STUMPED ON MATH

“Math is just like sports and music, if you do not practice, it is unlikely that you will be good at it!” Is your student showing you the “math practice” (homework) they are doing? If not, how about creating a math study group? Many parents are inviting several of their child’s friends over on certain evenings to focus solely on math. Some are doing this weekly, others before unit exams. A little pizza and a lot of working together, studying and unraveling the mysteries of math can greatly improve the chances for your child’s success in math. Any questions, please contact our Math Department Chair, Karen Hill @ ext 5655 or [email protected].

Parent Assist

We hope many of you had the chance to meet with teachers during our Parent Teachers Conferences in October and get your Parent Assistant account information. However, for those of you who were unable to attend, we wanted to inform you as to how you can access your student’s grades and attendance information on-line. If you are interested in accessing this information you will need to get a username and password. To do this, you will need to go to Student Management between the hours of 7:30 – 4:00 and show picture ID. By using the program called Parent Assistant you will be able to view your student’s daily schedule, attendance, classroom grades, assignments and more via the Internet. We hope you take advantage of this opportunity.

Drivers Education Notice

The Drivers Education program at the Gresham/Barlow School District is designed to meet the State of Oregon, Department of Transportation requirements. To meet these requirements and qualify for State Certification students must successfully complete 30 or more hours of classroom instruction and 12 or more hours of in-car instruction. Both the classroom instruction and in-car instruction will be taught during the same period of time. All students must have their learners’ permit before they can sign up for the class. The cost of the program is $185 per student. An additional $250 dollars will be charged to students who turn 18 or obtain a valid drivers license before course completion as the state will not reimburse the school for these students. Each classroom-driving session lasts approximately six (6) weeks in length. Enrollment is limited to 24 students per-class and will be done on a first come basis. The first 24 students who make application for and pay their fee to the bookkeeper for each class session will be chosen. Students, with their parent/guardian, will need to schedule their driving time at the parent night for each session. Students who do not show up with a parent/guardian at the parent night will not be allowed to participate in classes. All classroom sessions have been scheduled on Monday and Wednesday with driving schedules broken into four groups (of six students), each group driving at the same scheduled time during different days of the week. Three classes have been scheduled during the school year and a 4th and 5th scheduled in the summer after school is out. The dates for sessions #1, #2 and #3 are as follows: Session #1 FULL Session #2 FULL Session #3 Parent Night March 29th (Mandatory attendance for student with parent/guardian 6:30 to 9:00) Classes start on April 4th and end on May 11th -parent night – Little Theater

******Snowball*****December 4th******** Sam Barlow’s winter semi-formal dance is scheduled for Saturday, December 4 from 8-11 p.m. in the cafeteria. Dress for the dance is semi-formal, and a tuxedo is NOT required.

Parents, please remember that our young women need to wear dresses that are suitable for a school dance. It is awkward for our staff, and embarrassing to students, to have to approach a young woman wearing a dress that is too revealing the night of the dance. Sending a student home ruins everyone’s night! Please help us ensure a pleasant evening for everyone by selecting appropriate attire. Procedures for Guest Passes In order for a Sam Barlow student to bring a non-Barlow date to Snowball or Prom, a guest pass form must be completed and turned in to the assistant principal for approval by 3:30 p.m. the Tuesday before the dance. For this year’s Snowball that deadline will be Tuesday, November 30th. Assistant Principals need at least 24 hours to process the guest pass once it is submitted. It is then the student’s job to return and pick it up. The completed guest pass must be presented at the time the ticket is purchased during lunches the week of the dance. Assistant principals will not process guest passes after the Tuesday, November 30 deadline. Guest pass forms are available in the main office 2-3 weeks prior to ticket sales. By planning ahead, students wishing to bring a guest to Snowball have ample time to collect the necessary signatures. No guests younger than 9th grade or 21 and older are permitted at Barlow dances. In addition, faxing the form to or from our school offices is not allowed. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain the required signatures. Reminder: No Tolerance Policy For Inappropriate Dancing Students and parents are reminded that Freaking, Grinding, or other dancing of a sexual nature is not appropriate for dances at SBHS. There will be no warnings. Students who choose to dance in this manner will be removed from the dance and sent home. Repeated violations will result in loss of dance privileges.

CLOSED CAMPUS POLICY

The Sam Barlow High School campus is closed to students leaving in vehicles or on foot during the school day, with the following provisions: 1. Students who have late arrival or early release may arrive late or leave early as their schedules indicate. In lieu of gate passes, they should be prepared to show their validated student body cards to the campus monitor on duty. (Students who drive off campus for early dismissal may not return to school until after the busses have cleared the student parking lot.) 2. Students whose schedules require them to travel (i.e., off campus work experience programs, etc.) may leave as required. In lieu of gate passes, they should be prepared to show their schedule or validated student body cards to the campus monitor on duty. 3. Students who have other legitimate needs to leave campus during the school day(i.e., illness, medical or dental appointments, etc.) may obtain passes to leave as appropriate. a) In order to receive a pass to leave campus for a pre-arranged appointment, the student should bring his/her excuse note signed by a parent/guardian to the attendance window. b) If a student needs to leave during the school day due to illness or some other type of emergency, the school nurse (or designee) will issue him/her a pass to leave campus only after obtaining permission to do so via a phone call to a parent or other designated emergency contact person. 4. Students may not leave campus during independent study time (unless a parent has given permission for his/her student to leave campus via a phone call or note to the Student Management office). Note: Seniors and juniors who have I.S. immediately before their assigned lunch period may leave campus during I.S. if they have been approved to leave campus during their lunch period. 5. Students who have off campus privileges may not take other students off campus who are not cleared to leave. 6. Seniors and juniors may be permitted to leave campus during lunch only if they meet a specific set of criteria as listed below and have a closed campus permission signed by parent or guardian. • Parent permission • No drug/alcohol violations • 2.0 GPA minimum (previous term/semester) • No serious driving violations • No pattern of unexcused absences or tardies • No other serious disciplinary infractions To apply for permission to leave campus during lunch, seniors and juniors need to: a) Obtain the “Closed Campus Application form” from Student Management or on the Sam Barlow website. b) Fill out the form and have a parent/guardian sign it, c) Return the form to Student Management to be processed. Seniors and juniors who meet the criteria listed above and are given permission to leave campus during lunch should be aware that a sudden drop in GPA, poor attendance, serious driving violations or other disciplinary infractions may result in the loss of this privilege. Seniors and juniors who fail to meet the criteria listed above will be prohibited from leaving campus during lunch. However, they may earn the right to do so during 2nd semester if, at the end of 1st semester, they have shown enough improvement in their grades, attendance and/or behavior to meet the criteria. An administrator will review a senior’s or junior’s request to be reconsidered for permission to leave campus for lunch during 2nd semester. (The senior’s or junior’s parent must approve this request.)

