To my father, Marc Peha, who passed away during the writing of this book. He was an enthusiastic storyteller always eager to find a new audience.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS Steve Peha Steve Peha is a leading voice on reading, writing, and education reform. As the founder of Teaching That Makes Sense, Inc. (TTMS), he has developed strategies that help teachers deliver more effective instruction and help kids improve their literacy skills.

file

TTMS provides education consulting, teacher training, and classroom modeling to school districts in the U.S. and Canada using the Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop method. In his materials, workshops, and books, Steve combines the best of classroom practice with a realworld, results-oriented perspective that makes teaching more practical for teachers and learning more meaningful kids.

Since founding TTMS in 1995, Steve has delivered hundreds of workshops for teachers, administrators, and parents. He has also addressed school boards, PTAs, and other organizations to discuss current challenges in education reform.

Sa

A trusted source for education journalists, he is widely quoted in the media discussing everything from teacher pay and high-stakes testing to the Achievement Gap and No Child Left Behind. His comments and opinion pieces have appeared in USA Today, The Christian Science Monitor, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Miami Herald, The Austin American-Statesman, and The Milwaukee JournalSentinel, as well as in School Reform News and District Administration magazines. In 2001, Steve was asked by The Seattle Times to write The Effective Learning Series, a bi-weekly column on best practice teaching that won the Innovators in Education Award from the Newspaper Association of America. Over the years, he has contributed more than 200 columns to this program, most recently an 18-part series on life skills for high school students. Steve holds a BA in English from Boston University. He lives in Charrboro, North Carolina, with his wife, Margot Carmichael Lester, and their dog, Ursa. For more information on Steve, visit the Teaching That Makes Sense website at www.ttms.org. .
