Spring is coming….

There are many wonderful things that occur this time of year: snow melting, the appearance of crocuses, daffodils and tulips, spring sports, ordering your class ring and of course the prom. When someone asks me “how many children do you have?” I smile and say 1320 + 2. As a principal each and every student is of concern to me and with that comes the anxiety that every parent has around prom season. This should be a time of fun and excitement yet, we all worry that our children will be safe. Please spend some extra time with your young adults as they prepare to celebrate the joys of spring. Talk about the challenges of saying no to participating in drinking or doing drugs before or after the prom. Help them to understand that they not only risk their lives but the lives of others. Support them if they need to make that late night phone call asking you to pick them up. Most of all, hug them. Let them know they mean the world to all of us. Please have a safe and enjoyable spring. Sincerely, Mrs. O

THE PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARDS

CERTIFICATE OF EXCELLENCE In recognition of her exemplary work in community service, Megan Connor received a Certificate of Excellence by the judges in the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. She has been designated one of the top student volunteers in Massachusetts. Megan was among the top 10 percent of all applicants from Massachusetts in this year’s program. Her volunteer activities stood out as an impressive example of what young people can do to improve their communities.

PRESIDENT’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARD Based on the number of volunteer hours, Molly McGowan has qualified for the President’s Volunteer Service Award. This certificate is presented by the Corporation for National and Community Service in recognition and appreciation of Molly’s commitment to strengthening our nation and for making a difference through volunteer service. This award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country.

Each term students are nominated for our Student-of-the-Term Awards. Faculty/staff may choose students based on the following criteria: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Academic performance/improvement Character Maximizing potential Demonstrates responsibility in the classroom Involved in activities outside the classroom that help make KP a better and more positive environment.

Departments review each nomination, and one student for each department is chosen as a winner. The following are excerpts from their nominations. Congratulations to the following students on their selection for Term 3.

JULIE ANTONELLIS (Foreign Language Department) “Julie possesses a strong work ethic and the ambition to challenge herself to seek higher goals and achieve them. Her commitment to the French language and culture goes well beyond the classroom setting.” CAROLINE KELLEY (History & Social Sciences Department) “Caroline is an absolute pleasure to have in class. She is not only dedicated, hard working, and intelligent; she displays a sense of maturity that should be a model for any student to emulate. Her ability to pose thoughtful and intelligent questions speaks well of her intellectual curiosity and her future potential as a successful college student.”

SAMANTHA MAGNARELLI (Television Production) “Samantha has worked extremely hard this term and has made a tremendous contribution to the TV Program. As a student, she never takes the easy road. She is always up for a challenge. She comes to class with a smile and a willingness to learn each and every day without fail. She will never settle for second rate and always works hard to achieve perfection. She is very attentive to details and has very high standards and expectations for her work. She took on some very big tasks this term in preparation for this year’s National Student Television Emmy Contest. Samantha is kind, compassionate, and has so much to offer the world.”

ASHAY PATEL (English Language Arts Department) “Ashay is the quintessence of an intellect and a scholar. His ability to analyze elements of fiction and nonfiction belies his years and only his ability to use rhetoric in his writing rivals his aforementioned skills. What makes Ashay unique and commendable—besides his writing and critical thinking abilities—is the fact that he pursues knowledge for knowledge’s sake. Intellectualism matters to Ashay; all else is ancillary.” MEHRIN SALEEM (Mathematics Department) “Mehrin is an extremely talented math student. She combines her ability with diligence and a positive attitude to produce consistently excellent work.” ELIZABETH WHITE (Science Department) “Elizabeth exemplifies the merits and rewards of an excellent work ethic. As the year has progressed, Elizabeth has seen her grade rise to an A as a result of conscientious study habits that have developed to suit high school standards. She is a very highly motivated student.”

March 21, 2013 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE KING PHILIP REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL RECEIVES NATIONAL STUDENT COUNCIL AWARD RESTON, VA—For its exemplary record of leadership, service, and activities that serve to improve the school and community, King Philip Regional High School has been awarded a 2013 National Gold Council of Excellence Award by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC). Nearly 180 high school councils were named National Councils of Excellence. Of those, King Philip Regional High School is one of only 163 high school councils nationwide to receive the highly-esteemed honor of being named a National Gold Council of Excellence. To meet the requirements for the NASC National Councils of Excellence Award, a student council must demonstrate that it meets a variety of criteria. Those councils named to the Gold level have successfully met a greater number of the criterion. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings, a democratic election process, and membership in NASC, schools that qualify for the award demonstrate such things as leadership training for council members, teacher/staff appreciation activities, student recognition programs, school and community service projects, spirit activities, goal setting, financial planning, and active participation in their state and national student council associations. “Receiving an NASC National Gold Council of Excellence Award reflects the highest dedication on the part of the local school to providing a strong, well-rounded student council program,” says Jeff Sherrill, associate director of NASC. “NASC applauds the work of the National Gold Councils of Excellence and challenges them to continue their leadership and service to their schools and communities.” “Our council has worked tremendously hard in our school and community and we are honored and humbled by this recognition,” Elizabeth Coleman, KP Student Council Advisor. The National Association of Student Councils (NASC) promotes and provides leadership development opportunities to prepare and empower students to serve their schools and communities. NASC is a program of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). The NASSP—the preeminent organization and national voice for middle level and high school leaders—also sponsors the National Honor Society (NHS) and the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), which recognizes outstanding middle level and high school students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. For more information on NASC, visit www.nasc.us.