Senior Interviews 2011

Counselors are busy conducting interviews with their seniors, which will continue for the next few weeks. They are reviewing Barlow’s website, showing seniors all of the information that is contained there. They are also talking about post high school plans and CIM portfolio requirements, as well as conducting transcript evaluations. We have provided seniors with a college-counseling timetable, which highlights important dates to remember, including OUS college visits, financial aid night, and FAFSA information. Parents, please talk to your seniors about their senior checklist sheet, and help them make the most of their senior year!

Freshman Orientation

At the end of September, counselors met with most of their freshman, to let them know what role the counselor plays in their high school experience. Counselors are responsible for all academic, personal/social, and career related matters. Students were given a tour of Barlow’s resources, i.e. the math lab (room 216), the tutoring center (room 507), and the College and Career Center. Information was shared about the ASPIRE program, which is a group of trained volunteers who work directly with students to create a post-high school plan. Applications for this program are available in the career center. Please contact your student’s counselor if you would like more information.

Hear about things to consider when looking for financial aid, how to get the most out of the FAFSA, and many other strategies. This is a must for everyone! It’s never too early or too late to consider how to financially prepare for the future in order to fund that education! This informational meeting will be held on November 9th at 6:30 in Barlow’s Media Center. College Night in Oregon will be held Monday, November 8 at Mt. Hood Community College from 6:30– 9:00 pm. Enjoy free pizza and soda, learn about planning and paying for college, and enter to win a $500 scholarship! Visit www.collegenightinor.org for more information! What is the FAFSA? (and who needs to fill it out?) The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form determines the amount of “free funds” (money you don’t have to pay back!) for which students may be eligible. Every senior considering higher education (2 and 4 year colleges/universities) or training (tech, art, beauty schools or apprenticeships) should file the FAFSA. This information from the FAFSA is required for schools to offer any kind of award/aid package – and many scholarships require filing of a FAFSA. The ASPIRE Financial Aid Night will be Monday, December 6 at 6:30 in the SBHS Auditorium (English version) and in the Little Theater (Spanish version.) This meeting is a great way to learn more about the FAFSA process and get many of your questions answered before you start the actual filing process. Juniors and parents should attend to get a feel for what to expect for your senior year! Seniors, have you applied for your FAFSA pin number? You must have one before you can submit your FAFSA. Go to www.pin.ed.gov to apply. Be very careful with your pin number, keep it in a safe place and do not share it with anyone! You should also research the FAFSA4-caster. This tool is a useful financial aid estimator. Go to www.FederalStudentAid.ed.gov to access the FAFSA4-caster.

Gresham-Barlow state report card ratings remain strong

The Oregon Department of Education this week issued the state and federal report card for each elementary, middle, and high school in the Gresham-Barlow School District. The report card ratings cover the 2009-2010 school year. Across the district, five schools were rated outstanding, fourteen were rated satisfactory, and no schools were rated in need of improvement. “State report cards represent one of several measures used to determine how schools are doing,” said Superintendent Jim Schlachter. “We are pleased that all of the schools in the district received outstanding or satisfactory ratings from Oregon’s Department of Education.” This is the seventh year the Oregon Department of Education has combined the state and federal ratings in one report. The state ratings are required by the Legislature. Congress requires the federal ratings as part of the No Child Left Behind Act. Ten out of nineteen schools meet Adequate Yearly Progress In addition to state ratings, the report card includes the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) rating that schools receive from the federal government. Ten schools met Adequate Yearly Progress and nine schools did not. “AYP results help show us where we need to focus our efforts in reading and math,” said Schlachter. “However, the practices found in quality schools extend beyond instruction in the core subjects. Physical education, music, and various elective classes are also critical to student success in school.” School districts are required to distribute school report cards to parents by January 15, 2011. As part of their school improvement process, all schools in the district will be setting achievement targets based on test score results. All schools will also work to tailor instruction to meet the needs of individual students. This is the twelfth annual report mandated for each school and district and the eighth AYP report. 2009-10 State of Oregon School Ratings Outstanding (5) Deep Creek Elementary Hogan Cedars Elementary Damascus Middle School West Orient Middle School Springwater Trail High School Satisfactory (14) East Gresham Elementary East Orient Elementary Hall Elementary Highland Elementary Hollydale Elementary Kelly Creek Elementary North Gresham Elementary Powell Valley Elementary West Gresham Elementary Clear Creek Middle School Dexter McCarty Middle School Gordon Russell Middle School Gresham High School Barlow High School In Need of Improvement None
