pupils who have volunteered to act as ‘Buddies’. The re-assurance and support of the Senior pupils helps smooth the transition from Primary for our new pupils and quickly helps remove any initial anxieties. Our new First Year pupils were given a free school tie during their visit and we look forward to seeing them wearing this when they return in August. We expect all of our pupils to adhere to our school Dress Code next session. As always therefore, the Summer Holidays are a good time for new ties to be purchased, particularly if the existing one is showing signs of needing to be updated. All pupils will be expected to wear the school tie and for this to be clearly visible. I would also point out that our Dress Code does not incorporate changing fashion trends. We expect girls to wear a black skirt or trousers. Black leggings and jeans are not acceptable, even although they may be promoted in the ‘Uniform’ section of some stores. A full description of our School Dress Code and the expectations for physical education are detailed later in the Newsletter. We greatly appreciate the strong commitment of pupils and parents to our Dress Code and look forward to the same strong support next session. There are a number of excursions taking place towards the end of term. There is a Watersports trip organized by the P.E. department to the South of France, a Modern Studies trip to New York and Washington, History trip to Auschwitz and a Biology Wallacea Expedition to Mexico. In addition there are a series of day trips to Blackpool and M&D’s as part of our approach to recognizing and rewarding good behaviour and application in class throughout the session. Progress on the creation of the new school has been good with foundations now securely in place and stairwells for the new school quickly rising to form a framework around which the individual floors for the new structure will take shape. As always we have colleagues retiring at the end of the session. Mr Meikleham of the Maths Department retires after 34 years in the school, Mr Haughney, for many years Principal Teacher of Biology, after 33 years and Mrs O’Donnell who has been Principal Teachers of the Access to Learning Department for the last 11 years is also leaving.

LETTER TO PARENTS CONTINUED I too will be retiring as Headteacher at the Summer and the new Headteacher from August will be Mrs Linda Park. Mrs Park has been Headteacher at Calderhead High School for the last 5 years and has done an excellent job. I have every confidence that she will be positively received by the Greenfaulds community and take the school forward to new levels of achievement in the new building. I have greatly enjoyed my 14 years as Headteacher in Greenfaulds High. It is a very positive environment, with well-behaved, highly motivated young people, supportive parents and highly committed staff. I would like to express my grateful thanks for the strong support that I have received from all members of our community during my period as Headteacher and extend best wishes for an enjoyable Summer. BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT 60 S3 Biology pupils went on a trip to Edinburgh Zoo in May. The pupils took part in a workshop run by the zoo and visited a range of animals to observe different types of behaviour. The group also got a chance to visit the Giant Pandas and managed to catch them up and moving about which is impressive considering they sleep for 16 hours a day!

GRADUATION DAY Thursday 11 June 2014. Graduation Day at Greenfaulds High School. Once again a very large year group and they looked so smart as they donned their blue and yellow uniforms for the very last time. The pupils themselves cannot even believe that it has been six years since they first entered Greenfaulds High as bright eyed young boys and girls and that their last formal day in school had arrived. We have watched their development with great interest in the school and with pride we have watched them become successful learners, effective contributors, confident individuals. And responsible citizens. It has been very interesting to see skills, talents and of course personalities evolve over the 6 year period. Clearly one of the most significant factors in shaping the ethos of a Sixth Year group are their leaders and this year’s Captains took on their roles with relish. Once again the calibre of pupils who put their names forward for captaincy this year was very high. This year saw Megan McFarlane and Ryan Phillips taking on the mantle of School Captains and both carried out their roles well. The Vice Captains also deserve a mention for the way in which they carried out their duties. So well done to Daniel Fisher, Brian Kinlan, Greg Robinson, Cameron McFarlane, Mark McGlinchie, Leanne Young-Glatley, Abby Carr, Emma Clark, Rosie Dendy and Kirsten Hutchison. The calibre of the students in this year group was outstanding with 2 Dux winners, and both from the same family. Well done to twins, Cameron and Megan McFarlane. We are sad to see them go as I am sure some of them will be sad at their departure but wish them all the best for the future.

