WHY DOESN’T CATERPILLAR PUBLISH FILTER MICRON RATINGS? Micron ratings are used throughout the filter industry as a way to compare the ability to remove particles of a designated size. The figure is commonly used by will-fit suppliers as a method to convince customers that their non-recommended filter is able to stand up to the same requirements as Cat® Genuine Filters by simplifying Caterpillar’s thorough engineering down to a single figure. However, micron ratings are far from simple.
Micron rating is more than a single value. To illustrate this, lets try and answer the question “What is the micron rating of this filter?” The answer to this question can vary immensely based on a multitude of factors. These are just a few of the possible results: Beta Rating

That’s a lot of information, so let’s try some more specific questions. What is the nominal micron rating of 1R-1808? When discussing filter efficiency, “nominal” refers to Beta 2 or 50% efficiency, but not all companies follow that rule. According to industry standards, 5 microns and 23 microns could both be given as the nominal micron rating of 1R·1808. What is the absolute micron rating of 1R-1808? Absolute micron ratings are more specific than nominal, but there still isn’t a firm definition. Absolute micron rating can refer to Beta 75 (98.7% efficiency) or Beta 10,000 (99.99% efficiency) and the definition can change from filter to filter.

With all this uncertainty how do you know you’re choosing the right filter? If you are choosing filters from a will-fit supplier you simply don’t. Cat filters are held to the same standards as all Cat Genuine Parts, because they are considered an essential component of the complete system. The filters to the left are the pleats of a Cat 1 R-1808 Engine Oil Filter and will-fit competitive filter after undergoing flow fatigue testing. Unlike with the basic micron rating test putting the filters through flow fatigue shows the obvious deformation that inferior filters experience. Despite the media being similarly efficient the competitor’s filter cannot perform as well as the Cat filter. When the pleats bunch together the surface area of the media is greatly reduced, therefore reducing the dirt holding capacity of the filter. This can cause the filter to clog early, reduce fluid flow, open the filter bypass due to reduced fluid flow and debris completely bypassing the filter. This action decreases machine performance and can cause major engine components to go without lubrication. An inferior filter can cause a lot of problems that are typically blamed on other components. Early injector leakage can appear to be due to faulty injectors, but are often caused by improper contamination control. Sluggish machine performance can be caused by overly restrictive filters while being blamed on machine design. Cat filters are designed to keep Cat machines working hard as efficiently as possible. HOW CLEAN IS YOUR FUEL? Cat® Ultra High Efficiency Plus (UHE+) fuel filters provide improved filtration efficiency and capacity beyond current fuel filters. These new elements are a good choice for customers concerned with the quality of fuel being used in their equipment. The higher level of efficiency and improved capacity will allow for a much cleaner fuel system which promotes maximum component life and optimal equipment performance.
A filter’s efficiency is tested by measuring the number of particles of a particular size that enter and exit a filter during testing. For example, if you run a test measuring 5 micron test dust where 3000 particles flow into the filter and 1500 particles flow out of the filter the Beta Ratio is 2 and the efficiency is 50%. System Benefits: When the operator is seated and the parking brake is turned off, the Cat Seat Belt Reminder System triggers the following prompts:
• SOUNDS AN AUDIBLE WARNING – An audible alarm in the buckle alerts the operator to latch the seat belt before the machine begins to move. Once the buckle is latched, the alarm turns off.
• ACTIVATES A VISUAL WARNING – An LED light in the buckle provides a visual reminder to latch the seat belt before the machine begins to move. Once the buckle is latched, the light turns off.
Product Link™ Compatibility Because the Cat Seat Belt Reminder System is Product Link™ capable when Product Link is installed, two realtime diagnostics are transmitted to the VisionLink® user interface. The first diagnostic reports if the machine is started and the seat belt is not latched. The second diagnostic occurs if the operator disengages the parking brake and has not latched the seat belt. If the operator latches the seat belt after these diagnostics are transmitted, then the diagnostics will no longer appear as active alerts. However, they will continue to be logged behind the scenes.

Optimize Tire Life Caterpillar now offers a Stand Alone Tire Monitoring System to better track tire life, the second highest operating expense on wheeled machines. It is a wireless, real-time system that visually indicates when tire pressure and tire chamber temperature fall outside prescribed limits. Operators can then take quick steps to prevent tire damage. The Tire Monitoring System is simple to install, easily programmable with an extended sensor battery life of approximately five years.