BIOLOGY STUDENTS VISIT MATHEMATICS & SCIENCE BUILDING On March 1, 2013, twenty-four sophomore biology students visited the new Mathematics and Science Building at Bridgewater State University. The Bartlett College of Science and Mathematics is the new state-of-the-art LEED certified facility that incorporates green construction with an airy, fresh feel. Our students visited the new home of CityLab, an outreach program designed to introduce students to science and biotechnology. Reinforcing the molecular genetics unit, students participated in “Lab Larceny”, a forensic lab using biotechnology techniques. Blood samples from a “crime scene” were analyzed to determine whether they belonged to the “victim” or two “suspects”. The DNA was amplified using PCR techniques. The DNA samples were cut with an enzyme and placed in a gel electrophoresis box for analysis. Students used their knowledge of DNA properties as well as skills with micropipettes and electrophoresis introduced in the classroom. Students were impressed with the new facility and thoroughly enjoyed completing a lab without the hurry of moving on to the next period. An added surprise was Angela Petruzziello, a former King Philip graduate, who is presently a junior at BSU. Angela was influenced by her experience at KP to go into biology, and she is presently working towards a teaching degree with a concentration in biology. Angela was an assistant in CityLab, as well as the Watershed Access Program, housed in the same area. The following students were accompanied by Mrs. Brennan and Miss Armstrong, a student teacher: Alex Allardi, Brian Berry, Sarah Burke, Lukas Cepkauskas, Sarah Clement, Kayleigh Connor, Lucy Curtis, Orvill De La Torre, Shannon Fox, John Harvey, Madison Hopkins, Ellie Lambalot, Erin Machado, Kyle Maloney, Amy Mason, Sydney Nasson, Bianca Porcaro, Clara Rabasco, Sarah Radford, Erich Ryan, Abby Seaberg, Jack Staal, Sarah Vitellaro, and Shannon Walsh.

CLASS ELECTIONS Tuesday, April 30, 2013 Block 1—Freshmen Block 2—Sophomores Block 3—Juniors

(submitted by Emily Harrington) With the coming of spring brings shining beginnings and blossoming possibilities, both literally for the rebirth of nature and figuratively for high school seniors. For my fellow classmates and me, our whole lives have been on the same path, attending the same schools, playing on the same sports teams, studying, learning and growing alongside one another. Slowly, we are jutting off in different directions and forging new paths, separating ourselves from those who have become a part of us. Some seniors, like myself, committed to a university or future plans almost four months ago, and so for us, the path before us has been cleared for quite some time now—the future in view. Many of these students are completely ready to embark on their independent journeys; on the other hand, some want to stay right here in the “tri-town” just a little bit longer. Other students are only just beginning to receive acceptance letters and are being presented with several paths to choose from, still unable to foresee their future. As we all begin to separate and create new roads at different times, this is only the beginning of our lives apart from each other. Just recently in school, I was studying the famous Robert Frost poem, “The Road Not Taken.” While analyzing it, I realized just how much I could relate to it. The poem is about making a decision and never regretting it or wishing one had made the alternate choice. With my college decision already set in stone for months now, I sometimes can’t help but wonder what if? What if I could’ve gotten in somewhere else? Would I have chosen to go there? However, after studying “The Road Not Taken,” I have realized that even stepping one foot on the road of regret is just not worth it. Instead, I will look down the path to Cornell University and smile, as I await for my time to leap boundlessly down it.

BLOOD DRIVE APRIL 10, 2013 Library 8:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. The King Philip Class of 2013 and the American Red Cross are hosting a spring blood drive on April 10th, from 8:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. in the library. For the last blood drive, 60 life-saving blood donations were collected. Let’s make this time even better! Sign-ups will be in the cafeteria and Room 317 the week leading up to the event. This event is for students and faculty only. Students age 16 can donate with a parental consent form. Students age 17 or older do not need parental consent, but all need photo ID and should eat a good breakfast before donating.

Junior Prom April 5th 6:30 P.M. to 10:30 P.M. Kirkbrae Country Club Lincoln, RI THEME “Masquerade Ball”

Representatives from Balfour Ring Company will be here on the following dates for students interested in ordering class rings: April 1 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Main Office Lobby April 2 & April 3 Cafeteria Lunch Block

Every Tuesday at 2:30 P.M. the student government meets in Mr. Fayle’s room (211). Although these meetings are for the officers only, if a student has something he/she would like addressed, then he/she should see one of the class officers so the item may be included on the agenda.