PROM 2015 Less than 6 hours later ….. What a transformation. The blue and gold blazers which had been proudly worn for the last time had now been cast aside in favour of suits, kilts and dinner suits. The girls looked absolutely gorgeous with their beautiful prom gowns, perfectly coiffed hair and stunning make up. They all looked more like Hollywood stars. This year’s prom was again a change of venue with the Captains opting for another Hilton, but this time the Hilton in Glasgow City centre. The hall was tastefully decorated. This year, however, there was an added attraction in the form of the very popular Photobooth. The photobooth was busy all night and the pictures below will I am sure provide the pupils with treasured memories from their prom. The Senior Management Team and many other teaching staff joined the 6th year pupils to help them make their prom night a truly memorable occasion - and it was certainly that. These young people knew how to enjoy themselves and they also behaved impeccably. There was a truly great atmosphere at this prom. A number of these pupils will be remembered for a long time to come. We wish them well in whatever they choose to do in the future.

Pupils found this a very worthwhile experience as they learned a lot about the important work of the council.

BUSINESS EDUCATION BUSINESS AWARENESS DAY 25 S5/6 Higher Business Management pupils took part in a Business Awareness Programme which is sponsored by Stagecoach. There were a number of representatives from different branches of industry who each delivered a short workshop. The workshops were interactive and the pupils involved thoroughly enjoyed this. Ewan Tooth who is a Freelance Business consultant and runs a company called Shocks and Snares started off the day with a look at the perils and pitfalls of the world of finance. Two representatives from Prudential Insurance also delivered a very interesting workshop. The last workshop was delivered by 2 representatives from construction company Morgan Sinden. The pupils were given a brief and they had to manage the task and make as much money as possible from their project. The day was concluded with each pupil receiving a certificate to show they had participated the one day workshop. The feedback from the pupils was very positive.

SCHOOL DRESS CODE Following extensive consultation with parents and the Pupil Councils in S1-S5, the revised Dress Code for Greenfaulds High came into place from Monday August 19th, 2002. All pupils are expected to conform with this. All pupils are expected to wear a school tie which must be clearly visible. Pupils in S5/6 are allowed to wear the Senior’s tie. All other pupils will wear the “traditional” school tie. To accompany the school tie, pupils are expected to wear a white shirt or blouse, Other main elements will be: 

Black trousers for boys, black skirt or trousers for girls

Plain black v-neck sweater/cardigan which should allow the school tie to be clearly visible at all times.

School blazers are available for all pupils. However, it is expected that senior pupils wishing to take on positions of responsibility in the school such as Captain, Vice Captain, Prefect or House Captains will wear the school blazer. This will mean that they are readily identifiable to younger pupils to the school. In line with North Lanarkshire Council’s Dress Code guidelines there are certain items of clothing which are unacceptable for wearing in/around the school. Such items include: 

Sportswear of all types,

Denim,

Clothing with advertising slogans, publicising musical groups, anti-religious symbolism or political slogans etc.

Baseball caps or other external headwear (except for religious observance),

Loose fitting clothing, dangling earrings which could cause Health and Safety difficulties,

Any other clothing which could disrupt the normal operation of the school, cause damage or injury.

PE DEPARTMENT Dear Parent / Guardian, I am writing to inform you of the procedures that currently exist in the Physical Education Department within Greenfaulds High School. In light of the new initiatives taking place within education, Curriculum for Excellence and Active Healthy Lifestyles, we have reviewed our PE Participation and Kit policy and would like to advise you that every pupil participating in PE lessons will be expected to wear; PLAIN WHITE T-SHIRT / POLO SHIRT BLACK SHORTS OR JOGGING / TRACKSUIT BOTTOMS APPROPRIATE TRAINING SHOES (NO SAND SHOES or CONVERSE STYLE LEISURE SHOES / VANS) These items of clothing are all readily available, at reasonable costs, in all supermarkets and high street stores.

I would also like to stress that no jewellery whatsoever is allowed to be worn whilst your child is participating in PE. All items of value should be handed in to a member of the PE staff We would also ask that your child has their PE kit with them for every lesson, even if injured or unwell, so that they can positively contribute to each lesson, in some way or another. We strongly believe that these changes have been made to enable us to have a positive impact on your son or daughter’s participation, therefore an improvement in their fitness levels, and finally their continued good behaviour within the PE Department. I hope that we can count on both your help and continued support in improving the high standards expected in Greenfaulds High School.

If you have any concerns regarding this letter please do not hesitate to contact me at the school. Thanking you in advance, Yours sincerely E Moore Principal Teacher Physical Education Department.
