The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?” “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and they spent that day with him. It was about four in the afternoon. John 1:35-39 (NIV2011)

As you read the above scripture, you might think I have some deep and profound theological reason for choosing that particular scripture. I will admit that a great deal of thought goes into selecting the scripture, and sometimes I do have a theological reason for picking a particular scripture. Sometimes, though, like this time, I pick the scripture so I can use it as a springboard to announce something else. When the disciples of John started following Jesus, wanting to know where he was staying, Jesus invited them to come and see. And when they did, they spent the day learning from him. In that same Spirit, I invite you to come and see what is happening at the church starting this September. On Wednesday, September 7, Disciples Zone 2.0 kicks off for the fall. We will once again start with a snack supper at 5:45 in Fellowship Hall. Pam Sheldon is helping organize the snack suppers, so, if you would like to help with the food, a sign-up sheet will be available at church, or you can talk to Pam or Belinda Amend. At 6:15, classes will begin. For our children and youth, they will begin a new series based on the Deep Blue Bible. Belinda Amend will be working with the children while Joy Hayden will be working with our youth on Wednesday night. Then, on Sunday morning, Disciples Zone Sunday school will continue with the lesson from Wednesday night. For our adults on Wednesday night, there will be two options. I will be continuing our study of Philip Yancey’s What’s So Amazing About Grace? For our young adults, Jessica Vignery will be leading a study on Wm. Paul Young’s intriguing novel The Shack. For our adults on Sunday morning there is the Friendship Class which will be looking at the Sovereignty of God in the Uniform Lesson Series. And the Boat Class, led by Ron Vignery, I believe will continue their study of How Jesus Became God: The Exaltation of a Jewish Preacher from Galilee by Bart D. Ehrman (I have to say “I think” because I did not check with Ron before I wrote this. It could be something else entirely, so come and check it and find out.) For the musically inclined, our woodwind ensemble practices Wednesday evenings at 5:30 and our choir practices at 7:00. Our praise band practices following choir. If you are a woodwind player, a singer, or a ripping lead guitarist, come join us. There are many things happening in the life of First Christian Church. I have only scratched the surface, so, as Jesus shared with the disciples of John, come and see and become a part of what is happening at First Christian Church of Goodland, Kansas. I look forward to seeing you at church. Remember to bring a friend, and until next we meet, PEACE! Volume 48 Issue 10

WEDNESDAY NIGHT CLASS ~Doug Amend~

WHO AM I? Last month’s (Who am I) was Vola Fenner. This month can you guess who our congregational family member is? Write your guess on any Sunday’s Communication Card and we will try to identify the person before the next newsletter is out: Most excited about: Learning to read better. Favorite thing about school: Reading Best Part of Summer: Going to San Diego. Worst chores: getting eggs out of the chicken coop because the chickens try to get me. Drives the family crazy by playing ball tag in the house. In her spare time she likes to watch movies. When she grows up she wants to be a gymnastics teacher. Best part about church: Going to the nursery and playing. Her whole family worships with her in church.

We will continue with Philip Yancey’s “What’s So Amazing about Grace” on Wednesday Evening.

Who Am I?

There will be a dinner at 5:45 p.m. with class after that. Come join in the fellowship and discussion.
