This Thursday, December 8, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. What is the Immaculate Conception exactly? It is our belief that God created Mary without the stain of Original Sin. Only four individuals in the entire history of the human race were created without Original Sin: Adam, Eve, Jesus, and Mary. Adam and Eve were completely free, entirely capable of obeying God’s commandments and living in harmony in the Garden of Eden. However, Adam and Eve abused that freedom and introduced sin and death into the world when they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Este jueves, 8 de diciembre, celebramos la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción. ¿Qué es exactamente la Inmaculada Concepción? Es nuestra creencia de que Dios creó a María sin la mancha del Pecado Original. Sólo cuatro individuos en toda la historia de la raza humana fueron creados sin Pecado Original: Adán, Eva, Jesús y María. Adán y Eva eran completamente libres, totalmente capaces de obedecer los mandamientos de Dios y vivir en armonía en el Jardín del Edén. Sin embargo, Adán y Eva abusaron de esa libertad e introdujeron el pecado y la muerte en el mundo cuando comieron del árbol del conocimiento del bien y del mal.

Reading the gospels, we can see that Jesus and Mary are the “new Adam” and the “new Eve.” Where humanity’s first parents got it wrong, Jesus and Mary got it right. They used their sinless freedom to say “Yes” to God’s plan at every moment of their existence. Think about Mary’s words to the Archangel Gabriel: “Let it be done to me according to your word.” Consider also the prayer of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane: “Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet not my will, but yours be done.” It is clear that Jesus and Mary were docile to God’s ways, even though they had to embrace the tree of the cross.

Al leer los evangelios podemos ver que Jesús y María son el "nuevo Adán" y la "nueva Eva". Donde los primeros padres de la humanidad se equivocaron, Jesús y María lo hicieron bien. Usaron su libertad sin pecado para decir "Sí" al plan de Dios en cada momento de su existencia. Piensa en las palabras de María al Arcángel Gabriel: "Que se haga a mí según tu palabra". Considera también la oración de Jesús en el Jardín de Getsemaní: "Padre, si es tu voluntad, aparta de mí este cáliz. Pero que no se haga mi voluntad, sino la tuya”. Es evidente que Jesús y María fueron dóciles a los caminos de Dios, aunque tuvieran que abrazar el árbol de la cruz.

As Christians, we have a choice to make every day. Are we going to follow the example of Adam and Eve, using our freedom to decide for ourselves what is good and evil? Or do we freely follow God’s will and carry the cross, as did Jesus and Mary? When we struggle with God’s plan for our lives, it is helpful to reflect prayerfully upon the example of Jesus and Mary. Though you and I are burdened by the effects of Original Sin, we can count on the intercession of our Immaculate Mother and the grace of her Son to assist us. Let us honor them both with our participation at Mass this Thursday.

Como cristianos tenemos que elegir cada día. ¿Vamos a seguir el ejemplo de Adán y Eva, usando nuestra libertad para decidir por nosotros mismos qué es el bien y el mal? ¿O seguimos libremente la voluntad de Dios y llevamos la cruz, como Jesús y María? Cuando luchamos por el plan de Dios para nuestras vidas, es útil reflexionar en oración sobre el ejemplo de Jesús y María. Aunque ustedes y yo obramos bajo el peso de los efectos del Pecado Original, podemos contar con la intercesión de nuestra Madre Inmaculada y la gracia de su Hijo para ayudarnos. Christmas Poinsettia Memorials are a way to remember our deceased loved ones, as well as decorate the church during the Christmas season. If you would like, place a $10.00 donation in an envelope marked “Christmas Flowers” and include the name of your deceased loved one. Then put the envelope in the collection basket at Mass. All Christmas Flower donations must be submitted by Monday, December 19. (This event is bilingual.)

All Saints Academy Catholic School Escuela Católica All Saints Academy As Advent begins, the school will be taking extra time for prayer this season.
