Axis 360 offers patrons several apps that will allow them to read eBooks on their computer, eReader, or mobile device without multiple downloads. Axis 360 recently unveiled its own app for tablets and smartphones called axisReader along with Blio, a new multi-platform app that combines multimedia features for an interactive experience. Blio users can adjust font size, place bookmarks, and even have their eBooks read to them with a text-to-voice feature. All Axis 360 titles are also compatible with Adobe Digital Editions. Livingston Parish Library also offers fiction and nonfiction eBooks for download through OverDrive and EBSCOHost. Both services offer eBooks in a format compatible with most eReaders. OverDrive and EBSCOHost also provide free mobile apps for on-the-go readers. From the latest bestsellers to hidden gems for the eclectic reader, Livingston Parish Library has an eBook for everyone. Do you have kids? Try the TumbleBook Library, an online collection of animated, talking picture books that teach kids the joy of reading in a format they’ll love. TumbleBooks are created by adding animation, sound, music and narration to popular picture books in order to produce a multimedia picture book that kids can read or be read to from. The database includes storybooks, language learning, read-along books, and nonfiction books along with puzzles and games especially for kids.

REPORT FROM OUR DIRECTOR Fall In Love With Your Library As the world celebrates Valentine ’s Day on February 14, a question comes to mind: Do the residents of Livingston parish love their local libraries? Is the library important to them? Here is what some of our patrons have recently said about their love of the library:

Learn How To Use The Library’s Online Catalog What is the single best kept secret at the Livingston Parish Library? It’s our online catalog! The library’s catalog is one of the most under-utilized resources library patrons have at their disposal. Easily conducting a search for your desired items is only the beginning. There are many things that you can accomplish by logging into your own personal account, such as managing and storing your search information. This class will teach you how to keep track of your account electronically by renewing items on-line, checking your loan history, and requesting items. The Denham Springs-Walker Branch hosts this class on Thursday, February 27 at 6:30 p.m. It is open to ages 18 and up. In order to make optimum use of this class, you will need a Livingston Parish Library card and a basic working knowledge of computers.

Get Creative at the Main Branch Are you a creative person ready to tackle some projects in the new year? The Main Branch hosts two opportunities this month to embrace your imagination and make a fantastic finished product, wherever your interests lie. First, learn how to create your own unique 3D designs! Our Intro To 3D Design class on Thursday, February 6 at 6:00 p.m. will teach participants how to use Google Sketchup, a free modeling software for 3D design. Learn about the software’s interface, basic tools, and basic modeling. Class participants can also convert 3D design files to be used on MakerWare and printed on Livingston Parish Library’s 3D printer. Then, come out to Maker Day on Saturday, February 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and take advantage of our equipment for whatever creative project you are working on. We will have our screen printer, sewing machines, music recording equipment, or 3D printer available for use. Space is limited, so registration is required for all events. Read To Reel Trivia Contest Hollywood has found some of its greatest inspiration in books. The Denham Springs Walker Branch celebrates books and movies inspired by books the entire month of February with a display and an exciting trivia contest! Stop by the Adult Reference desk any time this month to answer a trivia question. If you answer the question correctly, you are entered in our weekly prize drawing. Patrons can answer one question per day. Prizes will be drawn each Friday: February 7, February 14, February 21, and February 28. Please call the Denham SpringsWalker Branch for details.

Need help with a gadget? Want to learn how to use your new tablet, download apps on your smartphone, set up a new e-mail address, or check out Facebook? Sign up for our One-on-One Technology Help! You will receive a 30-minute session with a library staff member who will walk you through the steps to reach your goal. You should have a clear goal for what you’d like to accomplish during your session. Please bring in any device that you need help with. We will not be able to repair broken equipment, troubleshoot hardware and software problems, or assist with non-standard software like Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, or CAD. Get Your Taxes Done For Free

Learn To Knit Or Crochet

Tax season is ongoing, and Livingston Parish Library offers free tax preparation through Tuesday, April 15. Co-sponsored by Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and the Internal Revenue Service, this service offers free tax preparation for participants with an income of $50,000 or less for 2013.

