From the Pastor’s Desk I am sure that many of you saw the sad news about the four religious sisters who were martyred in Yemen earlier this month. They belonged to the Missionaries of Charity, the religious order founded by Mother Teresa. The sisters worked at a nursing home and were killed along with a number of their volunteers. On the very same day, two separate incidents of gun violence in east Columbus left one child dead and two other children seriously injured. The tragedy caused Mayor Ginther to issue a statement: “We cannot tolerate children being killed in our city, or allow ourselves to become numb to neighborhood violence.” At times, it seems as if our world and our local community have indeed become numb to the loss of human life. As Christians, we believe that God has made each man, woman, and child in his image and likeness, bestowing upon everyone a tremendous dignity. In this weekend’s gospel, Jesus reminds the scribes and Pharisees of the dignity of the woman caught in adultery: “Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Even though she has sinned, the adulterous woman is valuable, cherished, and loved. Truly, Christ came to put an end to violence and open our eyes to the worth of each human life. I pray that our hearts will still be moved when we hear stories of life lost, whether it be far from home or right down the street. Pope Francis warns us not to succumb to the “culture of indifference.” It should upset us when we see our brother and sisters treated with anything less than reverence and respect. Let us pray that the victims of violence be restored to the fullness of health, and let us do our part to foster a culture of life that protects all of God’s children.

Desde el Escritorio del Párroco Estoy seguro de que muchos de ustedes vieron la triste noticia de las cuatro hermanas religiosas que fueron martirizadas en Yemen a principios de este mes. Pertenecían a las Misioneras de la Caridad, orden religiosa fundada por la Madre Teresa. Trabajaban en un asilo de ancianos, y las mataron junto con unos de sus voluntarios. Ese mismo día, dos incidentes separados de violencia con armas de fuego dejaron un niño muerto y otros dos niños gravemente heridos en el este de Columbus. La tragedia causó que el Alcalde Ginther emitiera un comunicado: "No podemos tolerar que asesinen niños en nuestra ciudad, o permitirnos ser insensibles a la violencia en los vecindarios." A veces, parece como si nuestro mundo y nuestra comunidad se hubieran vuelto insensibles a la pérdida de vidas humanas. Como cristianos, creemos que Dios ha hecho a cada hombre, mujer y niño a su imagen y semejanza, dándoles a todos una tremenda dignidad. En el Evangelio de este fin de semana, Jesús les recuerda a los escribas y fariseos de la dignidad de la mujer sorprendida en adulterio: "Aquel que esté libre de pecado que arroje la primera piedra." A pesar de que ha pecado, la mujer adúltera es valiosa, apreciada, y amada. De verdad, Cristo vino a poner fin a la violencia y a abrirnos los ojos al valor verdadero de cada vida humana.

The Palm Sunday Weekend Retreat for Men will be held next weekend, March 18-20. Complete your Lenten fast with a truly masculine prayer: participate in “Carry the Cross,” a 12-mile Stations of the Cross hike sponsored by Wilderness Outreach. The hike will be held on Holy Saturday, March 26, at Clear Creek Metro Park. The starting location will be in the parking lot and shelter house at the Barneby Hambleton area at the western end of the park. Arrival time is 7:30 a.m. and the final prayer will be at 2:00 p.m. This is a good way for fathers and sons to bond with one another in a spiritual and physical challenge. On Tuesday, April 12, there will be an opportunity for legislative advocacy on two important issues in our state. Individuals are invited to spend the day at the Statehouse with Ohioans to Stop Executions, asking legislative leaders to end the use of the death penalty in Ohio. To register with Ohioans to Stop Executions, visit www.otse.org. Ohio Right to Life will also be downtown that day, supporting the Downs Syndrome Non-Discrimination Act.