The Main Branch wraps up their knitting series with a class about knitting or crocheting wool on Friday, February 7 at 10:00 a.m. Receive instruction on how to crochet or knit, or share your skills. Please bring size 8 knitting needles or size H crochet hook and yarn.

Small Business Consulting If you own a small business or are interested in starting one, the Livingston Parish Library has partnered with the Louisiana Small Business Development Center at Southeastern Louisiana University to offer services that will help you get started or improve your current practices. Take advantage of free business consulting at the Main Branch on Wednesday, February 12 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Receive a private, one-hour consulting session with a LSBDC representative in areas including business plans, advertising plans, inventory control, financial projections, cost analysis, and much more.

Chess For Beginners Always wanted to learn how to play chess but never had the time? Check out the AlbanySpringfield Branch’s Chess for Beginners class on Thursday, February 27 at 6:00 p.m. You will learn about each piece on the board, the moves each piece makes, and basic openings. Get hands-on practice with fellow novices. At the end of the class, play a match to try out what you learned. Space is limited, so all classes listed above require registration. Using VITA is easy. Bring tax documents such as W-2s, 1099s, and information for deductions and credits along with a copy of last year’s tax return and a Social Security card for yourself, a spouse, and dependents. Volunteers will prepare most simple returns, but more complicated returns will not be processed. VITA volunteers prepare tax returns at three branches this month. The Denham Springs-Walker Branch’s events are each Thursday from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 1 and February 15 from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., and Tuesday, February 25 from 4:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. The Albany-Springfield’s sessions are Thursday, February 6 and February 13 from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. and each Saturday from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The Main Branch hosts events each Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. and each Saturday from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. All events are by appointment only. Create Cool Mardi Gras Bead Art Are you a champion Mardi Gras bead catcher? Do you ever wonder what to do with all those left over Mardi Gras beads after Carnival season is over? Learn how to make a mosaic using a few simple materials and Mardi Gras beads. The library will provide all materials, but you are welcome to bring any beads you wish to get rid of. When you are finished, you will have a lovely piece of artwork ready to display. The Denham Springs-Walker Branch debuts this workshop on Friday, February 14 at 10:00 a.m. The South Branch hosts the class on Saturday, February 15 at 10:00 a.m. and the Watson Branch’s class begins Monday, February 17 at 6:00 p.m. as part of their Crafts & Coffee series. The Albany-Springfield Branch invites you to create Mardi Gras bead art on Thursday, February 20 at 5:30 p.m. and the Main Branch wraps up the workshop on Saturday, February 22 at 10:00 a.m. Space is limited, so all classes require registration. My library books are coming due, and I can’t get to the branch this week to renew them. Can I renew them online instead? Yes, you can! To renew your library materials online, log in to your account at www.mylpl.info. Click the Log In button in the left-hand navigation menu. Enter your library card number as your Patron ID. Your password is the last four digits of your library card number. Now that you are logged in, you will be taken to your Account summary page. Click on the Account Activity

heading. This will bring up a list of items you currently have checked out. For each item you want to renew, click the orange Renew Loan button. Your item will now be renewed. If you’ve reached your renewal limit, or a request has been placed on that item, it cannot be renewed. To renew all of your items at once, click the small check box on the right side of the screen. Once the word Renew has become highlighted, clicking it again will renew all of your renewable items. Got a question about the library? Open Mic Night

eAudiobooks are digital recordings of books being read aloud. These recordings can be downloaded to your computer, eReader, MP3 player or other devices. Livingston Parish Library uses OneClickdigital, a service that allows you to download audiobooks for free from a vast collection. OneClickdigital is available online through Livingston Parish Library’s website or through a free app.

The Watson Branch hosts an Open Mic Night for patrons of all ages on Thursday, February 6 at 5:30 p.m. Try your hand at singing a song, reciting some poetry, or telling a story in front of a live audience.

Songwriter’s Circle Patrons bring their own instruments, sit in a circle and play their original songs at the Watson Branch on Saturday, February 15 at 2:00 p.m. The group will then offer feedback if requested. This is a great non-pressure event where songwriters can hone their skills and have a good time. Original songwriting is not required, but it is encouraged.
